PHYSICAL EDUCATION AND SPORTS SCIENCE RAFFLE INSTITUTION Participants Information, Informed Consent and Adolescent Assent Study

Title: Effects of high or low glycaemic index (GI) foods on sprint interval performance Background: Glycaemic index (GI) foods of different levels have been said to affect the performance levels of athletes. Thus in the test we shall try to ascertain how much an effect (if any) the different types of GI food have on an athletes sprinting performance. This might help out athletes in the future to improve their performance level through eating the right type of GI food. Who is Participating: We are recruiting 10 teenagers aged 17-18 years to this study. Your child is being invited to participate in this study because they are in the age group cited. Below we provide information on the tests your child will go through and any risks or discomforts they may experience from the testing. This information is provided to help you make an informed decision on whether you would like your child to participate in this study. Please note that both you and your child must agree to participate. Your childs participation in this study and all its related tests is completely voluntary and your child is free to withdraw from this study at any time. We ask that you inform the investigators should your child decide to withdraw from the study. Your childs withdrawal from this study will have no effect on their relationship with us. If you have any questions on this study please contact the study Principal Investigator at the details given at the end of this form. Initial screening: We ask that you and your child fill out a health screening form. This form: i. Is to determine whether your child has any illness or condition which might prevent them from taking part in this study. ii. Provides us with some background information on your child e.g. date of birth, ethnicity. iii. Includes your child making a self-detemination of their pubertal status. iv. If your child is a girl includes some questions on her menstrual cycle.

Activity/tests your child will be required to complete during the experiment: Please note that the word you in this section has been substituted in reference to your child for ease. We ask that you help us with 4 training sessions. On each day subjects will be required to eat a pre-exercise meal. The pre-exercise meal will consist of: 1) low glycaemic index foods, 2) high glycaemic index foods or 3) no food given (control) One hour after finishing eating subjects will perform four 300 m sprints on a track with 5 minutes recovery between sprints. At the end of this time you will be free to go. During the pre-exercise snack consumed one hour before the trial, a bottle of mineral water will be given to each test subject. In between interval sprints, 100ml of water will be consumed There is a 5 minute rest period between each interval sprint is to ensure fatigue does not interfere with performance as much, and to allow for consumption of water.

Risks and discomforts: There are a number of risks involved with this type of exercise. Repeated sprint exercise can lead to the feeling of exhaustion, nausea and occasionally cause vomiting. As with any exercise test there is also an increased risk of mortality. However, the risk of death during or immediately after an exercise test is less than or equal to 0.01%, and the risk of a myocardial infarction during or after exercise testing is less than or equal to 0.04% (American College of Sports Medicine, 2005). Individuals with heart defects of any kind will not be able to take part in this study. To protect against risks whilst exercising subjects will be monitored continuously for exercise work rate and adverse signs and symptoms for termination of exercise tests. Subjects will not be left alone during any exercise testing. Subjects with asthma will not be able to participate in these tests. Confidentiality: All data collected from this study will only be accessible by the Principal Investigator and assigned research assistants. Data stored on personal computer will be password protected and not identified by name. Participants will not be identified in any reports, publications or presentations resulting from this research. Expected value of results: Findings of this study will help determine if glycaemic index (GI) foods will have an effect on sprint timing and sports performance in general. Further information: If you would like to discuss any details of this study further, please contact Joshua Suwe (hp 91371437) , Shawn Yong (hp 96501703) or Douglas Chee (hp 92369845) Principal Investigator of the study: Joshua Suwe, Shawn Yong and Douglas Chee.
