Steel description Short name X2CrNiMON22-5-3 Material no. 1.4462

Stainless austenitic steel TK 1.4462

Scope
This data sheet applies for hot- and cold-rolled sheet and strip, semi-finished products, bars, wire rod and profiles, as well as for seamless and welded tubes/pipes for pressurized applications.

Application
TK 1.4462 has a ferritic-austenitic microstructure in which both microstructure components are present in approximately equal amounts. It combines the higher strength of ferritic chromium steels with the corrosion resistance of austenitic CrNi steels. Due to its favorable mechanical properties, together with high resistance to corrosion, this material has many applications in the chemical and petrochemical industry, such as in seawater desalination plants and offshore technology. Due to its low C content, resistance to intergranular corrosion is also assured in the welded condition.

Temperatures for solution annealing must be agreed for specimens to be subjected to simulated heat treatment. It the heat treatment is performed in a continuous furnace, the upper end of the given temperature range or even above it is generally preferred.

Processing/welding
Pre-heating to at least 100 C is recommended for thicknesses approx. > 10 mm; the temperature may have to be increased for flexurally stiff components. The pre-heating/interpass temperature (working temperature) may not exceed 200 C. TK 1.4462 can be welded with greater heat input than austenitic steels. 8 25 KJ/cm are recommended, trending more toward the higher values. Accelerated cooling using compressed air or water is not permitted as this is likely to result in a ferrite content of up to 90%.

The root and first intermediate passes in double-V welds for this type of sheet or K-welds on stiff components should be welded using a higher-alloy austenitic electrode. All measures which counter distortion (e.g. back-step welding, switching sides when welding double-V welds, use of two welders for larger components) must be taken into particular account when welding TK 1.4462. For product thicknesses over 12 mm, a double-V weld should be used rather than a Vweld. The included angle should be 60 70, although approx. 50 is sufficient for MIG welding. Excessive welds should be avoided. Tack welds should be made relatively close together (significantly closer than for unalloyed steels) to prevent severe deformation, shrinkage or weld detachment. The tack welds should subsequently be ground or at least the crater cracks eliminated. Heat treatment after welding is not necessary. Processes without filler materials are not permitted due to the corresponding tendency to ferritic solidification. The most reliable method of obtaining a good ferrite/austenite balance is to subsequently heat treat the material. Short dwell times of approx. 5 min. at temperatures around 1,040C are sufficient for this. Subsequent cooling should not be too quick as this results in an excessively high ferrite content (see also par. 2). Only rust-resistant equipment such as steel brushes, chipping hammers, etc. may be used in processing to ensure that the passivation is not compromised. Please refrain from marking the weld area with marker pens containing oils or temperature indicating chalk. The high corrosion resistance of this stainless steel is provided by the formation of a homogeneous, dense passivation layer on the surface. Heat tints, scale, slag residues, tramp iron, weld spatter and similar must be removed so they do not damage the passivation layer. The dual-phase microstructure increases resistance to stress crack corrosion compared with austenitic CrNi steels. Brushing, grinding, pickling or sand blasting (iron-free quartz sand or glass beads) processes can be used to clean the surface. Only stainless steel brushes may be used for brushing. Immersion and spray pickling processes should be used when pickling previously brushed weld areas, although pickling pastes or solutions are often used. After pickling, the surface should be carefully cleaned with water.

TK 1.4462 is also well-suited for laser beam fusion cutting. The cut edges have only very small heataffected zones and are generally free of micro-cracks, which means they are readily formable. Provided the process is properly controlled, the fusion cut edges on TK 1.4462 are suitable for immediate further processing and in particular can be welded without any further preparation.

Remarks
The material is magnetizable.
