ASSIGNMENT 2: COMPUTER-BASED COST ESTIMATING (BUILDSOFT)

Date of issue Date of submission Date of feedback Total marks

: 31st October 2011, Monday (Week 7) : 8th December 2011, Thursday before 12 noon (Week 12) : 16th December 2010, Friday (Week 13) : 10% of total coursework marks

Introduction: Cost estimating is the process of calculating the expected cost of resources, i.e. material, plant, labour and overhead costs that are required for a building element. A National Association of Home Builders study determined that only two out of five builders are using their personal computers for cost estimating (Julo & Willenbrock, 1994). This is due to many builders are skeptical of the benefit of using estimating software. Looking to technology today, computer plays an essential role people's day to day life especially in construction. Estimating software provide a database for cost estimate which would quickly formulate a price for bids.

Objective: To enable students to build-up unit rate in preparing for delivery of the bids by using estimating software.

Learning Outcomes: Upon the successful completion of this assignment, students should be able to:1. Build up unit rates from first principle by using the various cost components. 2. Perform estimating of cost involved in a simple construction project. 3. Demonstrate competency in using quantity surveying software for estimating.

BUILDSOFT PRACTICAL REQUIREMENT A: Task 1. Your company is participating in a tender exercise for the construction of 2 storey bungalow development. As a Quantity Surveyor in your company, you are required to work out the unit rate for the particular items which have been assigned to you. 2. You are required to complete them by filling in the relevant unit rates and submit all the working detail for built-up and all other information e.g. material's price, catalog, etc.

3. You shall state the necessary and reasonable assumptions for information that not provided in the quotations. Prepare such assumption in your detail working. 4. You are required to form groups of not more than five (5) in a group. Each group shall elect their group leader and name their group. 5. The allocated task for each group member must be recorded in the Assessment Record. You are required to submit minutes of meeting and submit together in this assignment.

B: Format of Submission 1. The submission of the group assignment shall consist of the following order: Assignment brief; Assessment record; Bill of quantities (BQ); Schedule of daywork rates for labour; Schedule of daywork rates for construction plant and equipment; Detail working or built-up rate; Source of data i.e. quotation and catalogs; and Minutes of meeting.

C: Assessment Strategy 1. This assignment will be assessed based on 100% marks, which will contribute partially towards the 10% coursework marks of ATGB3673 Estimating. 2. The amount of contribution is at the discretion of lecturer in-charged. Students who turn in less than satisfactory work may be required to resubmit the assignment. 3. Students who submit their assignment after the deadline of submission without any valid reasons will be penalised. Late submission will be penalised by deduction of 1 mark of each day late.

D: Questions and answers sections 1. Lecturer will ask two questions to the student either from build-up rate or principles of estimating or from BUILDSOFT software. The marks will be given based on the understanding of the student.

Meeting the assignment brief. Work is of superior quality, thorough and exceeds expectations. Use professional assumptions in the unit rate build up. All rates are done correctly and show high accuracy of market rate. Work is of superior quality, thorough and exceeds expectations. Excellent layout of structured report, relevant appendices, and referencing system. Work to complete all group goals, and show very coherent teamwork.
