Cross Bonding to Adjacent Track Circuit

This double rail 50 Hz track circuit is designed for use in d.c. traction areas where both running rails are required for traction current return. Further information is contained in Railtrack Line Product Specication NR/PS/SIG/11757.
The track circuit uses a two element a.c. vane track relay. The two elements are termed local and control and are fed from the standard 110 V 50 Hz signalling supply. The local element is fed direct from the power supply whilst the control element is fed via the track through the following circuit components: A Feed End transformer, used to isolate the circuit, it has a 1:1 ratio plus input tappings to compensate for supply variations. A variable Feed End capacitor to adjust the input level to the track circuit.

A Surge Arrestor unit in the Feed End and Relay End, which breaks over at a predetermined voltage level - usually in the order of 600 V to 900 V and thereby safeguards the input and output from high voltage interference spikes. A Tractionrated fuse in both the Feed End and Relay End. Impedance bonds, one at the Feed End and one at the Relay End, used to provide a path for traction current around insulated block joints, and as a means of introducing and extracting alternating current into and out of the track circuit. A variable Relay End capacitor used to adjust the phase angle of the control winding relative to the local winding. Shunt Resistor, 20 ohms variable, connected across the control winding to improve the train shunt on short track circuits. Insulated block joint protection is obtained by connecting adjacent track circuits in anti-phase.

CHARACTERISTICS
Cross bonding can be achieved by tting intermediate impedance bonds as determined by the traction requirements. Up to two intermediate bonds may be tted in any one track circuit. The maximum length of track circuit is determined by the number of impedance bonds required by the traction engineer for cross bonding purposes. It is therefore only possible to quote typical limits of between 2000 m and 2700 m for a maximum of four bond tracks (i.e. with intermediate bonds) with ballast variation of 2 ohm/km to 3 ohm/km. Where intermediate bonds are not needed further distances can be operated. Typical operating values for a three bond track (i.e. with one intermediate bond) are shown below. The operating length of the track will be reduced by the inclusion of cable resistance in the leads between equipment and track, especially to the relay. The value decreases for longer tracks and those with intermediate bonds and should be limited to 2 ohms at the feed and 3 ohms in twisted cable at the relay. For an accurate assessment, the full track circuit parameters need to be quoted at the time of ordering and include the following:

SET-UP PROCEDURE
FEED END 1. Check fuses are the correct value and rating. 2. Check all links and terminals are secure. 3. Check the 110 V power supply is available and that the instantaneous polarities at the transformer primary are correct to the supply busbars. 4. Initially adjust the Feed End capacitor to 6.0 F. 5. Ensure that the B terminal of the capacitor and the E terminal of the surge arrestor are at low potential in relation to earth. 6. Ensure the phasing of the feed end bond auxiliary coil is correct. 7. Check for an a.c. voltage across the rails in the order of 3.5 V r.m.s. 7. Check the voltage on the control coil is 1.2 V to 1.5 V a.c. r.m.s. at a phase angle between 55 to 85 with control leading local and the relay is in full compression state. Note : If the relay has negative torque check phasing of connections shown on circuit diagram. 8. To achieve the gures above it may be necessary to adjust the Feed End and Relay End capacitors to suit local conditions (The Relay End capacitor setting should not exceed 10 F). Where intermediate bonds are tted, the bond capacitor can be adjusted, but must not exceed 9.3 F if the Relay End capacitor is set above 9 F. 9. When the gures have been achieved vary the Relay End capacitor by plus 1 F and minus 1 F ensuring the relay operates with equal force.

INTERMEDIATE BONDS Where intermediate bonds are tted, initially set the bond capacitor to 8.1 F.

RELAY END 1. Check fuses, connections and power supply as in Feed End. 2. Initially set Relay End capacitor to 8 F. 3. Ensure that the B terminal of the capacitor and the E terminal of the surge arrestor are at low potential in relation to earth. 4. Ensure the phasing of the feed end bond auxiliary coil is correct. 5. Set Relay Shunt resistor to maximum, 20 ohms. 6. Check local coil for 110 V a.c. r.m.s. and that the instantaneous polarity of the relay local coil is correct.

TRAIN SHUNT Connect a train shunt resistance box across the rails and reduce the value until the front contacts of the relay just break. A train shunt in excess of 0.3 ohms should be achieved. The variable Relay Shunt resistor can be adjusted to achieve a satisfactory train shunt. Check that the setting of the resistor has not affected the relay operation for track clear conditions.

BROKEN-DOWN BLOCK JOINT PROTECTION Check for correct anti-phasing of adjacent track circuits by shorting out an insulating block joint at the Relay End of the track circuit, checking that the relay is driven down when both track circuits are energised. Suitable phase angle measuring equipment is available on request.
