Indefinite Articles
In French all nouns are either masculine or feminine; this is referred to as 'gender'. The masculine word for 'a' or 'an' is un, the feminine is une. Both become des in the plural. As a very rough guide, there is a fair chance that a word ending in the written form with 'e' will be feminine, eg: une banque. - des refers to an undefined number in the plural and applies to both masculine and feminine. eg: des filles ; des homes - A few nouns designating people use the same form for men and women, eg: un, une propritaire; un, une comptable; un, une collgue; un, une analyste. Definite Articles
French articles have to agree with the nouns they modify and don't always correspond to articles in other languages. If you have a noun in French, there is mostly always an article or some other kinds of determiner in front of it. The French definite article corresponds to "The" in English. There are four forms of the French definite article: 1. le masculine singular 2. la feminine singular 3. l' m or f in front of a vowel or h muet (silent) 4. les m or f plural The usage of definite article depends on three things: the noun's gender, number, and first letter: If the noun is plural, use les If it's a singular noun starting with a vowel or h muet, use l' If it's singular and starts with a consonant use le for a masculine noun and la for a feminine noun. I. Meaning and usage of the French definite article The definite article indicates a specific noun.
Je vais la banque (I'm going to the bank). Il prepare le gateau (He prepares the cake)
The definite article is used in front of the following kinds of nouns, whereas it is often not used here in English. A. When there are two or more nouns in a sentence, the definite article must be used in front of each one. Le papier et les stylos sont dans le tiroir. The paper and pens are in the drawer. B. Nouns used in a general sense L'essence cote trs chre en France. J'aime la glace, le chocolat et le gteau. C. Groups of people or things 1. Les ingnieurs sont trs intelligents. 2. French Adjectives - Les Adjectives An adjective is a word that modifies a noun. Adjectives can describe shape, color, size, and many other things about a noun. French adjectives are very different from English adjectives, for two main reasons.
1. In English, adjectives are always found in front of the noun, but most French adjectives 2.
follow the noun they modify (although the placement of French adjectives depends on the meaning of that particular adjective.) French adjectives change to agree in gender and number with the nouns that they modify. This means that there can be up to four forms of each adjective: masculine singular, feminine singular, masculine plural, and feminine plural.
court grand
courte grande
courts grands
courtes grandes
short big
II. If the masculine form of the adjective ends with an e, it remains the same in the feminine forms:
Masc. Fem. Sing. Masc. plu Fem. Plu. Meaning
jeune facile

jeunes facile
jeunes faciles
young easy
III. If the masculine singular form ends with s or x, the masculine plural remains the same:
Masc. Fem. Sing. Masc. plu Fem. Plu. Meaning

IV. The feminine of certain adjectives is formed by doubling the consonant and then adding e to masculine singular form.
27

VII. Completely irregular: There are several French adjectives which have irregular feminine and/or plural forms, as well as a special form when they are placed in front of a masculine noun that begins with a vowel or a mute h.
SINGULAR Adjective beautiful new crazy soft old masc beau nouveau fou mou vieux vowel bel nouvel fol mol vieil fem belle nouvelle folle molle vieille masc beaux nouveaux fous mous vieux PLURAL fem belles nouvelles folles molles vieilles

*Note : The colors maroon and orange are invariable i.e. they do not agree with feminine or plural form. e.g. un sac orange des sacs orange une chemise marron des chemises marron Position des adjectifs - Position of French Adjectives Most of the adjectives place after the noun:
1. Adjectives of color 2. Adjectives indicating forms and shapes 3. Adjectives which indicates nationality

Certain short descriptive adjectives are placed before the noun. Petit Bon Jeune Nouveau e.g. grand faux mauvais beau vieux gentil ancien long un gros homme et une jolie fille. vrai joli gros court
Other common adjectives placed before the noun are:Chaque, e.g. dernier, tout, premier, autre, quelques, plusieurs un autre garon parle. 2. Quelques lves vont au caf.
