Current Web Presence Analysis Kelly Corbett Arizona State University TWC 301

Page 1

Summary: This analysis of my current web presence looks at where I would like to be in

the future, and what job I would like to hold when I graduate. I examine different job advertisements in the field I would like to be in as well as profiles of people who work in the job I would like to attain. This helps me to see what skills I need to posses in order to get a job as a marketing manager as well as other steps that could get me to this goal. I then examine my current web presence to see what criteria my digital identities either meet or do not meet. Finally putting this all together, I look at my strengths and weaknesses when it comes to my digital identities that I currently possess and how they can be changed to help me in the future.

The Future Professional Me: When I graduate from Arizona State I hope to

become a marketing manager with the Design Management degree I will have. I would like to go into the marketing field because I believe I am good at coming up with new clever ways to market different things, I keep up with new products and I enjoy studying people, which is very important to marketing and is why I am currently persuing a minor in sociology. A marketing manager is responsible for finding and developing customer bases for a companys products. Being a manager involves designing and implementing the companys marketing plan, with the help of assistants, development managers and the market research team. This career requires long hours, a lot of travel and several years of experience in the field. Those who are hiring for marketing managers look for the minimum education requirement which is a B.A. or B.S. in marketing, business management or other field that would be compatible with the company, volunteer work or an internship with a marketing company and finally experience in the field, such a lower level jobs as a marketing assistant or sale representative. The first job advertisement I found was for an entry level marketing advertising public relations job with Summit Advertising out of Denver, Colorado. They are looking for competitive individuals to fill positions for marketing, advertising and public relations for their expanding firm. They value highly motivated and proactive representatives because they only get paid based on results, so the clients really look to them to increase their bottom lines. They look for the qualities of outstanding communication skills, being able to prioritize and work independently but also the ability to work within a team. Looking at this first job advertisement gives me hope that there is a job out there for me with the degree I will have. Seeing that there is a job opening in a field I would want is very encouraging. I feel that I have the skills they are looking for and with their williness to train their employees this could be a very good opportunity. Due to not having a lot of experience in the marketing world, a entry level job like this would be perfect. The second job I examined was an advertising company out of Hartford, Connetticut, hiring for advertising/PR reps, Marketing consultants, training mangers and assistant mangers. The company says they pride themselves on their staff and our willing to provide the tools and guidance for entry level staff to become the best. They deal with powerhouse clients who have famous brand names. New candidates will be trained in financial planning and strategy, marketing & advertising concepts, territory management, public relations & social media, as well as many other areas. This seems like a fun and interesting job, in the field I would like. Some of the aspects they would be training a new candidate on seem intuitive while others seem like they could take a while to pick up on. It sounds like this company however is willing to work with new hires so that they would improve upon these skills if they did not possess them already. From what I am seeing from the first job advertisement and this one as well, is that these marketing companies look for highly-motivated people who are driven, because marketing can be a hard career and can take a lot out of you, so they look for people who would work hard even though challenges. The last job advertisement I looked at was that for HouText Marketing out of Bay City, Texas. They are looking for marketing, advertising and sales positions. This is an entry level position Page 4

with no experience required. The company wants talented and hardworking individuals who are looking to begin their careers with a fast-paced company. Candidates need outstanding communication skills, both verbal and written, be able to prioritize, supervise and work in a team, and finally they would like them to be detail-oriented and be able to multi-task. These three job advertisments seem to have a common theme, they dont require much experience, the companies are looking for people who are motivated, hard-working, can communicate well, prioritize and work in teams. These are skills that I feel I have gained throughout my time in school and at the job I currently hold. Its very encouraging to me to see that there are jobs open to me that dont require a lot of experience because I dont have much, and have been worrying about what jobs are ahead of me once I graduate. The first LinkedIn profile I looked at was that of Perry Woodworth who is currently a sales manager, marketing manager and managing director at Inventive Opportunity Group, Inc. in Canada. He lists education from Royal Roads University, Humber College and McMaster University. He has over 500+ connections, a blog, and Google+. As a sales and marketing manager, he lists knowledge in social media, social business and networking, the capacity to utilize online skills as a strong business tool, business development, research, and sale and marketing management as important skills to possess. The next profile is that of Nathan Kievman, who is the CEO at DemingHill. His education is from Ohio University, Principia College and Rancho Cotate and has many connections and websites and profiles in which you can further examine his career. He has two masters degrees in business and sports administration and lists social media marketing, social marketing, and event marketing as specialities. His LinkedIn profile is a little different because he focuses on social media marketing. I also like that he recieved a degree in not only business but sports administration, that tells me that even if I graduate with a degree that isnt necessarily in business I could pursue a job in marketing in some aspect. Finally, I looked at Greg Accetturos profile who is a marketing director at Natus Medical. He recieved his degree from City University of Seattle, has worked as a director of sales and marketing for different companies as well as a senior marketing manager. He has many connections through LinkedIn and lists his specialities as cross functional team leadership, product/project management, and marketing and sales managment. Looking at these three very diverse profiles tells me that in order to get a marketing job it is important to have first and education and secondly good networking skills, all of the profiles I looked at had many connections along with various sites that were linked to their profile that told you more about them. The soft skills that are valued in this position are closely related to the criteria I would use to evaluate people within this particular position. These skills and criteria would be, communication both verbal and written, how well a person can communicate is very important to this kind of work. Being able to prioritize different tasks, and supervising others because it would be a management position. The ability to work in a team is very important, because not only are you working as a supervisor over others but you would have to work together with your entire staff to come up with different ideas. The last skill that is essential to have is the ability to multi-task because there will be a lot going on in a job like this and you must be able to juggle it all. Page 5

The Current Me: Searching google, the LinkedIn profile that I created was the only

identity that showed up for me, all of the other links were for others that had my same name. The other two search engines didnt result in any of my identities. The identities that I do have that didnt show up include FaceBook, Diigo, MindMeister, LinkedIn, and WordPress. Communication: In a marketing job communication is essential. I feel I have learned communication skills through school and my current job. Looking at my various digital identities, I would say WordPress shows my communication skills, I believe it shows that I am a good writer and can write well when given a certain subject to write about. As far as verbal communication skills, my identities do not show this, the only way they really could is with a video. Prioritizing: My different digital identities do not really show how I can prioritize different tasks which is important to the job I want. The identity that would show this would be MindMeister. If I wanted to make some changes in order for my digital identities to show more of how I can prioritize I could make a mindmap that would show different tasks and how I would get them done in a timely manner. These different tasks would be described and a due date listed, this would show a potential employer how I can handle many different things at once and create and organized system to work through these things. Supervising: Looking through my different identities none of them really show how I use the skill of supervising. I could change this with revision to my LinkedIn profile. This profile lists my current job as a server at a restaurant, but I also manage there on some nights. Changing my profile to reflect this would show a potential employer that I have supervising skills. Teamwork: You can tell that I have used teamwork through my WordPress blog and Project #2 that is linked to my WordPress blog. If an employer were to see this project and know that is was put together by many different people, me being one of them, they would know I can be a useful member of a team. As far as my other identities showing my use of teamwork, they dont show that much, I would like to change that because I think it reflects highly on me, if it is seen that I can work well with others. Muli-tasking: While it is not explicitly seen in our WordPress blogs that we multi-task, for our assignments in this class it is a must. We are always going back and forth between the different websites like Diigo, and MindMeister to complete deadlines. I am not sure how you could show multi-tasking within the digital identities but it is something I could work on to ensure that an employer knew I posses this skill.

Conclusion: The two strengths depicted by my digital selves are my creativeness and my

writing ability. While we havent had that much creative freedom with our WordPress blogs or MindMaps because of what the site allows I have still enjoyed changing certain things about my digital identity so it reflects me more. Being that I am a Design major, aesthetics are huge to me, and I feel that my digital identities reflect this. Colors, layout, font, the pictures included are all really important to me and I feel I have done a good job of creating, as much as a I can, aethetically pleasing identities. My next strength is my writing ability. I feel that the posts I have done on WordPress address the prompt well and are gramatically correct. While writing is not my favorite activity, I think it is something that is important to employers and can be seen in my digital identities. The two weaknesses depicted by my digital selves would first be my lack of experience. If I had more experience I believe I would have more digital selves. If I had more job experience I would maybe have a website, a more complete LinkedIn profile, as well as many other digital selves. Nowadays, employers look online for their employees and examine what can be seen about them. Having a WordPress blog is helpful I believe because once I get a job the blog could change to reflect on my work. So as far as weaknesses go, I wish I would have more a a digital presence. My next weakness goes along with the first but I do not have anything in my current digital selves that state my future goals and what I would like to do in the future. If I want to become a marketing manager I should make that loud and clear! I feel that as the time is coming that I will be graduating I need to make a grown up digital identity, that would state what I want to become, and how I am going to do it. Maybe this would include resumes, a MindMap of goals and anything else that would encourage me to reach my goals.
