Year 3 Block B Unit 2 ICT notes

The ICT resources referred to in this document can be accessed via the Unit ICT Resources page and within the mathematics subject area. There are also guidance sheets for many of the spreadsheet resources. The notes below provide suggested learning objectives, starting ideas for activities and key questions. Children should have opportunities to use ICT independently as well as through whole-class or guided work.

Three monkeys spreadsheet Represent the information in a puzzle or problem using numbers, images or diagrams; use these to find a solution and present it in context, where appropriate using .p notation or units of measure The spreadsheet can be used to try out different possibilities when attempting to solve the following problem: Three monkeys ate a total of 25 nuts. Each of them ate a different odd number of nuts. How many nuts did each of the monkeys eat? Find as many different ways to do it as you can. Using the spreadsheet can encourage children to work systematically, exploring the effect on the total number of nuts eaten by changing the figures for one of the monkeys, and compensating by changing the figures for the others in order to keep the total the same. Extensions can be explored, such as: Q. What would happen if there were 24 nuts available?

Patterns of calculations spreadsheet Identify patterns and relationships involving numbers or shapes, and use these to solve problems This resource can be used to generate calculation patterns by adding or subtracting. Q. Look at the calculation pattern: we are adding 6, 16, 26, 36... What would happen to the totals if I changed this to 17, 27, 37, 47 or 17, 37, 57, 77?

Add and subtract_1_10_100_1000 spreadsheet Identify patterns and relationships involving numbers or shapes, and use these to solve problems This resource can be used to support adding/subtracting a multiple of 10 to or from a 2-digit number. This can be extended to add or subtract a near multiple of 10 Q. How can we show 53 + 29? Q I think of a number, I added 20, the total is 62. What number did I think of?

Area ITP Read and write proper fractions (e.g. 3 7 , 9 10 ), interpreting the denominator as the parts of a whole and the numerator as the number of parts; identify and estimate fractions of shapes; use diagrams to compare fractions and establish equivalents Take 20 cubes. Make a shape which is pink and yellow. Q. What fraction of the shape is not pink or yellow? Represent this using the ITP to capture childrens solutions. Q. Can this be done in different ways?

Multiplication array ITP Derive and recall multiplication facts for the 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 and 10 times tables and the corresponding division facts; recognise multiples of 2, 5 or 10 up to 1000 This resource can be used to find facts in the 6 times tables by combining the 5 and 1 times tables. Children can use the ITP themselves to work out and record the rest of the 6 times table. They should work in pairs to use the ITP to generate each new row of the times table, and then to describe and record it in terms of the parts.

Multiplication and division with a missing number or sign spreadsheet Derive and recall multiplication facts for the 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 and 10 times tables and the corresponding division facts; recognise multiples of 2, 5 or 10 up to 1000 This resource can be used to discuss missing numbers or signs in a calculation. Q. What is the missing number? How do you know? What would happen to the other numbers if I added 1 to this number? Q. What sign would make this calculation correct?

Multiplication and division facts 2 to 6 spreadsheet Derive and recall multiplication facts for the 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 and 10 times tables and the corresponding division facts; recognise multiples of 2, 5 or 10 up to 1000 Reveal the numbers above and then to the left of the grid one at a time. Find missing numbers as you go. Reveal some of the answers from within the grid and then some of the numbers around the edge so that pupils use their knowledge of division facts to complete the grid. Q. If this cell contains 42 what numbers can go at the top of the grid? What numbers cannot go at the top of the grid?

Area ITP Draw and complete shapes with reflective symmetry; draw the reflection of a shape in a mirror line along one side Change the grid size to 20 by clicking on the grid size button and selecting 20.

Explain that you are going to use pink and green squares to create a strip of 5 squares. Q. How many lines of symmetry does this strip have? Explain that pupils have to find all possible ways to colour such a strip so that it has 2 lines of symmetry. Set pupils to investigate this in pairs.

Create new shapes with identical shapes interactive whiteboard file Relate 2-D shapes and 3-D solids to drawings of them; describe, visualise, classify, draw and make the shapes This resource can be used to create new shapes from two identical shapes and/or a selection of shapes. Q. What properties do the new shapes have? Q. How many ways can you arrange these shapes to make new shapes?

Polygon ITP Relate 2-D shapes and 3-D solids to drawings of them; describe, visualise, classify, draw and make the shapes This resource can be used to create assorted polygons. Vertices can be dragged to change the polygons created. Q. Can you create a shape with one line of symmetry? Q. How could you change it so that it has no/two lines of symmetry?
