TRANSFORMER TANK
Transformer tanks are tanks used for housing the active part of the transformer which is immersed in oil. Tanks are constructions made of welded thin steel sheets. Basically, there are three types of transformer tanks:

1) Tank and tank cover jointed with bolted connection where

the tank cover is a flat plate reinforced with ribs, or where the tank and the tak cover are welded constructions (ill. 1). This type is adjusted for road transportation on special vehicles or for railroad transportation when it is placed on a wagon.

2) Bell-type tank (illustration 2)

has a construction reverse to the version under 1) above, i.e. the cover is designed as a bell and the lower part is either a flat plate or a shallow vessel joined with the cover either with welded or bolted connection. This type is also designed for larger transformers because it enables opening (revision) of a transformer using a crane with a lower load-bearing capacity (since the bell of the tank weights substantially less than the active part of the transformer).

3) Tank for railroad transportation (being a part of

a train), the so called schnabel (illustration 3) This version of tank is generally used for larger transformers where dimensions and mass represent a limiting factor for road transportation. This type of tank requires special reinforcements, such as suspensions on the train. * ill. - illustration

STANDARD EQUIPMENT OF A TRANSFORMER TANK

a) Tank bottom (illustration 4) A firm, welded grid constructed of steel plates or profiles. b) Pulling eyes (illustration 5) c) Lifting hooks (illustration 6) d) Oil-sampling valves (illustration 7), approx. 20 mm in diameter (DIN 42 DN 15) The standard position of oil-sampling valves is near the bottom, with a possibility of taking oil samples from the bottom, middle and top of the tank. e) Earthing connections (illustration 8) Two connections placed diagonally in the corners near the bottom of the tank. f) Oil-draining valves (illustration 9) Used at the same time as filtering connections. Placed diagonally near the bottom and the top of the tank. The standard size of the valves is 50 mm or 80 mm for transformers of more than 100 MVA. g) Supports for transformer lifting (hydraulic jacks) (illustration 10) h) Ladder (illustration 11) In the standard version, tanks are also provided with a ladder attached to them enabling an easy access to the transformer cover during assembly, i.e. while performing maintenance work. i) Wheels (illustration 12) On customers request, wheels can be fixed with bolts at the bottom of the tank, with the possibility of rotating the wheels to move the transformer along the longitudinal or transversal axis. ill. 8 ill. 9 ill. 6 ill. 7

OTHER
The tank is also provided with openings enabling inspection of the tap changer and bushing connections as well as cooling system connections. The construction of the tank does not allow any water retention. The whole tank is resistant to a certain overpressure as well as to full vacuum. Special attention is paid to connections which have to secure tightness of the tank. This is solved with flanged connections. The flanges are provided with grooves or stops preventing the seals from being exposed to excessive pressure. The seals are made of oil-tight rubber of round or elliptic profile.

MATERIAL FOR STEEL SHEETS AND PROFILES

A transformer tank is made of lowcarbonic, structure steel which is easily welded and has good mechanical properties. Non-magnetic, rust-proof (chrome) steel is used for the parts where connections for high-current bushings (> ca. 1000 A) are placed. Material: HRN DIN ASTM(AIS) A283 gradeC 321

- low-carbonic .0361 St37-2

- non-magnetic .4572 x6CrNiTi1810

PROTECTION AGAINST CORROSION

All metal surfaces are shot or sand blasted before applying the first coat of paint. The inner surface (which is in contact with insulating oil) is coated with oil-resistant paint, and the outer (exposed to environment) is covered with at least 3 coats of paint ca. 140 mm thick, in accordance with the manufacturers standard.
