Partnership

to

their aid
Platinum Gazette regularly gets calls during the rainy season of people lamenting that the rain has taken our houses away. The people of Kalkfontein did not call, they were too busy (literally) picking up the pieces of their lives after a devastating storm wrecked the village the previous night. When the newspapers delivery boy (aka the editor) turned off on the Lydenburg road on his way to Dwarsrivier Chrome Mine from the R555 after delivering newspapers to Kutullo, he immediately saw something was amiss from the dry debris hanging high in the bushes in the normally dry stream next to the road. Turning the corner, Kalkfontein was a mess. Large numbers of informal houses were wrecked by the strom. Clothes, matresses and furniture were outside the informal houses still standing, while everywhere people were already trying to get a new roof over their head. Disaster management personnel on the scene

and residents told the newspaper that the strom struck at about 22:00 the previous evening. Gusts of high winds, hail and torrents of rain battered the village. Disaster management personnel arrived at the village at about midnight to assist residents. By the time of the newspapers visit no clear assistance was forthcoming, but it was not long before the partnership between Government and industry sprung into action. During the weekend residents were assisted in various ways, but only one tent stood (the small one on the bottom of the page, donated by the Red Cross). On Monday everybody was on the scene, the district municipality, local municipality, disaster management on provincial, district and local level and the mines and NGOs in the area. Key roleplayers from the private sector were Dwarsrivier Chrome Mine, Two Rivers Platinum, Xstrata and Booysensdal (Northams new developing platinum mine). Local councillors, traditional leaders and the two mayors, Cllr Mogobo David Magabe from the Sekhukhune District Municipality and Cllr Nkosi Josias Mahlake from Greater Tubatse Municipality joined the personnel from the mines NGOs and to distribute food and tents (even mine managers put their past army experience to good use in assisting to pitch these). The central message during the speeches was that people should be economically empowered, and that it is not only governmentds responsibility, but also the responsibility of the large industries, such as mines.

Busy weekend for Third suspect appears Tubatse Police

During the weekend of 19 November 2011 and 22 November 2011 Tubatse Police arrested 41 people in crime prevention operations. The arrests were for non compliance of the Road Traffic Act, non compliance of the Liquor Act, public drinking, possession of suspected stolen property and drunken driving. The operations were carried out at the Praktiseer, Ga-Mashamothane, Bothashoek, Riba Cross and Ga-Madiseng flash points.. The Police conducted road blocks, checked on non-compliance of liquor regulations at taverns and stop and search patrols. During one of the road blocks in GaMashamothane village, five men between the ages of 24 and 42 were arrested in connection with possession of suspected stolen property. The suspects were found in possession of electric cables when the Police searched their vehicle. The five suspects (Dingani Mabelane 34, Laftas Msibi 24, Elvis Maoku 42, Maxwell Kgoete 30 and Paris Malepe 34) appeared in the Praktiseer Magistrates Court on 21 November 2011 and they were not granted bail. The case was postponed to 29 November 2011. The operations are part of Operation Duty Calls, which is aimed at reducing serious crime during the festive season. The operations were led by the station commander Col N. J Letsoalo. In the top left photograph are student Constable Malema and Data Typist Sehale with the electric cables seized over the weekend. In the bottom left photograph Captain M R Kgasago and Captain S S Phasha are doing stop-and-search. A third man arrested in connection with the murder of Congress of the People MP Jack Tolo appeared in the Sekhukhune Magistrates Court last week Friday. Limpopo police said Peter Piet Ditshego, 30, was denied bail and would appear in court with his two coaccused on November 30. The Hawks arrested him in Mamelodi, east of Pretoria, on Thursday after intensive and painstaking police investigations. Ditshego, Frans Matola, 33, and Solomon Nkosi, 41, each face one count of murder, four counts of kidnapping, one count of robbery with aggravating circumstances, and one count of malicious damage to property. They are accused of murdering Tolo at his home in Ga-Masha, Sekhukhune, on August 21.

The well-known stream at PLM Boerdery where the annual Wildevy 4 x 4 event is held, also burst its banks last weekend.

Fatigue before the festive season

Advertorial

What is fatigue? People suffering from fatigue often feels unusually tired for no apparent reason. The feeling may include a feeling of a total lack of energy or exhaustion. This in turn can activate feelings of depression and failure. Fatigue is very common in health problems many women experience, but is not exclusively experienced by women. Causes: It may be a sign that something is wrong somewhere in the body and that the body is slowing down in order to cope. It may be a sign of illness and should not just be ignored. Fatigue can have various emotional or or physical factors as part of its trigger. Some of the causes of fatigue may be a poor diet, allergies, Anaemia, HIV, Premenstrual Syndrome (PMS), Menopause, Lack of sleep after giving birth, Systemic lupus or another connective tissue disease. If the fatique lasts for six months or longer it could also be a sign of Chronic Fatigue and Immune Dysfuntion Syndrome (CFIDS). Emotional causes can include anxiety or depression, change such as going through a major life changing experience e.g. retirement or divorce. It could also be caused by burnout through wearing yourself out by trying to do too much without proper rest. Boredom could also be a trigger (if the daily routine just becomes too much). Symtoms: drained. Treatment: Keep track of your symptoms so that the correct treatment can be provided. If the fatigue continues for weeks a visit to your doctor may help determine the cause, especially if there is no recognisable emotional causes for the fatigue. Menopause could for example cause a change in oestrogen and treatment of this could resolve the problem associated with a loss of sleep during menopause. Supplements such as iron could assist in cases where the fatigue is caused by anaemia. A healthy diet may help with preventing fatigue or to restore energy levels. Skipping an important meal such as breakfast or indulging in high fat or sugary foods could influence your blood sugar and in turn your energy levels. Eating six light healthy meals a day could help keep your energy levels constant. Exerciseacts as a tranquilizer and can counter feelings of anxiety or weariness. Hot weather could also leave you feeling drained. It is important to remain hydrated during warm days to help keep up your energy levels. Rest and relaxation. A good nights sleep and changing your routine could also help. Try to lighten your worklaod and avoid too much caffeine and alcohol. Over the counter energy boosters may help on the short term, but if fatigue continues a doctor should be consulted to help address the problem. A total lack of energy and feeling extremely tired. This could also include feeling emotionally

DWARSRIVIER MINE

Of many homes, this is all that is left.

Reaching out when it matters

Dwarsrivier Chrome Mine which forms part of Assmang, Assore and ARM group this week reached out a hand of comfort to the community of Kalkfontein. This small settlement was devastated by a massive rain, wind and hailstorm on Thursday evening last week. Dwellings were damaged and some were swept away completely, leaving many without shelter and food. Dwarsrivier Chrome Mine heeded the call for help and on Monday delivered emergency relief tents and food parcels to the village. The handover was done at a ceremony where the Executive Mayor of Sekhukhune District Municipality and the Greater Tubatse Municipality (GTM) Mayor were present. With the Dwarsrivier vehicles loaded full of food parcels and relief tents in the background, Cllr. NJ Mahlake, GTM mayor thanked everyone who assisted the community and then turned to Francois Uys, Dwarsrivier Mine General Manager saying: We appreciate what you are doing, thank you. The event highlighted the concern Dwarsrivier Chrome Mine has with the communities close to their operation. To assist and to underline the commitment from Dwarsriviers side, senior managers attended the hand-over. They were also not shy to help erect the first of the more than 30 tents that were made available. At the function the importance of the relationship and taking hands between government, the mines and communities were emphasized. Companies were encouraged to not only take on their social responsibility as required by legislation, but to do more. Dwarsrivier Chrome Mine cares and is therefore already active with various programmes within surrounding communities. One of the programmes that will receive special attention in the coming days is that of HIV/Aids prevention and awareness. On 1 December it will be World Aids Day and at Dwarsrivier Chrome Mine not only employees are encouraged to know their HIV status, but also members of the communities surrounding the operations. In the meantime, regular visits to the community to ensure that they are getting back on their feet is routine while a reaction plan for disasters are being formulated for the future.

Pitching the first of the relief tents.

Planning ahead
The relief tents will only be temporary shelter while the affected families rebuild their homes. The tents will then be given back to Dwarsrivier Chrome Mine and kept as part of an emergency relief plan. This will ensure that when disaster stikes in future, immediate relief is available.

More than 200 families were affected

Food parcels were distributed in the disaster struck community.

The children were entertained by Father Christmas bringing gifts, sweets and other fun activities while their parents were treated to a Christmas meal. The event was held at Tubatse Chrome Club.

Little did we know that morning, God was going to call your name. In Life we loved you dearly, in death we do the same. It broke our hearts to lose you, you did not go alone for part of us went with you. The day God called your name, you left us with beautiful memories, your love is still our guide. And though we cannot see you, you are always at our side. Our family chain is broken, and nothing seems the same, but God calls us one byone, but the chain will link again. Hendrik Pitzer a loving husband, father, brother and friend, you meant the world to us and we miss you every day. We all still love you dearly and will meet up again one day.

Your views on the secrecy bill

On Tuesday the National Assembly in Parliament approved the controversial Protection of State Information Bill or Secrecy Bill as many calls it. During the voting process, crowds gathered outside Parliament and in most major cities protesting against the bill. Many referred to the day as Black Tuesday. The bill was approved with 229 votes to 107 and two abstentions. The DAs motion to delay the vote was unsuccessful. According to the South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) the bill can have a negative impact on basic human rights. The Commission expressed their concern about the impact the bill will have on the rights of journalists and whistleblowers who release information that is in the public interest. They may face up to 25 years in jail for releasing and publishing information that can be classified as harmful to state security in the public domain. The Right2Know Campaign expressed their disappointment in the ANC MPs who accepted the bill. In doing so they have betrayed the principles of open government and transparency that the ANC once stood for. The Right2Know Campaign will now try to challenge the bill in the Constitutional Court. The Helen Suzman Foundation also expressed their disappointment. This marks a low point in South Africas transition to democracy. It represents a significant step backwards in the long walk to freedom to which so many South Africans have devoted their lives. The United Association of South Africa (Uasa) said: It will become impossible to make informed decisions on, for instance, political matters like elections. If we are no longer informed about corruption and other wrongdoing by the state and politicians up to the highest positions in our government, how will it be possible to make an informed choice between parties? Editors and journalist all over the country expressed their concern about the passing of the bill that will now move to the National Council of Provinces for approval and then be signed by President Jacob Zuma before it becomes law. We asked readers what they think about it and why they feel the way they do.

Ms Ruth Maphanga said: It is not a good thing. Sometimes there is corruption inside and now they dont want to be exposed. They must account for what they do in government. The public must know about it. If this law goes through they will hide and do corruption.

Mnr. Roelf Burger s: Dit belemmer vryheid van spraak. Mense moet weet wat waar gedoen word om ingeligte besluite te neem.

Ms Gadi Rapoo said: Now people wont say anything in fear of being exposed or putting their lives at risk. The information will be kept secret.

Mr Isaac Tau said: I dont think it is a good thing. South Africa is a free country. We need to be transparent. Sometimes these people are enriching themselves now we wont know. We need to get to know the scandals like the tender issue of Malema etc.

Mr Sipho Mokoena said: It is bad. It is like the government is hiding something from the people. It is like they are going back to apartheids time.

Ms Rachel Magowa said: It is not a good thing. They are a public entity. They should not do things and be able to hide it from the public. It is going to influence our freedom of speech.

Mr Alpha Mawire said: I dont think it is right. It must be open to the public. The people must be able to know everything that is happening through transparancy so that they can know who to vote for. Mnr. JP de Bruyn s: Ek stem 100% saam met Alpha.

Mr Leondard Moshwane said: The Secrecy Bill. Im worried. I dont think it is good. It tampers with transparency. What do they want to hide from the people? Above: Mr Bethuel Kgoete said: It is a good thing. We have to protect state securities.

Mr David Mohlala said: It is not a good thing. The public should know everything.

Me Drieka Jacobs s: Dis nie reg nie. Nou sal hulle korrupsie net kan toesmeer. Wat sal die joernaliste doen? Hulle werk word net moeilik gemaak.

Dit is sleg. Wat gaan van die land word as dit nou al so gaan in die parlement dat hulle sulke goed goedkeur? s Me. Carika le Grange en me. Adel le Grange. By hulle is Lodewyk le Grange.

Rain did not dampen spirits at Toy Run
The Limpopo Valley Toy Run took place on Sunday last week. A pre-Toy Run event was held on Saturday with a potjiekos competition and stunts as part of the activities. On Sunday a church service was held in rememberance of those motorcyclists who passed away.

The games will be played at Ntwampe stadium and will start at 15:00. We hope to collect three points in both games, Makola added. Enquiries: Jimmy Makola, 082 407 6226 or Sydney Makoka, 072 869 4418.
