GAD: on Historys Claim History repeats itself, and the abuse for women were long started even

before civilizations. They may weaken through time, but time gives them strength to carry on. History narrates the impecunious ways of womens living since that Christianization of the Philippines, where in catholic had introduced the papacy system and marked the subordination and discrimination of eves kind imprisoned them to household chores, child handling and lovemaking only. Following the remnants of the destroyed paganistic civilization, we could find equality between men and women. The existence of lady priestess or what we called babaylan and the old tradition that women can inherit chieftainship and rule the baranggas. Zaide mentioned that women occupied a high position in ancient Philippines. Tribal laws and customs recognized them as the equal of men. They could own and inherit properties and could engage in trade and industries. Spaniards hospitality in 16th century, Spains Siglo de Oro, with great colonizing power, was then at its Zenith of glory and grandeur. Headed by King Philip II, catholism was spread that resulted abrupt and systematic decline of womens status thus creating it as the pivotal turning point of history for the Filipinos. The Scenario worsens when the Americans came, for they had extensively propagated the culture of a male dominated society where education was the tool to strengthen its foundation. Upon Japaneses invasion, comfort women appeared from the vastness of a large conservative eve proving the worthlessness of female in Japaneses era. Breaking the chain, a plain housewife, a widow, a mother, a woman stood still as the eleventh president of the Republic of the Philippinesher Excellencies, our late president Corazon C. Aquino, uphold the potentials of a female to lead, as a mother to her off springs. Today, a positive diversion is occurring. Women fight for their rights and men respected them. Through GAD or Gender and Development, people understand well the importance of equality, equity and empowerment. Together we could do what we believe then that we cant.

Another EDSA Anniversary When people reach the height, God will provide a weapon, the idols will be shattered, the tyranny will crumble like house of cards and liberty will shine out like the first dawn. These were Rizals prophesies in his book, El Filibusterismo, that was fulfilled on the 22nd and 25th of February 1986 where a mob of Filipinos collectively exerted their effort and flooded the streets of EDSA to outs the allege dictatorship of Ferdinand Marcos. The questions now, in its 25th anniversary, how far did Philippines had gone? Have we truly exercise democracy? Is the fall of dictatorship meant the rise of Filipinos? Or are we just wasting our time celebrating for a big stupid decision of coming together to restore the so-called democracy which actually does not exist? Truly that it was two decade and one half when the Philippines was put in the limelight of worlds attention by starting a bloodless revolt for reforms in the government led by Defence Minister Juan Ponce Enrile and Deputy Chief of Staff; Lt. Gen. Fidel V. Ramos as support to Mrs. Corazon Aquinos call for peaceful nonviolent civil disobedience through out the country of course with the help of the late Cardinal Jaime Sin. It was a moment of prayer and endless pursue of faith. But significant as it is, what were the real reasons of such civil disobedience? History claims, that it was due to the oppression of freedom brought by the declaration of Presidential Decree no 1082, or commonly know as Marshall Law, on September 21, 1972 which was based on the following grounds: the country was in urgent ddanger of violent overthrown, insurrection and rebellion; the Filipinos abused their rights; to save the republic and reform the worsening society. Thus, silenced the forefront of the opposition, Sen Ninoy Aquino by detaining him and later putting him on exile but still, as we all know, he was killed as he step out of the aircraft at the airport now in his name for his honor and bravery. His death then ignited nationalism that ceased to EDSA people Power 1. But now in its 25th year of anniversary Philippines is still the Phillipines. No moving since them, chained by its selfish people, detained by each crab mentality, the poors are still poor and even poorer. To what and whom we celebrate? For our triumph or our foolishness long been preserved. May be Rizals prophesies havent yet come, maybe historian were wrong, maybe the Medias are only artistic and creative. May be, just may be. But whats indubitable is that we have not moved even an inch.
