After some anxiety, Im now confident
that Ive firmly established a weed called
corn salad in my garden.
Not that it should have been difficult:
The plant is, after all, a weed, one that got
its name for the way it invades European
corn fields where corn means any
grain except our corn, which is called
maize there.
The second part of this weeds name,
salad, explains why I want it in my
garden. Corn salad, also called mche,
lambs lettuce or fetticus, is a tasty salad
green that forms rosettes of small, dark
green, spoon-shaped leaves. These leaves
are not crisp, like lettuce, but so tender as
to almost melt in your mouth. Their
delicate flavor is flowery, something like
rose petals.
Despite its apparent delicacy, corn
salad is a tough plant. It self-seeds readily
and tolerates enough cold to grow happily
through cool autumn weather, then
survives winter even in northern regions.
Nonetheless, in the past I frequently
had trouble growing corn salad. Despite
careful sowing of fresh seeds, germina-
tion would be slow and spotty.
Then I decided a few years ago to try
growing corn salad by capitalizing on its
weedy nature. I became deliberately less
careful about pulling up all corn salad
plants going to seed. The result? More
corn salad seedlings.
Corn salad seedlings coming up first in
shaded areas whether from seed sown
by me or self-sown eventually clued
me in on the reason for the poor results of
my deliberate sowings: The seeds only
germinate at cool temperatures.
So now, if I want to deliberately plant
corn salad somewhere, I wait until late
summer or early fall to plant. Or I sow in
a seed flat that I keep on the cool, north
side of my house until sprouts appear,
then transplant the seedlings out to the
garden. Or I cover sown seed with a
board to keep the soil below cool and
moist. Or easiest of all I just dig up
and move clumps of self-sown seedlings
to wherever I want the plant to establish
itself. Corn salad transplants easily.
Of course, self-sown seedlings do not
come up in neat, gardenesque rows; they
show up in amorphous patches here and
there near where plants previously stood.
Plants also come up thickly, as well as in
places where they are not wanted. Paths,
for example.
Fortunately, corn salad is easy to weed
out where it is not wanted. And as for
coming up too thickly, plants can be
thinned out to let those that remain grow
larger. Or a scissors can be used to
mow crowded clumps of plants for
harvest.
Autumn and winter are the best times
for growing corn salad. Just a bit of extra
protection a covering of clear plastic
or the warm, south wall of a house, for

among the more popular
options, but some shoppers
shy away from leather
because of preconceived
notions about the material.
Despite what many people
think about leather, most of
the common beliefs are
actually myths, and leather is
easier to care for than many
consumers might think.
MYTH: Leather is for
bachelors.
While the black leather
sofa has been a staple in
bachelor pads for years, a
leather couch or loveseat is
just as fashionable in a family
residence as it is in a man
cave. There are an array of
colors and styles of leather
furniture available today,
proving the perception that
leather is just for single men
wrong.
MYTH: Leather is hard to
clean.
Leather is a natural
material made from the hide
of different animals. In
general, all a person needs to
clean stains and spills is a
damp rag. Leather furniture
should be routinely dusted.
Conditioning products can be
applied once or twice a year
to keep the leather supple.
MYTH: Leather furniture is
too expensive.
The up-front cost of leather
furniture may be more than
other options. However, while
many other fabrics wear out
over time, leather only gets
better and better. Leather will
develop its character and
patina through frequent use.
For consumers looking for
furniture that will remain
durable and attractive, leather
can be well worth the initial
investment.
MYTH: Leather furniture
isnt comfortable.
Leather furniture indoors is
not like sitting on leather seats
in a car that is subject to the
temperature fluctuations from
outdoors. Inside with
moderated temperatures, the
leather will stay pleasantly
cool in the summer and will
warm to your body heat in the
winter. Try to keep leather
furniture away from windows
and the sun, which will heat it
up and may fade the color
prematurely.
MYTH: Leather isnt for
children or pets.
Children and pets can be
hard on furniture, but leather
can often withstand their
abuse. Unless a dog is using
the sofa as his new chew toy,
chances are the furniture can
withstand a reclining pet or a
boisterous child. There are
special leather sealants that
can provide an added measure
of protection in high-traffic
homes.
MYTH: Leather doesnt
require any maintenance.
Although leather is pretty
durable and care-free,
cushions should be turned and
fluffed once a week to
maintain shape. Light dusting
or vacuuming can be done. Be
sure to wipe up any spill
promptly.

Garden mums are referred to as
hardy but sometimes dont over-winter
well in our Indiana hardiness Zone 5
weather. Our hardiness zone has an
average minimum
low temperature
range of -10 to -15
degrees Fahrenheit.
Chrysanthemums
are shallow-rooted
plants and when
planted in the fall
dont have much time
to develop a good
root system.
Repeated freezing
and thawing of the
soil during the winter
months can heave
plants out of the
ground and cause severe damage or even
kill the roots.
Damage is most severe in poorly
drained soils. Garden mums planted in
the spring can survive the winter much
better than those planted in the fall.
They have developed a much better root
system which gives them chance to
grow and establish themselves for
several months.
You can improve the odds of your
mums surviving the winter by applying
mulch typically in late November or
early December after the plants have
gone dormant. Mums that have been
planted in a sunny, well drained location
with good air circulation have the best
environment for optimum growth and
resistance to disease.
Mulch insulated roots reduces
temperature swings on the roots that can
damage them.
Sometimes even the best of care will
not insure survival. If we get a winter
with not much snow and fluctuating
temperatures, some plants may still be
lost. But mulching will greatley increase
their chances of surviving.
Place 3 or so inches of mulch around
the mums. Do not cut back the plants
tops until spring. Cutting mums back in
the fall is a common practice; recent
research found that unpruned plants
survived the winter better than those
pruned in the fall. The stems will help
trap snow giving added winter protec-
tion by insulating the crown.
You can use clean weed-free straw,
pine needles and evergreen branches for
mulch. Leaves are not a particularly
good mulch as they tend to mat down
and dont provide adequate protection.
When springtime comes, keep
checking and when you see little green
shoots starting to come up, trim off all
the dead stuff. Mums are very suscep-
tible to rot and if you leave all that stuff
on the mums, it will suffocate that new
growth.

NEWYORK (AP) A thorough
housecleaning can take all day maybe
all weekend. And as satisfying as that can
be, sometimes you just dont have the
time or the motivation.
But with the holidays just around the
corner, we all want our homes to look
good for parties, drop-in visitors and
relatives. We want our guests to have that
Wow, this place looks nice! feeling that
comes with entering a house where the
beds are made, sofa pillows are plumped,
clutter is gone, and sinks and stovetop are
shiny.
Fortunately, most visitors dont check
the broiler for grime or under the
radiators for dust. But what should the
game plan be when you want to make
your home look presentable without
going for a deep clean?
Heres some advice on cleaning high-
profile spaces in a hurry for maximum
visual and psychological impact.
PRIORITIZE: Concentrate on the
public areas: the living/family room,
dining room and bathrooms. Prioritize
what has to be done replenishing toilet
paper in the bathroom versus what
would be nice to do dusting the
picture frames, said Deanne Marie,
creator of Smart Solutions for Busy
People books and blog. Marie suggests
taking a timer with you from room to
room (use the one on your cell phone if
you dont have a kitchen timer) and
setting it for 15 minutes in each room as
a way of forcing yourself to focus on
the necessities.
Even if youve only got one hour,
youll be amazed at how much you can
get done in four rooms using that
technique.
HIDE CLUTTER: Marie calls it the Hail
Mary pass of housecleaning: Cover up
the mess when you cant get rid of it!
The Maids, a national cleaning
franchise, advises simply piling your
miscellaneous countertop clutter in a
laundry basket and sticking it in the
closet. No time to do the dishes before
company arrives? The Maids solution is
to stack them on a cookie sheet for
temporary storage in the oven (cold, of
course).
Another tip: Shut the doors to rooms
and closets your guests need not see.
LOOK AROUND: Cheryl Najafi of
CherylStyle.com, a home entertaining
expert, recommends trying to see your
house the way your guests will, to make
sure you havent overlooked anything.
Take the sit test, Najafi says: If
youre hosting a party in the formal
living room, make sure you sit down and
survey the room. Youll see things from a
different vantage point. Like those dust
bunnies in the corner!
She also advises taking a look as you
walk in the door. What will your guests
see as they stand there waiting for the
door to open? Broken umbrella? Garden
clogs? Spider webs? Junk mail? Deal
with it.
Think about the big picture. What
large pieces of furniture will people
notice as they enter a room? Plumping
sofa pillows and making beds will have a
bigger impact on your homes appear-
ance than wiping down the refrigerator
shelves.
BATHROOM: If theres one room where
bad housekeeping can really gross your
guests out, its the bathroom. Fortunately,
the must-dos are relatively easy to
accomplish, and may even be best left to
last-minute so nobody in your family can
make a mess before guests arrive.
Giving the toilet bowl a scrub with a
brush, as unpleasant as it is, must be tops
on your list. Youre also going to have to
wipe down the seat and rim. (Disposable
Clorox wipes are great for this purpose.)
And while you can always shut the
shower door or curtains to hide tub scum,
there really is something nice about a
gleaming sink and countertop.
Fortunately toothpaste and soap residue
are easily sponged away.
As with other rooms, clearing
bathroom clutter goes a long way to
making the place look like something out
of a hotel room instead of something out
of a bus station. Other quick fixes with a
big payoff: Wipe mirrors with a spray
glass cleaner, break out a new bottle of
liquid soap, stockpile the extra toilet
paper in an obvious place and empty the
trash. Clear away icky towels (maybe
even put away the throw rug) and put out
clean hand towels.
OUTERWEAR: Give a thought to where
your guests will unload coats, boots,
umbrellas and bags. Is your hallway
closet big enough? Can you set up a
foldable coat rack or do you have a set of
hooks on the wall? Most people dont
mind leaving jackets on a bed; just make
sure the bed is made and the room is easy
to find for folks who may not be familiar
with your home.
FLOORS: Is there anything worse than
having a dust bunny accompany your
guest down the hall? Vacuuming is such a
drag but it makes such a difference.
Remember, though, you dont have to do
every room and corner just the areas
your guests will see.
But what about that pesky kitchen
floor? Personally, I dont feel like my
house is ready for company unless Ive at
least tried to get the kitchen floor clean,
even though Ive yet to get it to pass the
Swiffer test. The Swiffer, in my experi-
ence, never lies, and no matter how much
floor-scrubbing I do, whether with rags
on hands and knees, or with a brand-new
mop, a final wipe with the Swiffer
always seems to come up dirty.
There is another way to think about
your floors, however, when preparing for
the arrival of guests.
No matter how bad your floors look
before a party, they will look worse
afterward, so dont sweat it, advised
Marie. Youll have to vacuum or spot
clean and mop after the guests leave, so
why stress yourself out?

A bit of chemistry might
be good for your compost.
Actually, we need deal with
only two familiar elements:
carbon and nitrogen. Theyre
the ones for which the bugs
that do the work of making
compost are most hungry.
Work is too strong a word,
though, because these
composting bugs do nothing
more than eat. And a
balanced diet one
balanced mostly with respect
to carbon and nitrogen
does them good.
Carbo loading
This time of year, the
microorganisms smorgasbord
is set with an especially wide
array and abundance of
carbon-rich foods
essentially, old plants or plant
parts. They are mostly brown
and mostly dry; autumn
leaves, for example. Other
carbon-rich foods include
wood chips, straw, sawdust,
hay and even paper.
Just as we humans cant
live on bread and pasta alone
(carbon rich foods, as are all
carbohydrates), so it is with
composting microorganisms.
So lets now peruse the
smorgasbord for some
nitrogen-rich fare.
The nitrogen comes
mostly from proteins;
microorganisms, like you and
I, need both carbohydrates
and proteins. Nitrogen-rich
compost foods include green
stuff: young, succulent plants
and plant parts. Theres not
much of this stuff around in
autumn, but there is some,
including grass clippings,
kitchen scraps, and spent
broccoli, pepper and other
garden plants.
Rounding out the
compost piles diet
When theres insufficient
nitrogen foods to balance out
all the carbon foods you can
find for your compost, its
time for dietary supplements.
Nitrogen-rich supplements
for the compost pile include
manures and nitrogen fertil-
izers. Manures usually also
add some carbon food, in the
form of straw, wood shavings
or whatever else was used for
bedding for the animal.
No need to get out the
chemistry set to analyze how
rich a food is in carbon or
nitrogen so that you can get
them in exact balance (which,
if you must know, is a ratio
of 20:1). Just keep in mind
that the younger the plant
part, the richer it is in
nitrogen. Also that rabbit
manure is richer in nitrogen
than is chicken manure,
which is richer than, going
down the line, sheep, horse,
duck, cow, and, finally, pig
manure.
Nitrogen fertilizers are
very concentrated sources of
nitrogen. One useful, organic
nitrogen fertilizer is soybean
meal, which is inexpensive
and available at stores that
sell animal feed. Just a
sprinkling of any nitrogen
fertilizer is all thats needed
atop every few inches of high
carbon food.
Compost happens
So pile anything and
everything that was once or is
living into your compost bin,
balancing carbon-rich foods
with nitrogen-rich ones. After
garden and backyard cleanup
is finished for the season, the
scale tips the other way as
vegetable scraps become the
most significant additions to
your compost pile. Balance
the food value of this
nitrogen-rich material with an
occasional cover of wood
chips or hay from a pile you
keep handy next to your
compost bin.
If you want to see how
youre doing as a compost
bug dietitian, monitor the
goings-on in your pile with a
long-probed thermometer and
your nose. If the materials are
moist and outdoor tempera-
tures not frigid, the well-fed
pile will be decidedly warm
120 degrees Fahrenheit or
more. Lack of heat reflects an
excess of carbon-rich foods;
odors are the result of excess
nitrogen.
Keeping records of what
you add to your compost pile
and how it responds helps
you remember what you did
that worked. But no matter
what you do, any organic
material put in the pile will
turn to compost even if
the process takes longer or
becomes aromatic along
the way.
Offer your compost a balanced diet, and keep track
