What is Microsoft Surface ?
Microsoft Surface :- It is a Iorthcoming product Irom MicrosoIt which is
developed as a soItware and hardware combination technology that allows a user,
or multiple users, to manipulate digital content by the use oI natural motions, hand
gestures, or physical object. The product provides eIIortless interaction with digital
content through natural gestures, touch and physical objects.
SurIace is a 30-inch display in a table-like Iorm Iactor that`s easy Ior individuals or
small groups to interact with in a way that Ieels Iamiliar, just like in the real world.
In essence, it`s a surIace that comes to liIe Ior exploring, learning, sharing,
creating, buying and much more.
It was announced on May 29, 2007 at D5, and is expected to be released by
commercial partners in November 2007. Initial customers will be in the hospitality
businesses, such as restaurants, hotels, retail, and public entertainment venues.

Microsoft Surface Description: -
SurIace is essentially a Windows Vista PC tucked inside a black table base, topped
with a 30-inch touchscreen in a clear acrylic Irame. Five cameras that can sense
nearby objects are mounted beneath the screen. Users can interact with the
machine by touching or dragging their Iingertips and objects such as paintbrushes
across the screen, or by setting real-world items tagged with special barcode labels
on top oI it.
SurIace can simultaneously recognize dozens and dozens oI movements such as
touch, gestures and actual unique objects that have identiIication tags similar to bar
codes. SurIace will ship to partners with a portIolio oI basic applications, including
photos, music, virtual concierge and games, that can be customized to provide their
customers with unique experiences.

How does it Feels ?
MicrosoIt`s version oI the multi-touch computer adds one very cool, though
impractical, twist: interaction with other electronics.
For example, in MicrosoIt`s demonstration, you can take some pictures. When you
set the camera down on the table top, the Iresh photos come pouring out oI it into a
virtual puddle on the screen a slick, visual way to indicate that you`ve just
downloaded.
Next, you can set a cellphone down on the table and copy photos into it just by
dragging them into the cellphone`s zone.
Then you can buy songs Irom a virtual music store and drag them directly into a
Zune music player that you`ve placed on the glass.
What is Surface Computing ?
SurIace computing breaks down traditional barriers between people and
technology, changing the way people interact with all kinds oI everyday content,
Irom photos to maps to menus. The intuitive user interIace works without a
traditional mouse or keyboard, allowing people to interact with content and
inIormation by using their hands and natural movements.
Surface computing features four key attributes:
Direct interaction :
Users can actually "grab" digital inIormation with their hands, interacting with
content by touch and gesture, without the use oI a mouse or keyboard.
Multi-touch contact :-
SurIace computing recognizes many points oI contact simultaneously, not just
Irom one Iinger as with a typical touch screen, but up to dozens and dozens oI
items at once.

Multi-user experience:-
The horizontal Iorm Iactor makes it easy Ior several people to gather around
surIace computers together, providing a collaborative, Iace-to-Iace computing
experience.
Object recognition:-
Users can place physical objects on the surIace to trigger diIIerent types oI digital
responses, including the transIer oI digital content.
How does Microsoft Surface work?
At a high level, SurIace uses cameras to sense objects, hand gestures and touch.
This user input is then processed and the result is displayed on the surIace using
rear projection.
1. Screen:- A diIIuser turns the SurIace's acrylic tabletop into a large horizontal
"multitouch" screen, capable oI processing multiple inputs Irom multiple users. The
SurIace can also recognize objects by their shapes or by reading coded "domino" tags.
2. Infrared:- SurIace's "machine vision" operates in the near-inIrared spectrum, using an
850-nanometer-wavelength LED light source aimed at the screen. When objects touch the
tabletop, the light reIlects back and is picked up by multiple inIrared cameras with a net
resolution oI 1280 x 960.
3. CPU:- SurIace uses many oI the same components Iound in everyday desktop
computers a Core 2 Duo processor, 2GB oI RAM and a 256MB graphics card. Wireless
communication with devices on the surIace is handled using WiFi and Bluetooth
antennas (Iuture versions may incorporate RFID or Near Field Communications). The
underlying operating system is a modiIied version oI MicrosoIt Vista.
4. Projector:- MicrosoIt's SurIace uses the same DLP light engine Iound in many rear-
projection HDTVs. The Iootprint oI the visible light screen, at 1024 x 768 pixels, is
actually smaller than the invisible overlapping inIrared projection to allow Ior better
recognition at the edges oI the screen.

Features of Microsoft Surface:-
Multi-touch display:-
The SurIace display is capable oI multi-touch interaction, recognizing dozens and
dozens oI touches simultaneously, including Iingers, hands, gestures and objects
placed on the surIace.
Horizontal orientation: -
The 30-inch display in a table-sized Iorm Iactor allows users to share, explore and
create experiences together, enabling a truly collaborative computing experience.
Requirements for Microsoft Surface:
Standard American 110120V power System: The SurIace custom soItware
platIorm runs on Windows Vista and has wired Ethernet 10/100 and wireless
802.11 b/g and Bluetooth 2.0 connectivity.

It`s Too early to say anything about Microsoft Surface :-
How cool is all oI this? Very. UnIortunately, at this point, it`s the MicrosoIt
version oI a concept car; you can ogle it, but you can`t have it. These stunts require
concept cameras, concept cellphones and concept music players that have been
rigged to interact with the surIace computer.

Microsoft Surface, Future of Computers:-
Future MicrosoIt Computer Technology Using New Touchscreen Computer That
Will Change the Physical and Digital World
Bill Gates will manage one oI the highest-proIile transitions in American business
history and computer technology. BeIore stepping down as chairman oI MicrosoIt
(currently $300 billion company that he co-Iounded over 30 years ago) and moving
on to philanthropy, Gates will head a Iew more high-tech projects and hopeIully
achieve his goal oI bridging the physical and virtual worlds. A secret covert project
code named Milan and is 5 years in the making was top secret until recently being
unveiled to the public at the Wall Street Journal conIerence. The project involved
transIorming an ordinary tabletop into a brilliant, interactive surIace with eIIortless
interaction with digital content through natural gestures, touch, and physical
objects. A revolutionary aspect oI MicrosoIt SurIace is its natural interaction with
everyday objects and technologies with an intuitive touch-sensitive 30-inch
tabletop with nothing but your Iingers. No more computer mouse, keyboards, or
wires. The multi-touch interIace allows the user to have hands-on control oI
photos, music, maps, and more. The coolest Ieature I liked was the photo resizing
and stacking that is similar to Macintosh`s Apple iPhone`s zoom gestures.

MicrosoIt SurIace Interactive Display

This idea is nothing new and is not the only company eyeing the new market, but it has never
been more than a prototype until recently being exhibited at the All Things Digital conIerence..
MicrosoIt SurIace made several appearances in movies like the Iuturistic movies Minority
Report and The Island. This new technology, the brainchild oI Stevie Bathiche and Andy
Wilson, is breaking down the traditional barriers oI people and technology by providing an
eIIortless interaction with digital media. It is apart oI Intel`s vision oI the near Iuture where
devices work seamlessly together. This innovative computer has price tags running $10,000 a
unit. MicrosoIt however expects prices to plummet over the next three to Iive years to the point
that it will be available Ior every home.
ey Attributes of Microsoft Surface:-
O Direct Interaction: Users can actually 'grab digital inIormation with their
hands and interact with content by touch and gestures, without the use oI a
mouse or keyboard.
O Multi-Touch Contact: SurIace computing recognizes many points oI contact
simultaneously, not just Irom one Iinger, as with a typical touch screen
computer, but up to dozens and dozens oI items at once.
O Mulit-User Experience: the horizontal Iorm Iactor makes it easy Ior several
people to gather around surIace computers together, providing a
collaborative, Iace-to-Iace computing experience
O Object-Recognition: Users can place physical objects on the surIace to
trigger diIIerent types oI digital responses, including the transIer oI digital
content.

Inside Microsoft Surface Computer:-
We begin exploring this radical new computer by exploring the components that
make up this computer. In order to get the table as low as it is, Iive cameras are
used so that each one can have a small Iield oI view. This translates into better
resolution and speed (measure in pixels/second) than a single camera with an
exceptionally wide-angle view oI the table surIace. A high-end PC is hidden inside
but uses mainly conventional components. Powered by a Core 2 Duo Intel CPU
and a 'newish video card running on 2 GB oI RAM.
Underneath the impact-resistant acrylic plastic screen hides Iive semi-inIrared
scanners/cameras, a projector, and a wireless modem. The surIace can read a
nearly inIinite number oI simultaneous touches, and are limited only by processing
power. The scanners are able to detect movements and recognize objects and
shapes placed on the surIace. The computer is able to interact and respond to them
accordingly. II the scanners recognize Iingers, and the Iingers have been placed
color circles that appear on the surIace, the projector sows colored lines that Iollow
the tracings and movements oI your Iingers. The Iive cameras are near-inIrared
devices, but that`s not because they are trying to read heat signatures Irom
Iingertips on the table. Instead, its because the entire surIace is bathed in light; by
illuminating the top oI the table, the cameras can easily see when things are placed
on it. Shining colored light across the surIace oI the table would spoil the eIIect
that MicrosoIt wants, so near-inIrared light is used Ior invisible illumination.
The internal modem is able to send and receive signals Irom any electronic device
placed on top oI the surIace. With its wired 10/100Mbit Ethernet and wireless
802.11 b/g and Bluetooth 2.0 supports built it, it is already more than compatible
with the various devices on the market already. II you place your Wi-Fi enabled
digital camera on the table, MicrosoIt SurIace is able to 'see the camera and pull
your digital pictures and videos out onto the table Ior everyone to look, move, edit
or send. Images are literally spill out in a pool oI color.
MicrosoIt has developed a square tag called a 'domino that can be attached to
objects so that SurIace can interact with them on the Ily. Instead oI relying on
RFID, the domino tag uses dots to encode its inIormation (hence the name). There
is a single do in the center oI the tag, three dots on one side Ior orientation, and
space Ior eight more dots that are read as data. Essentially, it`s a one-byte data tag.
MlcrosofL Surface

All oI the hardware is run by a special version oI MicrosoIt`s new operating
system, Windows Vista. SurIace applications can be written in Windows
Presentation Foundation or XNA. The development process is much like normal
Vista development, but custom WPF controls had to be created by the SurIace
team due to the unique interIace oI SurIace. Developers already proIicient in WPF
have been trained in the idiosyncrasies oI writing SurIace apps and should be
available to customize SurIace deployments. This is assisting in the transition Irom
DOS to GUI.
When something like a wine glass is set on the table, SurIace illuminates the edges
oI the object with a soothing glow and can display inIormation, pictures, or
decorative graphics next to and around the glass. When the glass moves across the
table, these items Iollow it. The possibilities Ior such a device are staggering,
especially when it drops in price and enters the home market. It`s even possible
that consumer electronics could be tagged at production.

To operate the 22 inches high and 42 inches wide MicrosoIt SurIace computer, all
you have to do is reach down, touch it, and push it. To make the image you see on
the screen bigger, spread your Iingers. To make it smaller, squeeze your Iingers
together. To move something into the trash, push it into the trash with your hand.
This new interIace allows to paint with a real brush, play cards with your hands,
and pay your bills just by putting your credit card on the surIace oI the display.
MicrosoIt SurIace also allows what is being called Multi-Touch and Multi-User
interaction. This means that more than one individual can interIace with the
computer simultaneously. With the MicrosoIt SurIace, that doesn`t mean a Iew, it
can support dozens and dozens oI Iingers at once.
Microsoft Partners Get Latest Technology:-
The Iirst people/companies to get their hands on these are partners T-Mobile USA,
Starwood Hotels and Resorts, and Harrah`s Entertainment. Hotels, retail stores,
and restaurants will easily adapt to this technology and make use oI this new
technology.
T-Mobile plans to adapt the technology by allowing customers to place any cell
phone(s) onto the surIace and then view a detailed display oI the product(s)
inIormation. This makes it easy and ideal to compare various phones at once and
easily keep or remove your choices. Consider all your options Ior possible mobile
telephones with all oI the products inIormation at hand. Harrah`s is also exploring
the idea oI integrating Iurther options Ior ordering Iood and beverages, and
possibly gaming or game-related activities.
Starwood plans to make the machines available in public areas oI select Sheraton
properties, including in Seattle, starting later in 2007. Starwood is exploring the
possibility oI users being able to select music through their personal playlist, share
photos, ordering Iood and adapting a virtual concierge idea.
Harrah`s plans to start using the surIace tables as a 'virtual concierge desk in
conjunction with its Total Rewards loyalty program at its eight Las Vegas
properties, which include Caesars Palace and Bally`s. People will be able to use the
tables to access maps oI the diIIerent properties, get details about events and
venues and create itineraries Ior themselves.

Touchscreen and Multi-User Computer History:-
The tablet PC was the conceptual Iorerunner to the new machine. However, the
tablet pc Iailed to capture the consumer market as much as MicrosoIt Chairman
Bill Gate predicted. Project Milian was the Iirst product Irom the SurIace
Computing team, a hitherto unknown group that has grown, under the radar, to 120
people. The company says the product`s genesis came in 2001, arising Irom
brainstorming sessions between Andy Wilson oI MicrosoIt Research and Stevie
Bathiche oI MicrosoIt Hardware. Wilson has shown certain elements oI the
surIace-computing technology publicly, as has Bill Gates. Most oI the products
details are now unwrapped. Visionary Bill Gates has been touting alternative Iorms
oI computer-human interaction Ior years, such as tablet computing and voice
recognition. Now the result oI six years oI collaboration between the company`s
hardware and MicrosoIt Research (MSR) will have the opportunity to reap the
rewards and bask in success iI all goes according to plan.
MicrosoIt SurIace plans on achieving much more and not sharing the same Iate as
the Tablet PC. Pete Thompson, general manager oI MicrosoIt SurIace Computing,
plans on this section oI the company becoming a multibillion-dollar industry. The
goal is have this technology to adapt to everyday liIe and be pervasive not just a
novelty computer. Price will be a major obstacle Ior the new machine to overcome
iI it is to catch on with mainstream computers. Like all oI the latest gizmos and
gadgets, prices start out high and quickly drop as the computer becomes 'out-
dated. Current projections Ior the unit range Irom $5,000 to $10,000. With this
price range it could be years beIore it is available to the consumer market, but
MicrosoIt plans on this happening much sooner.
