Politics has become a way - and perhaps the only way in India today - to amass unimaginable wealth in the shortest possible of time. Of course, entry to the club is becoming increasingly difficult because politicians have realized that getting one or more of their offsprings into politics is the easiest way of ensuring their wealth stays. The faade of youth is being used to legitimize power and money procured by dubious means. We, the voters of the country, are as much to blame. We dont demand accountability. We keep voting back to power the same folks who keep ripping us off. And in all this, we stay a poor country - waiting forever for the date with destiny. Almost every politician worth his name in Maharashtra has one or more of the following three: sugar mill / co-operative bank, college, power plant. Many times the corruption is quite blatant. The telecom sector has been sucked dry by various Ministers over successive decades right in front of our eyes, and we havent done anything about it. Look at what happened with the new operators who were literally handpicked for additional 2G licences. What happened after the election? The same person got the same ATM (Anytime Money) ministry even after it had become clear that his actions cost the country tens of thousands of crores. I think if the telecom sector is computerized the problems that we are facing would be eradicated. In todays world telephone is a necessity and one cannot do without it, and if corruption takes place in this sector the people will have to bear the brunt of it. You must be the change you wish to see in the world. Mahatma Gandhi We are poor not because we lack resources or wealth. We are poor because we are corrupt. And it is in the interest of those in power to keep us poor. For a politician, no amount of money is ever enough. India needs a person who can clean up the system. And it has to start at the top. India needs someone like Lee Kuan Yew, the man who led Singapores development. Singapore became a first world country within a generation, and it is also consistently among the top three least corrupt countries in the world. India needs to be made free of corruption before it can become developed.

The change has to come from within the political system. Someone needs to rise and be supported by the masses. That person has to make only one promise - to ensure a clean government - and all the development that should have happened in six decades but did not will happen in five years. Thats how much money is there in the system. It is not going to be easy because the other politicians, whose livelihood depends on their being in power, they will not allow such a person to rise to the top. We, the People, need to say enough is enough. And we need some among us to help drive this change. They have done it for 60 years, and unless we do something different, they will do it for 60 more. What can I as a citizen do about it? Eradicating corruption at the highest levels will create a major difference in India. More money will be available for spending. All public funds allocated for support and development will actually go towards those ends instead of it being siphoned away. One solution that readily comes to my mind is the untapped powers of the Internet. An example is of checking the availability of berths in the railways to plan for a journey. We can log on to the relevant site and check the availability of berths and fare. Earlier, to obtain such information, one had to make a trip to the railway reservation counter and wait for long or bribe them to get the job done. That was corruption use of the Internet has put a stop to this practice. Computerization of the railway reservation system has put a stop to the illegal earnings of a whole fleet of people who lived like parasites by exploiting the needy persons. They arranged reserved accommodation if their palms were properly greased. Computerization is one method to eliminate corruption. In the field of education, universities and education boards have begun putting up the results on the Internet. This has helped reduce confusion to a large extent; hence another source of corruption has been controlled because in the past there used to be manipulation of results. By virtue of computerized systems, these are now permanent records and can be referred by anyone at any time. Chances of faking results for getting appointments or to get admission to higher education are minimized. Payment of electricity and telephone bills on-line helps fight corruption. At times, you do not have the adequate small change to meet the bill; you have to depend on the person behind the counter to return the balance. There are times when that person holds up his hands and insists that you pay the small change or accept the short charge. When you stand in queue to pay these bills, you have to spend your time or rely on a third party to do it that third party could be the errand boy or your servant or some such character. If you pay online, you eliminate these irritants and at the same time, take steps to fight the

evil it might be in a very small way, but you would have made a beginning. These usually happen in public transport when the bus conductors pocket the coins that they receive and enjoy harassing the passengers.

These are all examples of corruption in our day-to-day lives. This sort of corruption in public transport can be checked if monthly passes are issued to regular travellers or books of coupons are introduced of certain denominations that would-be travellers can purchase in advance. Teach morality in homes and schools. That's morality in the larger sense, the concept of right and wrong. Unfortunately there are many, especially those who gravitate toward politics, who do not understand the word. Power corrupts, ultimate power corrupts ultimately.
