Peace and all good! As we enter into this beautiful, but all too brief season of Advent, we all have the opportunity to reflect more deeply on the essential meaning and message of the birth of Jesus. We are privileged to present here (below) a reflection written for us by Fr. John Vaughn ofm, former Minister General of the Franciscan Order (and also a former provincial of our Province of St. Barbara). You may recall that Fr. John, along with Fr. Kenan Osborne, visited us this past summer to preach on behalf of our Franciscan Fraternal Care Trust, which supports our senior and student friars. Our thanks to Fr. John for this beautiful gift of his reflection. God bless, Fr. Chuck Readings: Is 63, 16-17. 19; 64, 1-7; 1 Cor 1, 3-9; Mk 13, 33 -37 The readings for this first Sunday of Advent are rich with themes: God is the great redeemer, the goel who takes care of the family and avenges wrongs. Another theme is that Jesus will come again and we should be ready. From still another viewpoint, Jesus himself is the goel: he sacrificed his life for the good of the whole family so that we might have everlasting life. We keep in mind that the real meaning of Christmas is the memory of when God came to us in the birth of Christ; Christmas is also the memory of the future, when he will return in glory. Christmas also celebrates the fact that Christ comes to us each day in the people we meet and live with. Because we are celebrating the return of the Lord, the key phrase is stay awake and alert! This means that we have to find times and places to remind us of what life is all about and how to make the most of it. Life means to learn how to love the way that Jesus has taught and shown us. God is love and created us out of love so that we could also love and thus share in his joy. I keep returning to a symbol I saw on my nephews ranch in the San Joaquin Valley: as they prepare to plant cotton, they make furrows and the way they make straight furrows is by looking at a white sack way down at the end of the field. If they keep the tractor heading for that white sack, they will have a perfect furrow in which to plant the crop. Advent is that white sack: it calls us to think about where we are going and keep it in mind. It reminds us that the best judgments in earthly courtrooms are still open to mistakes and injustices, while the judgment of God at the end of the furrow is always right and final.

2 | MISSION SAN LUIS REY PARISH, Oceanside, California November 27 2011

St Francis knew this traditional understanding of Christmas: he is well known for his devotion to the Infant Christ and we are familiar with the story of the Christmas crib that he built at Greccio and how this nativity scene helped people to understand better how much God wants to show his love for us and how much he depends completely on us. Francis said all these things and he also saw in Christmas the memory of the future, when Christ would return in glory. We know this especially from his Office of the Passion where he writes Most of us can remember waiting for the birth of a younger brother or sister or some other family member; we wondered what the child would be like. It was a time of wonder and expectation and joy. That is what Advent is in the life of our spirits: it is a time of reflection and of waiting for Christ to come into our world once again in some new way. It is not just a coincidence that we are incorporating changes in the liturgy beginning with this Sunday. Advent is a time of new beginnings, a time of hope for the future, for ourselves, hope that we can be renewed and be renewers. In many places Mass is celebrated at midnight on Christmas and Easter. Many Poor Clares and other contemplative men and women rise around midnight to celebrate thee Office of Readings. It is not only penitential; it is a reminder that we must always be awake at all times, waiting for the Lords return. A few days after All Saints and All Souls, here at Mission Santa Barbara the bishop blessed our cemetery with its beautifully restored mausoleum and columbarium. It was a good reminder that the Church is all of us, both the living and the dead. We all want to be ready for the Lord when he returns; we will be ready if we have used well the talents that he has entrusted to us. We know that this is a figure of speech and refers to a state of purity, It tells us that we should also be prepared to die and meet the Lord. Many people dont like to talk about death, and you get the feeling that they think that silence will keep it away. On the other hand we have the example of St. Francis who welcomed Sister Death; she came to take him not only from suffering but also from his brothers; she came to take him to the one he had prepared himself to recognize for a long time. Francis really believed in heaven. Once I was en route from South America back to Rome; we had to go through a drug check at a Florida airport. I exited the incoming passengers lane and rushed over to the departure lounge where; there was an officer waiting to check our tickets; in something of a panic, I said, Im just in transit, hoping that this would speed my passage He looked at me with a big smile and said, Father, were all in transit. So if were all in transit, then the important thing is to be watchful and ready as Jesus tells us. We had better stay in that exit lane.

CATECHETICAL MINUTE
We have arrived. Our journey of preparing for the New Translation of the Third Edition of the Roman Missal is over. Articles have been written, workshops given and talks & classes completed. Yet, the real work now begins. Our work is now to listen to the language of this translation and enter into the act of praying the Mass. Above all other descriptions, the Liturgy is our most solemn prayer and we should allow ourselves to be open to its invitation to enter into a relationship with our risen Lord. This new revision is not creating something new, but its aim is to deepen our awareness of the riches of our ancient Latin prayers, and to discover their meaning in our lives today. Our role, as the people of God, has not changed we are still charged with the responsibility to fully enter into a whole and complete participation in the Sunday Liturgy. This means we come to Mass attentive (on time), open to the Word (listen to the readings), and ready to celebrate and receive the Eucharist (Holy Communion.) It will take time to become as comfortable with this text as we are now with the older translation, but time and participation will cause this to take place. It is the same Mass from the original source. It has been recast with new sound and words, and it will hopefully invite from us a more profound praise of God. This praise is found in the richness of this new translation allowing us to richly pray and praise God from the rising of the sun to its setting (the third Eucharistic Prayer). Bill Bischoff

STEWARDSHIP OF TREASURE YEAR END PLANNING

If you have been reading the business section of either of our local papers you have no doubt noticed that the year end tax advice columns are starting to appear. The last quarter of the year is the time to take the necessary actions to reduce that tax liability that looms just around the corner. Many folks choose charitable giving as the avenue to reduce those taxes. If this is your plan please do not forget our parish. If you need to make a mandatory IRA withdrawal this can be done directly to the church and tax can be avoided. We know that there are many demands on your resources, and many charitable organizations asking for your gift, just remember that what you give to your church is used right here. It may be for food for the needy, education for our youth, or services to other sectors of our community, but it stays here. If there is a special need that you would like your gift to address just say so with a note and we will honor your wish. Thank you for all that you do and all that you give. Our parish is stronger and better able to cope with local needs because of your gifts.

TOWN HALL Q&A WEEK FIVE

Q. How will we prepare for the changes in the Mass starting in Advent? A. We have already been preparing! Since the beginning of this year, Bill Bischoff, our Director of Catechetical Ministry, has been placing explanatory articles and inserts in the Parish bulletin explaining the changes. Also, this month of November, we have introduced the new translation of various Mass parts into the liturgy. Basically, the changes will affect the words said by the presiding priest more than those pronounced by the community. All of this challenges us to be more conscious and conscientious about the importance of the liturgy. It is a great opportunity for all of us to deepen our faith and our prayer life.Fr. Chuck.

Del Escritorio del Prroco

Querida Familia Parroquial,
