Project excerpted from Vogue Knitting: Mittens & Gloves. Use stranded colorwork to achieve the picturesque motifs central to Elli Stubenrauch's wintry mittens. They're perfect for your next snowball fight. KNITTED MEASUREMENTS (Click here for design charts.) Hand circumference 8 1/4"/21cm Length from wrist to tip 9 3/4"/24.5cm SIZE Sized for adult woman. MATERIALS 1 1 3/4oz/50g hank (approx 185yd/169m) each of Louet North America Gems Fingering (superwash wool) in #54 teal (A) and #36 linen grey (B) Set of 5 size 1 (2.25mm) doublepointed needles (dpns) OR SIZE TO OBTAIN GAUGE Stitch marker and scrap yarn GAUGE 37 sts and 43 rnds = 4"/10cm over chart pat using size 1 (2.25mm) needles. TAKE TIME TO CHECK GAUGE. STITCH GLOSSARY Kfb K into front and back of st 1 st inc d. M1R Insert LH needle from back to front under the strand between last st worked and next st on LH needle. K into front loop to twist the st. M1L Insert LH needle from front to back under the strand between last st worked and next st on LH needle. K into back loop to twist the st. CORRUGATED RIB (over a multiple of 3 sts) Rnd 1 *With A, k1, bring B to front of work and p2, bring B to back; rep from * around. Rep rnd 1 for corrugated rib. LEFT MITTEN Cuff With A, cast on 63 sts, divided over 4 dpns. Place marker (pm) and join, taking care not to twist sts. Work in corrugated rib for 13/4"/4.5cm. Thumb gusset Rnd 4 With A, M1R, k1, M1L, work to end of rnd 78 sts. Cont to foll chart in this

manner, working incs as shown, through chart rnd 32 106 sts. Rnd 33 Work across first 30 sts for thumb, then place these sts on scrap yarn, work to end of rnd 76 sts. Cont to work to top of chart, working decs at top of

mitten as shown 28 sts. With A, join 14 sts each side, using 3-needle bind-off (click here for instructions) . Thumb Divide 30 sts on scrap yarn evenly over 3 dpns. Pm and join. Beg chart 2 Work rnds 1 10 of chart 2, working decs and incs as shown on chart 30 sts. Top shaping Next (dec) rndWith A, [k2tog] 15 times 15 sts. Next (dec) rndWith A, k1, [k2tog] 7 times 8 sts. Cut A, leaving a 6"/15cm tail. Thread through rem sts and cinch tightly to close. RIGHT MITTEN Work as for left mitten, foll charts 3 and 4. FINISHING Sew gap between thumb and hand closed.
