His silence here, with blushes, Paris breaks: "'Tis just, my brother, what your ang speaks: But who like thee can boast a soul sedate, So firmly proof to all the shoc fate? Thy force, like steel, a temper'd hardness shows, Still edged to wound, and untired with blows, Like steel, uplifted by some strenuous swain, With falling woo strew the wasted plain. Thy gifts I praise; nor thou despise the charms With whic lover golden Venus arms; Soft moving speech, and pleasing outward show, No w can gain them, but the gods bestow. Yet, would'st thou have the proffer'd comba The Greeks and Trojans seat on either hand; Then let a midway space our hosts And, on that stage of war, the cause be tried: By Paris there the Spartan king be For beauteous Helen and the wealth she brought; And who his rival can in arms subdue, His be the fair, and his the treasure too. Agamemon, while not the chief commander of the Greeks, rose above them in stature and importance

Agamemnon, although the chief commander of the Greeks, is not hero of the Iliad, and in chivalrous spirit, bravery, and character, altogether inferior to Achilles. But he nevertheless rises above all th Greeks by his dignity, power, and majesty (Il. iii. 166, &c.), and his and head are likened to those of Zeus, his girdle to that of Ares, an breast to that of Poseidon. (Il. ii. 477, &c.) Agamemnon is among t Greek heroes what Zeus is among the gods of Olympus. This idea appears to have guided the Greek artists, for in several representa of Agamemnon still extant there is a remarkable resemblance to th representations of Zeus. The emblem of his power and majesty in H is a sceptre, the work of iiephaestus, which Zeus had once given to Hermes, and Hermes to Pelops, from whom it descended to Agamemnon. (Il. ii. 100, &c.; comp. Paus. ix. 40. 6.) His armour described in the Iliad. (xi. 19, &c.) Agamemnon." Myth Index (2011): n. pag. Myth

Pausanias (ii. 16. 5) states, that in his time a monument of Agamemnon was still extant Mycenae. The tragic poets have variously modified the story of the murder of Agamemnon. Aeschylus (Agam. 1492, &c.) makes Clytemnestra alone murder Agamemnon : she threw a net over him while he was in the bath, and slew him with three strokes. Her mot partly her jealousy of Cassandra, and partly her adulterous life with Aegisthus. According to Tzetzes (ad Lycophr. 1099), Aegisthus committed the murder with the assistance of Clytemnestra.
