edu Classics 37C/History 37C: The Roman Legacy Spring Quarter, 2011 Course Description: ! This course offers a survey of Roman civilization from the crisis of the third century to the so-called fall of the Roman empire in 476. Special attention will be devoted to the issues of the continuity and changes in politics, society, literature, and art that characterize the later Roman Empire. Classics 37C is the nal part of the Roman Civilization series (37ABC); it satises the Humanistic Inquiry Breadth requirement. Required Texts: ! Cameron=Cameron, A. 1993. The Later Roman Empire. The Confessions of Augustine. Signet Classics Testing and Grading: ! 5 exams, each is worth 20% of grade ! All exams will be held in the regular lecture location and time, as indicated on the online schedule. Exams will be multiple choice, short IDs, map IDs and a short essay. They are not comprehensive: they will cover only the lectures and assigned readings since the previous exam. Lectures and Reading Assignments: ! Daily assigned readings are listed on the schedule below. THE SCHEDULE IS SUBJECT TO REVISION AT ANY TIME. Readings TBA will be announced in a timely fashion. It is advisable to do the assigned reading before the lecture in question since the lectures and readings are closely coordinated. Assigned readings will vary in length. Students are encouraged to get started on the readings from Ammianus and from Augustine well before the scheduled lectures. There will be no make-ups for exams and examinations, except in veriable emergency circumstances. Add/Drop Policy: !
