Want to be the best mom possible?

You are not alone! Mothers Of Preschoolers (MOPS) might be just the thing for you. Although mothering preschoolers is at times a lonely challenge, MOPS provides a welcomed break for moms; a chance for them to make new Christian friends and an opportunity for them to know they are not along in the struggles and joys of raising young children. MOPS helps moms by understanding their unique needs, challenges and joys - in this vital season of early mothering. Moms gather to experience encouragement, support and hope. Every mom is welcomed, accepted and inspired to reach her potential and recognize her influence and purpose within her family - and also that she is part of God's bigger purpose and plan. Moms really do make a better world! Our meeting is held on the 3rd Thursday of every month (Sept. - May) from 9:15-11:15am at Jarrettown United Methodist Church.

Spiritual Reflection

Awakened in Gratitude &Thanksgiving

November is one of my favorite months. Fall is a time of festivity, harvest parties, hayrides, bonfires, and sticky marshmallows and chocolate smores. Then comes Thanksgiving. The air is cooler, the lakes are calmer, and the woods are rich with color and scents that make you linger and think about what is most important in your life. Recently, I took a drive to my cabin for a day hike. Traveling two hours west of Lancaster, I arrived midmorning. I hiked, prayed, listened, and wrote in my journal. I lingered for over an hour on a sun-filled rocky crevice perched over a high vista revealing the vast wonder of creation. The sky seemed to yawn as it stretched its painted multiple blues and cotton-like clouds across the horizon. The lake below, like glass, echoed the skys beauty in deep tones of greens and blue. It was beautiful. All of creation seemed to move so slow, even the porcupine that emerged from the woods slowly turning away with quills fully engaged. I was reminded again, that beauty and strength are imparted in stillness, in the whispers of God heard in the wind, and we know when to turn, when to stay, and when to go. In the distance, several deer lingered as they grazed on the dew soaked grass, peeking up now and then, continuing to chew as they stared. I pondered how we are fed the Bread of heaven as we linger in the valleys of our lives we discover in those places, where we most question God, that we are most alert and ultimately most safe. I sensed a deep gratitude rise from the depths of this thirsty soul, yearning to be renewed for the journey of ministry ahead. The porcupine and deer were purveyors of this great mystery. I was thankful and my soul was graced with gratitude toward God. Awakened in gratitude, I thought of Thanksgiving Day. It holds memories for some that are grandiose and full of laughter and family and fun, yet for others Thanksgiving is one more holiday reminder of how lonely and sad, how desperate too, that no one notices them or invites them to share their home and table. I was reminded as I sat on this crevice overlooking such vast array of Gods creation, of the abundantly full and rich Thanksgiving Days Ive shared with family and friends. I was also reminded of one very sad and lonely Thanksgiving, due to the time and place I found myself, that I sat alone with my small Cornish Hen and boxed filling. Dear God, let this Thanksgiving at Jarrettown Church be one most memorable for all. That those who come to worship will enlarge their hearts toward others, and invite someone, perhaps even a stranger, home with them. I pray that no one in our church will sit alone on Thanksgiving Day, but all will share in the abundance of love and life and laughter, given by your grace through friendships and families. That all would be able sit down together with large roasted turkeys and homemade filling, and the warmth of your beautiful presence. Then comes Thanksgiving! Let it be so in us. Let it be so through us. Rev. Dr. Sharon Barley

Also, my dear Priscilla Circle, whose friendship I cherish. Sincerely, Evelyn Stevenson

A Commanding Presence
We all knew the distinguished man sitting in the back pews as Bart. Bart (Calvin) Kenty never missed Church. Every week we would witness Bart in the back pew humbly honoring God. He would always be dressed to the hilt, sitting with perfect posture communicating his strong love and emotion for his Lord. So it was, every Sunday morning after breakfast he routinely waited for the Jarrettown church bus to pick him up for his weekly commitment of going to Church. Bart continues to inspire me every time we have a visit at Fort Washington Estates. Because of recent medical issues, Bart can no longer take the bus to church; however, he is always with us in spirit. Though Bart traveled and explored every state in the union except for Alaska and Hawaii, he and his wife, Betty, decided to settle in this area. At Fort Washington Estate, Bart always greets his visitors with his contagious smile and strong handshake. This warm and gentle man turned 97 years old on August 8th. He was born in Clearwater, Florida in 1914. His brother Joseph was one and a half years older. It was only a short time after Barts birth that his father felt called to bring the family back to Lisbon, Ohio. His dad had a dairy farm there. While his Dad tended to the chores of the farm, Barts mother taught third and fifth grades in an area school. Bart grew up in Ohio and received his education at Ohio State. One of his fondest memories of his youth is how he met his future wife, Betty. They both attended and were involved in activities at Thurman Avenue Methodist Church. He passionately explains how it was under Gods watchful eye that he and Betty feel in love. They married in 1948 and had three children: David, Christine and Dianne. Barts career was in engineering, particularly illumination. As he designed lighting equipment his children grew up and were educated in Newark, Ohio. After completing their education his three children pursued career opportunities on the east coast. They were successful in doing so and this is where they eventually settled and raised their families. Barts children wanted to convince their parents to move to this area to bring the family closer. Christine enticed her parents by taking them on a tour of an ACTS community facility. Bart and Betty were easily persuaded after experiencing a day at Fort Washington Estates. They settled here in 1998. Betty died in 2002. During my visits, Bart proudly boasts about his loving family and how happy he is in his home. I usually find him watching a sports program or doing a crossword puzzle. He loves when we pray and is extremely appreciative of Jarrettown church still being a part of his life. Though confined to a wheel chair he insists on standing up when I leave. This GENTLEman is proof that chivalry is not dead! Submitted by: Gerry Brooks Visitation Pastor

All Saints Day

In the United Methodist Church, All Saints' Day is observed on the first Sunday in November (this year, November 6th) to remember deceased members of the local church congregation. Here at JUMC, it is a touching, bittersweet remembrance. For some, there is sadness or even residual grief that accompanies the memory of their departed loved one. Even so, many of us draw comfort from our having had the opportunity to honor the memory of a life that we had valued so highly. If you have lost a loved one this past year and you havent already been in touch with our church office to indicate your desire to commemorate them in our All Saints Day Remembrance, please be sure to do so immediately.

Park
Our ministry in Mondauk Park continues. The JUMC Ask Me to Pray For You red T-shirts have become a somewhat expected presence among many of the exercisers in the Park. I have seen numerous instances where we had to take a Saturday off due to weather or some other circumstances, and upon our return the following week, people were greeting us warmly and asking us where weve been. This month, we feature a report from Jack Weber, one of the moreshall we sayseasoned, members of our congregation, who not only is a long-time member of our Praise Band and our Choir, but also wears his red Pray-4-U T-shirt to Mondauk Park on Saturdays as well as several other days each week. One day a woman approached me and said, "You may not remember me, but I asked you to pray for me and my family since we were going through a time of tribulation, and you did. I replied that I didn't remember her name or the incident. She assured me that she could understand that since it was about a year and half ago. Then she said, "I want you to know that the prayer was answered and the family is fine now." Can you imagine? She remembered me and my prayer for her family eighteen whole months later! Thats the whole point, folks. As Jack Weber experienced in his anecdote above, this is a ministry in which we are definitely making a difference in peoples

in the

lives. Surprisingly often, people tell us how our being there in the Park has made that difference for them, and its those stories that we share with you in this column. What we also know is that there are many more people who we pray for out there under Gods blue sky, and we dont get to hear what the Lord has done in response. Sometimes, its because we dont see them again in the park, and sometimes, its because they are understandably hesitant to go into a lot of detail. By no means does that mean that the Lord hasnt heard and used our prayers. It just means that we havent heard about the outcome yet. I strongly suspect that in Heaven, we will. And there are many, many more people in the Park who we can see simply observing us and reading our shirts. Sometimes, its a little amusing to watch them try hard to look like theyre not reading our shirts as they walk by, reading our shirts. Its a big blessing for us to consider the fact that in every one of those cases, we have successfully planted a seed in that persons heart. What the Holy Spirit does with that seed is up to Him, and how that individual responds to the Spirit is up to them. But we have the joy of knowing that we have been faithful, as well as the indescribable feeling of being blessed. The feeling of being blessed by God is indescribable because there is absolutely nothing in life to compare it to. The only way to experience that feeling is to do something that God will bless. When you do that, you will immediately recognize the feeling, and it is powerfully addictive. You will want to keep getting that feeling. In the worlds eyes, that addiction will make you walk funny. In Gods eyes, that walk isnt funny at all. Its the walk of faith. Why dont you pray about joining us out there in the Park on a Saturday morning? If you need the red Pray-4U T-shirt, I have one for you. We meet in the church parking lot at 9:00 am. God bless you. Pastor Walt

November 2011

We have had an awesome Fall 2011 so far! We have taken trips to Nifty Fifties and had an awesome day of paintball battle in September. Parents were also welcomed out to Parents Night at Youth Group where we integrated parents and students and shared our outlook for the fall. We also held the So Youre the Parent of a Teenager Seminar in September. During this seminar, parents were taught about the cognitive development of teenagers, youth culture, and principles for better parenting. In October, we welcomed guest speaker Megan Faulkner out to Youth Group to speak about her trip with her youth group to Philadelphia last year for a service weekend. We then spent November 4 6 in Philadelphia serving the poor through food pantries, serving the homeless at church services, handing out food to the homeless in Love Park and praying for the entire city. We also spent a Tuesday night in October having a Halloween Costume Contest and Campfire night. At the end of the month, we traveled to Shady Brook Farm for Horrorfest.

Students had the opportunity to go on a Haunted Hayride, Barn of Horror, Alien Encounter and the Field of Carnage. As we look toward November, we have an awesome teaching series that we will be doing on Tuesday nights. We will be looking at The Real World: JUMC. We will be looking at six issues that are dominating the lives of our students: social media, bullying, parents, relationships, sex and living out your faith. Join us on Tuesday nights! Other awesome events for the rest of the fall: Sunday School at 11am: Romans (November 8 December 11) ICE SKATING River Rink at Penns Landing: Friday, December 9 YOUTH GROUP CHRISTMAS PARTY: Tuesday, December 13 Blessings!
