PL ISSN 0081 3834 VITA-POSHTOVA 2 - NEW THE EASTERNMOST SITE OF THE LINEAR BAND POTTERY CULTURE INTRODUCTION The area of Linear Band Pottery culture (abbreviated LBPC) includes the territory of Central and Eastern Europe, from the Seine River in the west up to the Horyn and Dnister Rivers in the east (Fig. lA). For long, the Fasova site (Volodarsk-Volynski district, Zhyto- myr region) that was found of V. Piasetskiy in 1972 in the Irsha River basin, was being considered as the most northeastern locality of this culture (Telegin 1979, 232-233; Kozlowski 1985,65-66). The Maynova Balka settlement (Anan'yiv district, Odessa region), discovered by S. Dvorianinov in 1976 in the area between the South Bug and Dnister River, was being considered as the most southeastern localityofLBPC (Dvorianinov 1982; Larina et ai. 1999). But recently, fragments of Linear Band pottery were found even more to the east - in the Vita-Poshtova 2 site close to Kyiv (Fig. 1B). LOCATION OF THE SITE The Vita-Poshtova 2 site is situated 1.5 km to the southeast from limits of the Vita- Poshtova village, Kyiv-Svyatoshin district, Kyiv region, and 8.5 km to the southwest from outskirts of Kyiv. It covers a small sloping area on the left bank of the spring of the no- name brook - a right-side tributary ofthe Vita River (Fig. 2). The Vita River is a right-side tributary of the Dnipro River. The distance between the site and the Dnipro valley is 10 km. The region of the site constitutes the north border offorest-steppe zone. The Predniprovs'ka Upland, formed by loess, extends to south from source of the Vita River. To the north from it the Kyiv-Zhytomyr Polissia region belongs to a wide lowland zone, extending up to the Baltic Sea. 206 Dmytro Gaskevych A. B . -11 o 60km ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ Fig. 1. After resolving the garrison the ground was given for building summer cottages. A research team of the De- partment of the Protection of Archaeological Sites of the Kyiv Regional Department of Cultural Heritage, under the direction of P. Pokas, has executed the investigation of this area before the beginning of the construction in summer of 1995. They found a few pot- sherds of LBPC, Trzcinjec culture and the Medieval Period. Some parts of the site were sufficiently damaged. Materials were found on a surface in the area of 1.5 hectares, among remains of buildings, asphalt paths, pits, etc. Twenty two sounding trenches, 2.5 to 3.0 sq. meters each, were distributed on the area where excavation was possible. Three layers were observed there. The top layer is brown humus 0.2-0-4 m thick. The layer of light- grey loamy sand a 0.2-0.5 meters thick was below. The layer of reddish-brown ortsand occurs at the depth of 0.6-0.8 meters. No archaeological features were located. Only two 208 Dm)'trO Gaskevych soundings yielded potsherds (6 altogether) of different age. They were found in layers of humus and loamy sand. Probably the cultural layer of site was destructed at a time prior to the excavation. After the research the building works had been enabled. During 1996 and 1997 I was supervising the construction and recovered from the place more artifacts. Altogether 11 flints and 82 pottery fragments were found in the Vita-Poshtova 2 settlement. LITHIC ASSEMBLAGE The lithic implements are made of good quality rock, the so-called "Volhynian" smoked- transparent grey and brown flint from Cretaceous sediments of the Volhyno-Podolian Up- land. The lithic assemblage is represented by one endscraper on the blade (Fig. 3: 1), 1 in- tact blade (Fig. 3: 4), 2 blade fragments (Fig. 3: 2, 3), and 7 flakes. The proximal part of one thin blade has steep-retouch on the truncated side, and dorsal flat-retouch on the lateral part (Fig. 3: 2). Lateral parts of one blade and 5 flakes have irregular retouch (Fig. 3: 4-9). Probably very regular thin blades with parallel ridges found on the site were produced by application of the pressure technique. Therefore such forms, as well as retouched tools made from them (Fig. 3: 1-3) should be connected with the Neolithic pottery. Towards the time of the Trzciniec culture the blade technique degrades. The flakes found in the site can be dated to both the Neolithic Period and the Bronze Age. CERAMICS The majority of ceramic finds of the site dates back to the Neolithic Period. Only 3 pot- sherds without ornament are Medieval. One decorated fragment of a top of the vessel of Trzciniec culture is present. Other potsherds are of the Neolithic age or their chronology is not defined. According to technological features they can be subdivided on 4 groups. The first group consists of 28 single-layer grey and grey-brown wall fragments of ves- sels. They are made from clay with a small admixture of fine-grained sand and remains of vegetation. The thickness of them is 0.3-1.5 cm. Both surfaces are smooth. The narrow superficial incised lines are on 5 potsherds of this group (Fig. 3: 10-14). On two potsherds there are crossing, with pits marking the intersection points (Fig. 3: 13, 14). The second group consists of 13 wall fragments of vessels. Their main feature is an admixture of a calcareous crumbs and granite gruss in clay. Most of fragments have three layers. The external surfaces are grey-brown, the internal surfaces are dark-grey, and layer between them is red-brown. Four potsherds are single-layer. They are black and dark grey. One single-layer potsherd is red. The thickness of potsherds is between 0.7 and 1.0 cm. The gruss is large and small-grained, customary, and burnt. Moreover, fine-grained sand was added in the clay. One potsherd is decorated by 2 fingernail impressions (Fig. 4: 1). Three potsherds are decorated by large quantity of incised diagonal lines 1-1.5 cm long (Fig. 4: 2, 3). Fragmenty ceramiki 212 Dmytro Gaskevych The third group consists of 17 wall fragments, 1 fragment of the top of a vessel (Fig. 4: 4), and 1 fragment of a bottom of a large vessel (Fig. 5: 2). The structure of their clay is similar to one of second group potsherds, but does not contain calcareous crumbs. The fragments have two- or three-layers. The external surfaces of them are pink, dark-brown or grey, the internal surfaces are grey, and layer between them is dark-brown or black. The thickness of vessel walls varies from 0.6 to 1.5 cm. The thickness of the bottom is 2.2 cm. The admixture the fine-grained sand, chamotte, and gruss of a different size. The fragment of the vessel top is straight, with finger impression beneath the rim (Fig. 4: 4). One fragment of a wall is decorated by the fingernail impression (Fig. 4: 5). The fourth group consists of 16 fragments of walls and 2 fragments of a bottom of a vessel (Fig. 5: 1). They are composed of two layers. The outside surface is brown, internal surface is grey. The clay has a minor admixture of fine-grained sand and - occasionally - chamotte. Debris with ornament is lacking. Thickness of vessel walls is OA-1.2 cm. Thickness of the bottom is 1.7 cm. An enrob covers surfaces of some potsherds of the second, third, and fourth group. It has survived in a very bad shape. Surfaces of the remaining pottery fragments are rough. Probably, potsherds lied for a long time exposed on a ground. Intensive erosion of edges of all potsherds confirms this conclusion. Prints of burnt grains of cereals are on potsherds of the first, second and fourth group. The presence of single inclusions of charred plant re- mains have been confifllled on 2 potsherds of the second group and on 3 potsherds of the third group. Potsherds of the first group show characteristics typical for so-called "fine" pottery of the "music note" phase of LBPC. It should be noticed that settlement of the "music note" phase continued in the eastern area of LBPC longer than in the western area, including the time of the Zeliezovce phase (Kozlowski 1985, 69; Kadrow, Zakoscielna 2000, 190-192). The pottery of the second group represents "kitchen" vessels of LBPC. The pottery of the third and fourth group cannot be chronologically assigned due to lack of characteristic features. These groups can include potsherds of the Neolithic Period, as well as from the Bronze Age. IMPORTED FINDS OR THE SETTLEMENT OF LBPC? The Neolithic materials of the Vita-Poshtova 2 site are the most eastern finds of LBPC. But this locality is placed in the area of the Dnipro-Donets culture (below - DDC). The question arises: are fragments of the Linear Band Pottery discovered here the imports or rather remains of the LBPC settlement? The second hypothesis may be supported by three arguments: 1) The Vita-Poshtova 2 site is situated alongside to the small stream, in a long distance and a high position in relation to the river. But all DDC sites are located on sandy hills in rivers valleys, or on the borders oflow sandy terraces of a bigger rivers and lakes. Vita-Poshtova 2 - New the Easternmost Site of the Linear Band Pottery Culture 213 2) The finds of LBPC occur there without any other Neolithic cultural context. 3) All flint implements of the Vita-Poshtova 2 site are made of the imported good quality raw material. Deposits of these flints are on the territory of Western Ukraine. Artifacts made of this type of flint are not numerous on DDC sites in the Kyiv region, where majority of lithic finds is of the local low-quality, non-transparent, large-granular boulder flint of yellow, grey, or red colour. Thus the Vita-Poshtova 2 site can be considered as the most eastern known LBPC set- tlement. THE PROBLEM OF CONTACTS BETWEEN PEOPLE OF LBPC AND PEOPLE OF NEIGHBORING CULTURES ON THE TERRITORY OF UKRAINE Unfortunately, the finds from the Vita-Poshtova 2 site are not numerous. Nevertheless, this site is very important. It allows us to assert a far-reaching expansion of groups of LBPC from the Volhynian region to the Dnipro River the east. This zone is very distant from the core area of LBPC. Therefore the problem of contacts between its population and commu- nities of adjoining cultures arises. On the territory of Ukraine we have a Bug-Dnister culture (abbreviated BDC) in south, the Prip'iat-Neman culture (by M. Charniauski) in the north and DDC in the east. Evidences of a relationship between groups of LBPC and BDC are well known. The most significant of them are imports of the BDC pottery found in LBPC settlements Maynova Balka and Gura Camencii VI (Larina 1999,103,104; Larina et al. 1999,19,20), as well as the Linear Band pottery found in BDC sites Bazkov Ostrov (Danilenko 1969, 66,156), Soroca V (Markievich 1974, 116), and Tatarauca Noua XV (Larina et al. 1999, 19; Wechler 2001, 273). Not long time ago 1. Zali-znyak and M. Tovkaylo found LBPC pot- sherds on the multi-cultural unstratified site Dobrianka 3, which is situated on the Tikych River (Talne district, Cherkasy region). According to M. Tovkaylo these finds are connected with the pottery of the late (Savran) phase of BDC, found there too (personal information of M. Tovkaylo). In opinion of J. K. Kozlowski and O. Larina some features of flint implements in LBPC settlements of Dnister river basin indicate influences of BDC or assimilation of elements of local Mesolithic communities (Kozlowski 1985, 68; Larina 1999,50). According to J. K. Kozlowski, one potsherd with "music note" decoration discovered in the Kotovane settlement of LBPC, close to Drogobych (the Upper Dnister zone) is a frag- ment of the pointed base vessel, the shape of which had been taken from the tradition of the Neolithic Bug-Dnister culture (Kozlowski 1985, 68, 69. Fig. 11: 2). In my opinion, it is a fragment of the bottom of the pouch-shape vessel (Germ. Taschengefiij3). Another pouch- shape vessel with the triangular bottom and vertical perforation in the corners is known from the Girka Polonka settlement in the Volhynian region (Piasetskiy, Okhrimenko 1990, 21 .. 76, Fig. 5: 25). The origin of vessels of this type in the Neolithic cultures of the Danubian- Balkan-Anatolian circle is probably related rather to a ritual function (e.g. Pyzel2oo1, 105, 106) then to contacts with Neolithic communities of adjacent territories. Any well-founded evidences of contacts between western colonists of LBPC and native population of DDC and PNC are absent. There are no ceramics imports of LBPC in materials from sites of DDC and Prip'iat-Neman culture (abbreviated PNC). At first sight the men- tioned presence of few implements made of the "Volhynian" flint in the DDC settlements can show such relationships. In Poland analyses of lithic raw materials from several sites of LBPC and Late-Mesolithic J anislawice culture gave the basis for the concept of exchange good-quality materials (the "chocolate" flint, obsidian) between their populations (Kozlowski, Kozlowski 1977, 263). But we have here a more complicated situation. Sites of the Janislawice culture and PNC in the Volhynian Polissia prevail and in the Kyiv-Zhytomyr Polissia they are widespread on DDC locations (Gaskevych 2001, 62-66). Therefore, im- plements made of the "Volhynian" flint on DDC sites can be explained by a relationship with populations of these cultures, but not only with LBPC communities. Evidences of contacts between the native hunter-gatherers and western farmers are lacking in materials of the LBPC settlements ofthe north of Ukraine too. There are no pot- tery imports from the area of DDC and PNC featuring elements of LBPC and neighbouring Neolithic cultures. Thus, at present it is only possible to assert interrelation between the population LBPC and BDC. Why there are not evidences of contacts with both PNC and DDC? Several expla- nations of it are possible. Lands suitable for agriculture were attractive first of all for the farmers of LBPC. Such grounds are on loess plains of the forest-steppe zone of Ukraine. It is the area of BDC. The origin of this culture is connected with expansion of the population of the early Neolithic Cri!? culture. Therefore when the groups of LBPC have moved to the territory of Ukraine, the development level of inhabitants of the Bug-Dnister area could be higher than that of communities from the Polissia and the Dnipro river valley, inhabiting unfertile sand soils. The larger difference of development complicated contacts between the farmers of LBPC and hunter-gatherers of PNC and DDC. Probably these contacts, if existed, were less inten- sive than contacts with the Bug-Dnisterian population. It is not inconceivable that the state of research may playa certain role. Sites of BDC are studied better than Neolithic sites of the forest zone of Ukraine. Generally, it is con- nected with poor preservation of settlements which are located on sandy grounds. Most likely the influence of both above-mentioned factors are present. More precise answer can be brought with further examination of this question.
