Ian Adams Intro Music Tech Rainey 9/23/09 Stay Tuned Stay Tuned by Robert Wyatt has a pretty

basic song structure. It is pretty much an ABAB structure or intro/verse 1/chorus1/verse2/chorus2. It can be argument that the last chorus ends with somewhat of an outro with the organ coming in, and a different structure than the first chorus, but either way it is two verses two choruses. In the intro theres about three notes being played by multiple clarinets, an oboe. There is two times where drums come in. On the second time the drums hit, the crash of the cymbals mask a quiet piano chord in the background. The first verse begins with drums piano, clarinets, oboe, a deep sort of string instrument, perhaps like a cello or maybe viola. A real bassy instrument comes in later in the first verse; I think it was called a double bass or something like that in class. Of course the vocals are first heard in the first verse. Pretty much unaltered as far as vox effects. The first chorus begins with a pickup line played by the piano, into a crash with the drums. Similar instruments to the rest of the song: drums, clarinet, oboe,

double bass (way more prominent). The piano line is also more prominent in the chorus than other parts of the song. The drums start a regular groovy beat in the chorus instead of random interruptions like in the verses. Chorus ends with a soul singer hittin a few licks. Verse 2 begins same instrumentation as first verse for the most part. Vocals have changed a lot. A noticeable alteration is apparent. When Wyatt sings the words somewhere, somewhere some delay might have been used, or reverb. His voice could have been doubled in this verse. Its hard to pinpoint what exactly it is, but his voice is different in this verse, which corresponds to the lyrics/meaning of the song. Chorus 2 is pretty close to chorus one, but with addition of trumpet and trombones which really support the melody. A counter melody is carried by like 3 instruments piano, horns, bass. The singer appears earlier in the song. This chorus is structured a little different. His voice is probably doubled, with a little bit of reverb. An organ is faint towards the end of the chorus. The outro slowly digs out the buried organ which appears out of no where. It grows louder and is only used at the end of the song. This might be symbolism of a grim funeral, or maybe a divine intervention. The stereo positioning of the instruments was hard to tell because one of my head phones broke, but in the intro the clarinets seem to be in right field, the oboe in the left. Most of the instruments seemed centered to me. Trumpets were in the left field in chorus. Trombones in right. Some instruments seemed to pan from left to right fields, but nothing really that insanely obvious.
