According to Char-
ity Navigator, a nonprofit
organization that moni-
tors charities, Americans
gave more than $290 bil-
lion to charity in 2010.
Thirty-five percent of all
donations went to reli-
gious organizations. Much
of these contributions can
be attributed to people
giving to their local place
of worship. Donations toward
educational services and pro-
grams were the second most
common types of donations.
Although charitable giv-
ing through monetary dona-
tions are important, men and
women can donate more than
just money. Here are some ways
to do just that.
Donate hair. There are many
different charities that collect
hair for individuals undergoing
cancer treatments that resulted
in hair loss. These charities col-
lect hair of lengths between 8 to
12 inches and turn the
locks into wigs for the
needy.
Donate your stuff. Before
tossing unused items into
the trash, assess these items
and determine if theyre
still useful. There are many
places that will accept
noncash donations, be it
clothing, electronics, chil-
drens toys, etc. For exam-
ple, half-way homes that house
abused women and children
Be charitable
without spending money
Donating clothing is one method of giving
that does not require a financial investment.

busy North Pole schedule so

new group JIT (Jerseyans in

speakers, for people who are un-
employed or underemployed, to
talk about their job hunting
strategies and tools, career
changes, interviewing; in other
words, being in transition. All

viewed from the back
appears straight.
When the spine is affected by
scoliosis there is evidence of a
lateral or sideways curvature
and a rotation of the vertebrae
(back bone). The Scoliosis
Research Center defines scol-
iosis as a curvature of the spine
measuring ten degrees or
greater on x-ray.
According to the Na-
tional Institute of Arthritis
and Musculoskeletal and Skin
Diseases three to five out of
every 1,000 children develop
spinal curves that are consid-
ered large enough to require
treatment. There are three
different types of scoliosis that
can occur in children:
Congenital scoliosis- This type
of scoliosis is often caused by
failure of the vertebrae to form
normally, absence of the ver-
tebrae, partial formation of the
vertebrae or a lack of separa-
tion of the vertebrae.
Neuromuscular scoliosis- This
type of scoliosis is associated
with neurological conditions
including cerebral palsy, spina
bifida, muscular dystrophy,
spinal cord tumors and para-
lytic conditions.
Idiopathic scoliosis- The cause
of this type of scoliosis is un-
known and makes up 80- 85 %
of all cases.
Other causes of scoliosis
may include hereditary condi-
tions, differences in leg
lengths, injury, infections and
tumors. Scoliosis usually de-
velops when the bones are
growing most rapidly, usually
from the ages of 9-14 years.
It is very important for
children to be screened fre-
quently as they will rarely feel
any pain when the scoliosis is
first developing. The symp-
toms of scoliosis may include
difference in shoulder height,
hip height or shoulder blade
height. There may be a differ-
ence in the way the arms hang
beside the body when the
child is standing straight. In
addition, the sides of the back
may appear asymmetrical in
height when the child is bend-
ing forward.
The treatment goal of all
pediatric spinal deformities is
to maintain function, prevent
symptoms in the short term
and long term and most im-
portantly to stop the progres-
sion of the curve and prevent
deformity. If the scoliosis is de-
tected early the child can re-
ceive treatment that may
control the condition and pre-
vent other problems. Several
studies have demonstrated the
relationship between trunk
strength and scoliosis and the
value of spinal strength train-
ing in adolescent idiopathic
scoliosis with curves measur-
ing 20 to 60 degrees. Treat-
ment depends on the severity
of the curve.
Mild curves should be
checked every six months by
the physician. In addition,
your pediatric physical thera-
pist should recommend exer-
cises that improve flexibility
and strengthen the muscles
that support the spine.
Moderate curves that measure
between 25- 40 degrees on an
x-ray benefit from bracing in
conjunction with exercises.
Electric stimulation also may
be successful for certain types
of scoliosis.
When bracing and exercise
do not slow the progression of
a severe curve that is 50 de-
grees or greater, surgery may be
necessary. Surgery can usually
be avoided if the condition is
detected and treated early.
Early detection is crucial.
If left untreated, the scoliosis
can cause problems with heart
and lung function.

this question virtually every day.
As a matter of fact, millions of
people are investing billions of
their hard earned dollars into
vehicles that answer this ques-
tion with a resounding YES!
There is only one investment
opportunity available that offers
all of these features simultane-
ously and its called an Annuity.
Suffice it to say that annu-
ities have gotten some bad press
since their invention over 130
years ago, some of the press was
accurate and deserving, other
articles were way off base. A
certain female TV personality,
who claims to be a financial ad-
visor, never has anything good
to say about annuities. Her in-
fluence over her viewers has
kept these good people away
from learning about the benefits
that some great companies and
their products have to offer.
This is truly unfortunate. She
likes to beat up the annuity
salesperson stating, Why would
you put your tax-deferred IRA
into a tax-deferred annuity and
pay for the tax-deferral benefit
of an annuity when the IRA is
already tax-deferred? She fur-
ther claims that the motivation
behind the recommendation is
all about commissions. This is
absolutely bunk and Ill tell you
why.
Firstly, what does the in-
surance company charge for
tax-deferral? Answer ZERO!
Thats right! There is no tax-de-
ferral charge as Congress
deemed annuities tax-deferred,
not the insurance industry.
Well, if not for tax-deferral why
would anyone purchase an an-
nuity and which of the three
should one consider for their
money; the TFA or traditional
fixed annuity, the FIA or fixed
indexed annuity and the VA or
variable annuity? In each case,
the annuity offers a death bene-
fit guarantee and probate pro-
tection in addition to
tax-deferral. Each of the annu-
ities also offers a lifetime income
through Annuitization and
herein lays the basis of a great
deal of confusion and anti-
quated information. Another
word for Annuitization is An-
nuicide, which, sounds like sui-
cide. In most cases when you
annuitize, you must forfeit the
principal to receive an income
payment for life or a guaranteed
period of time or both. Today
however, to receive a single or
joint lifetime income with your
spouse, Annuitization is no
longer required. Thats right!
You can have your cake and eat
it too. Not only can you elect
to receive an income for the rest
of your life or in addition
spouses lifetime, you retain
control of the principal too! But
theres more.
While youre waiting to
initiate the income, leaving the
account to grow as you prepare
for retirement, the insurance
company will guarantee a mini-
mum annual percentage of
growth to the value each year
that will provide you the in-
come when you elect it. Now,
not only will the income be
guaranteed for life but it will
also be guaranteed to be based
on a potentially larger income
base even if the annuity per-
formance was negative, poor or
zero depending on the invest-
ment selections and product the
annuitant chose. Imagine if
your IRA was in stocks and they
went down before your planned
retirement date or even after
you retired, with a properly
structured annuity your income
would be unaffected in any neg-
ative way! In fact, it could be
greater than what you antici-
pated due to the guaranteed in-
creasing income base
language of the annuity. The fe-
male TV orator never discusses
this preeminent annuity feature.
Every annuity offers a declining
surrender charge that once con-
cluded never re-appears like a
CD every anniversary. Further,
annuities offer a degree of
penalty free access during the
surrender charge period which

I
t is not uncommon to see an
athlete get hurt on the field,
court, or mat during com-
petitive athletics. It seems most
of us are familiar with the initial
signs of inflammation of an
acute injury and even the tape
or wrap that is applied to an ath-
letes injury during the initial
healing phase. However, there
is more to an injury then getting
through the initial stages of
RICE (rest, ice, compression,
and elevation). During this
healing phase many things may
be happening to the muscles,
tendons, ligaments, and in some
instances bone, that can in-
crease the athletes chance of re-
injury with all future
participation. Conversely, the
cause of the initial injury may
have been due to a weak link
in the muscular chain of events
that occurs with activity. Both
the initial injury as well as the
weak link needs to be evalu-
ated and corrected before a safe
return to play occurs.
Returning to play needs to
be a well thought out plan as
well as a step by step process to
ensure the athletes safety. Pro-
viding the athlete with home
exercises or additional condi-
tioning is always a good idea.
These exercises are to be done
in addition to the sport specific
conditioning to ensure addi-
tional strength or flexibility is
provided to injured area or the
weak link that may have
caused the injury.
How do we know when
the right time is to reintroduce

Question: What would cause my eyelids and
Tear glands to be red each morning?
Answer: Redness of the eyelids in the morning usually
is caused by blepharitis, an inflammation and/
or infection in the eyelids. Blepharitis often affects
both upper and lower eyelids. The cause can be a
multiplication of the bacteria that are normally on the
skin of the eyelids, or a blockage and inflammation of
the oil glands that open onto the edges of the eyelids.

Question: Are pink eye and conjunctivitis the
same thing?
Answer: There is substantial overlap. Pink eye is an
infectious form of conjunctivitis, most often caused by
viruses but also caused in some cases by bacteria. The
most important form of non-infectious conjunctivitis
is allergic, usually recognizable by mild redness,
substantial itching and no discharge.

hese days the economy
seems to have affected
everyones wallets and
has had us tightening our
budgets. Pet lovers are no ex-
ception. Our pets give us
priceless companionship dur-
ing good and bad times but
people are still looking to cut
costs, even when it comes to
their pets.
Medically, the best way to
cut costs is to focus on preven-
tion. Keeping your dog or cat
in good general health is the
best preventative for expensive
illnesses and conditions that
can be uncomfortable for your
pet and costly for you. Emer-
gency visits at night or on the
weekend can be the most ex-
pensive and can be avoided
with simple precautions like
keeping your cat indoors and
your dog on a leash and well
fenced.
The first step to
preventative veterinary
care is actually going to
the vet for a physical
exam. This should be
done annually for most
pets and every 6 months
in senior pets (over 7
years of age). These vis-
its can save a lot of time
and money by catching
diseases early and learn-
ing about preventative
care. This includes
heartworm preventative,
flea and tick control,
early detection blood
work and a check-up of your
pets gums, teeth, heart, lungs
and internal organs.
Take that extra weight off
your pet. Overweight pets, just
like people, are more prone to
some very serious health prob-
lems, such as arthritis, heart
disease, and diabetes. Its
much easier to prevent weight
gain with proper diet and exer-
cise than having to get the
weight off, especially when
pets are in their senior years.
The first step is to assess if your
pet is overweight. Your veteri-
narian can assign a body con-
dition score. If a pet is at a
normal weight, you should be
able to feel the ribs easily and
see a waist or hourglass shape
when viewed from above. So,
measure your pets food, mini-
mize treats, and maintain a
daily exercise routine and you
may prevent a costly illness
down the road.
Spay and neuter your
pets. This will have a big
health impact. For females, it
greatly reduces the chance for
breast cancer and prevents py-
ometra (an expensive and po-
tentially fatal uter-
ine infection). For
males, it removes
the chance of testic-
ular cancer and re-
duces prostate
disease. It also di-
minishes the desire
to wander and try to
escape from the yard, poten-
tially getting hurt.
Be careful with your pur-
chases. Replace things like col-
lars and bowls when necessary
and do so with quality prod-
ucts. One good collar is better
than a lot of trendy ones that
they can escape from.
Make sure your home is
hazard-free. Routinely inspect
your home for pet hazards and
toxins. Food hazards include
raisins, xylitol (artificial sweet-
ener) containing products and
chocolate. Poisonous house-
plants such as lilies should be
removed.
Consider pet insurance.
The plans are different; some
include routine visits or just
emergency visits. Therefore,
research for the plan that best
suits your needs. Accidents
and major procedures can be
costly and pet insurance is one
way to help defray some of the
burden.
Times are tough but dont
let your pet suffer down the
road by not preventing some-
thing small today.

he joys of the holidays
are many: Sharing
eggnog, exchanging
presents, trimming the tree,
contacting the police to report
a robbery. The last one cer-
tainly isnt a joy, but its an all-
too common reality of the sea-
son. But the holidays arent the
only times that home break-ins
take place. Theres no telling
what goes through the minds of
thieves, and preparing for any
situation is the way to avoid
loss due to theft.
In the U.S., a home is
robbed every 14.6 seconds, and
the average dollar loss per bur-
glary is $2,119, according to the
Federal Bureau of Investiga-
tion. Statistics Canada offers
that break-ins are not only the
most serious type of property
crime committed in Canada,
but they are also one of the
most common. In 2009, there
were more than 205,000 break-
ins reported to the police, ac-
counting for 15 percent of all
property crimes.
Despite burglaries being
down overall in numbers in
both the U.S. and Canada,
homeowners can still be dili-
gent in their efforts to prevent
break-ins and property loss.
Here are some strategies for
thwarting would-be thieves.
Break down cardboard boxes.
Theres no better way to tell
thieves about all the new pres-
ents you received than by ad-
vertising them at the curbside.
Burglars will see that empty tel-
evision box or other expensive
gadget boxes put out for pickup
and have a clue about the new
goodies inside the home. In-
stead, cut up the boxes and
bundle them with newspapers
so they are inconspicuous.
Lock every door and window
all the time including the
garage. Many people fail to re-
alize that the garage presents a
great point of entry to the
house, one that is private and
away from the eyes of con-
cerned neighbors. Once inside
the garage, a thief can use tools
in the garage to pick at the lock
on an inside door to the home.
Forget about hiding keys.
Thieves know about all the
places homeowners hide spare
keys. Youre not fooling anyone
with faux rocks or a key taped
over the door. If youre prone to
forgetting your keys, leave a
spare pair with a trusted neigh-
bor instead.
Dont advertise your status on
social network sites. You may
be excited to share your vaca-
tion adventures with friends,
but posting pictures of your va-
cation or telling others about
when youre planning to leave
the house can be dangerous.

Federation of North Jersey, is
expanding its Kosher Meals on
Wheels program in Wayne. The
Meals on Wheels Program pro-
vides hot, nutritious kosher
meals to people age 60 and over,
or those younger who have a
disability and who are unable to
cook or shop. Volunteer drivers
bring needed meals; offer a
smile, a greeting and a personal
contact to the elderly, many of
whom seldom get out. Drivers
are needed to deliver meals two
times a month. Presently, we
are accepting referrals for people
who would like to receive

now certainly may be
beautiful when it is del-
icately falling flake-by-
flake to the ground. But when
the snow slowly but surely
starts to pile up, the beauty of
a winters landscape can turn
into a formidable project.
A recent 17-year study
published by the American
Journal of Emergency Medi-
cine says that snow shoveling
sends on average more than
11,000 adults and children to
the hospital every year. Snow
shoveling can contribute to
broken bones, head injuries,
pulled backs, and even heart
attacks. Overworking the mus-
cles, falling, and being hit with
the shovel were the most com-
mon reasons for getting hurt
during a shoveling session.
Individuals who have existing
heart problems may actually
experience a heart attack if
they overtax themselves while
shoveling. Adults over the age
of 55 are more than four times
as likely as younger people to
suffer heart-related side effects
while shoveling snow.
Many people do not real-
ize just how much of a work-
out snow shoveling can be.
The physical demand of the
activity can be on par with
running on a treadmill, forcing
the heart to work overtime.
Compounded by cold temper-
atures, snow shoveling is noth-
ing to take lightly. Heeding
advice to be cautious can be
the way to stave off injury or
something more serious.
Treat shoveling just like any
other exercise and warm up
first. Stretch your muscles, jog
in place and get the heart
pumping.
Invest in an ergonomic
shovel. These shovels are typ-
ically lighter than traditional
steel shovels and have a han-
dle and design that reduces the
need to bend a lift.
Move smaller loads of snow
at a time. The average shovel-
ful of snow can weigh 20
pounds or more, so lifting less
should provide some relief.
Push the snow as much as
you can to displace it. Should
you have to lift it, bend at the
knees. Do not twist or throw
the snow over your shoulder or
you risk back injury.
Take a break every few min-
utes to catch your breath and
have some water. It is easy to
become dehydrated or over-
heated while shoveling, but
not know it due to the cold.
Wear the proper footwear to
avoid falls on ice and snow.
Many injuries occur due to
falls on slippery surfaces.
For those who are not physi-
cally fit enough to shovel
snow, consider investing in a
snow blower or pay to have
the snow removed.

lenged to find a way to get back
in shape while focusing on the

the holiday season in-
volves spending time
in the kitchen whipping up
delicious treats. Particularly
for young children, baking
sugar cookies with Mom or
Dad and then decorating the
creations can be a festive way
to spend a day.
Those short on time can
turn to store-made sugar
cookie dough for their cookie
making, but those who want
the authentic taste of cookies
from scratch, there are many
recipes from which to choose.
This recipe for rolled
sugar cookies produces cook-
ies that will hold up well to
cutting and baking. Theyre
also quite delicious.
Rolled Sugar Cookies
(Makes 5 dozen)
1

2 cups butter, softened
3 cups white sugar
4 eggs
2 teaspoons vanilla extract
5 cups all-purpose flour
2 teaspoons baking powder
1 teaspoon salt
1. Cream together the butter
and sugar in a large bowl until
smooth. Beat in the eggs and
vanilla.
2. Mix the dry ingredients to-
gether and add to the wet in-
gredients until incorporated.
Cover and refrigerate the
dough for at least one hour.
3. Preheat the oven to 400 F.
On a surface coated with
some confectioners sugar, roll
out the dough to between 1/4
and 1/2 inch thickness (a
thinner cookie will be
crispier). Cut out shapes with
a cookie cutter.
4. Line a cookie sheet with
parchment paper. Place cook-
ies 1 inch apart on the parch-
ment.
5. Bake around 5 to 7 min-
utes, or just until the edges of
the cookies start to brown.
Remove promptly from the
cookie sheet and cool on a
rack.
6. Decorate the cookies using
icing (recipe below) when the
cookies cool, or sprinkle with
colored sugar while cookies
are warm.
Cookie Icing
(Covers 1 dozen cookies)
1 cup confectioners sugar
2 teaspoons milk
2 teaspoons light corn syrup
1
4 teaspoon almond extract
Assorted food coloring
1. In a small bowl, stir to-
gether confectioners sugar
and milk until smooth. Beat
in corn syrup and almond ex-
tract until icing is smooth and
glossy. If icing is too thick,
add more corn syrup.
2. Divide the icing into separate
containers to add choice of col-
ors. Mix until well blended.
3. Use a piping tip and pastry
bag to outline the cookie in a
thin bead of the icing. Allow to
dry.
3. Then use a paintbrush to fill
in the design with the remain-
der of the icing.
4. Wait an hour or more for the
icing to completely harden be-
fore serving.
Note: Gel colors found in
craft stores in the cake deco-
rating aisle produce deep col-
ors with little product
necessary. Theyre also less
likely to thin out icings than
liquid food coloring.

ownership is one that
lives on in spite of the
global economic struggles. The
process of buying a home can
be an emotional roller coaster
ride, with feelings of excite-
ment mixed in with exhaus-
tion, fear and uncertainty.
Over the last several
years, the real estate market
has been turned upside down,
and many prospective buyers
have begun to question some
of the conventional wisdom
associated with buying a home.
While such skepticism might
be a healthy attitude in the
current market, prospective
buyers particularly those
who have never purchased a
home before should avoid
the following mistakes that
buyers make regardless of
whether the market is up or
down.
Failure to get qualified be-
forehand. Mortgage qualifica-
tion is essential when buying a
home, as it gives buyers preap-
proval for a loan before they
make any offers. Making an
offer on a home before you
know what the bank is willing
to lend you is a waste of time
for everyone involved, includ-
ing you, the seller and the real
estate agents involved. Some
agents will not show a home if
you dont have a preapproval.
Once preapproved for a loan,
dont take any steps that might
put that approval in jeopardy.
This includes anything that
might drastically alter your
credit score.
Being blindsided by addi-
tional costs. First-time home-
buyers, once they have moved
into their home, often experi-
ence some sticker shock when
the additional expenses associ-
ated with home ownership
arise. These additional ex-
penses include property tax
and insurance costs and can be
substantial. Even those buying
a condominium or co-op
should expect monthly main-
tenance fees even if their new
place is brand new and needs
no maintenance.

loans to applicants who, in
hindsight, could not actually
afford all that they were ap-
proved to borrow. The result
was many people buying
homes they could not afford,
and then suffering some steep
consequences, including fore-
closure, when the first mort-
gage payment came due or the
interest rate rose. First-time
and even veteran buyers must
avoid shooting for the moon
when it comes to buying a
home, and instead only buy
one they know they can afford.
What the banks says you can
afford isnt always the same as
what you know you can afford.
Only buy a home you know
you can afford, regardless of
whether the bank has ap-
proved you for a larger loan.
Pigeonholing you into an in-
adequate living situation. Just
like buyers shouldnt go over-
board, they also must avoid
compromising on the things
that are most important to
them. For example, many of
todays buyers, fully aware of
the rash of foreclosures and all
the housing horror stories of
the last several years, are reti-
cent to commit to a home, and
might compromise with a
condo or co-op. But if a home
is what you really want, and
another living situation that
mirrors apartment life is going
to make you miserable, dont
settle for that situation for the
sake of security. Doing so could
cost you financially, especially
when you realize the situation
isnt what youd hoped for and
look to sell earlier than is ideal.
Skimping on the cost of an
inspector. An inspector is your
last chance to find out if a
home is your dream home or a
money pit. Even if a house ap-
pears to be everything you
want, dont close on the sale
until the house has been thor-
oughly inspected. The old
adage that advises against
judging a book by its cover cer-
tainly applies to buying a
home, and prospective buyers
should enlist the services of a
qualified inspector before clos-
ing on the sale of a home.
