Materials:
1 Standard pack (500-count) of
Q-tips cotton swabs
3 Styrofoam balls; 1 large, 1
medium, 1 small, (no smaller
than 2 inches in diameter)
1 brown pipe cleaner
1 sheet wax paper
1 craft stick or floral stake
Child-safe scissors
Child-safe, non-toxic black
paint
Child-safe, non-toxic orange
paint
Directions:
Have an adult cut the bottom
off the largest Styrofoam ball,
so the piece can lay flat upon a
table or surface.
Using a
craft stick or
floral stake,
stack all
three Styro-
f o a m
balls from
largest at
the bottom,
to smallest
at the top to form one standing
figure.
Fold and twist five cotton
swabs in half; dip nine halves
into the black paint and one into
the orange paint. Lay flat on
wax paper to dry.
Cut pipe cleaner in half;
insert into sides of middle
Styrofoam ball as arms.
Begin folding cotton swabs;
insert into foam balls until com-
pletely covered.
Insert black cotton swabs
into top ball for coal eyes and
mouth. Insert orange cotton
swab as the carrot nose.

because it is not harmful to the
tree, and is effective at reflecting
sunlight to moderate changes in
the temperature of the trunk.
The trees most susceptible to
southwest injury are those with
thin bark. Some species, such as
honey locust and apple trees,
often have thin bark. Young
trees often have thin bark, and
will definitely benefit from
white paint.
It is not necessary to remove
the paint during the next grow-
ing season. As the tree grows
and as the paint is exposed to the
environment, it will naturally
fall away. You may need to reap-
ply it next winter.

Painting the trunks of trees
with a white latex (do not use
oil-based paint) is a way to pro-
tect the trees from southwest
injury. Southwest injury results
from the daily warming of the
tree trunk and nightly freezing.
The great variation in our day
and night temperatures plays a
major role in this disorder. It is
called southwest injury because
the damage often develops on
the exposed southwestern side
of the tree. This is where the
greatest warming occurs on
sunny days. This warmed area
will often lose its winter hardi-
ness early due to the warming of
the trunk.
The outer layers of the tree
trunk may then be injured or
killed. This results in the bark
splitting or separating from the
trunk. Damage to the layers that
carry nutrients can seriously dis-
rupt the health of the tree.

Rombauer lived in the
Compton Heights neighbor-
hood of St. Louis, and neither
woman had much experience
in the kitchen. Irmas husband
committed suicide, which
made it necessary for the two
women to find a way they
could support themselves.
Irma gathered recipes, and her
daughter illustrated them. The
first edition had a definite
German-American flavor,
which reflected their neighbor-
hood. The editions that fol-
lowed made The Joy of
Cooking a national bestseller,
and many consider it one of
the better cookbooks ever.
And now for the good part.

Since so few copies of the first
edition exist, your signed copy
is probably worth about
$5,000, perhaps more at auc-
tion. The 1936 edition is val-
ued in the $140 to $250 range,
and the 1962 edition (which I
like and use), goes for $30 to
$50, depending on condition.
Another popular edition is the
one issued in 1943 because of
its sugarless recipes, neces-
sary because of war rationing.

formed a mass that covered
many acres and was even
growing in shady areas with
only 9 inches of rain per year.
Blue Avena or Blue Oat
Grass. A beautiful but under-
used grass, this plant has the
pleasant attribute of being a
beautiful shade of blue.
Thriving in full sun to part
shade, this is a good substitute
for blue fescue and does much
better in the heat of summer.
Blue Avena stays evergreen in
winter.
Maiden Grass. Of the
taller grasses, this is one of the
most spectacular available.
With 20 species and 50 culti-
vars available, they range from
three feet tall to 15-foot giants.
Miscanthus sinensis at 4 to 5
feet is the most popular and the
most widely available species.
Karl Foerster Grass.
Voted Perennial Plant of the
Year in 2001, this is a good
choice if you want a grass that
doesnt get too wide and stays
under three feet tall. The seed

2 tablespoons vegetable oil

1 egg
Granulated sugar
Directions:
Heat oven to 375 F. Remove
wrappers from chocolates. Stir
cookie mix, oil, water, and egg
in a medium bowl until soft
dough forms. Shape dough into
one-inch balls. Roll in granulat-
ed sugar; place on ungreased
cookie sheet. Bake eight to 10
minutes or until lightly
browned. Immediately press a
chocolate into center of each
cookie; cookie will crack around
edges. Remove from cookie
sheet to wire rack. Cool com-
pletely.

Here are a few ideas to help
you save money during the
coldest months of the year.
1. If you havent had your fur-
nace inspected this year, its not
too late to do so. Consider buy-
ing one of the service plans. If
your furnace quits in the middle
of a cold night, you want to
know that some or all of the
repair costs are covered.
2. Be sure youre not block-
ing any air vents with furniture.
3. If you didnt caulk your
windows and are feeling drafts
when the wind blows, head to
the hardware store for plastic
window sheeting. This clear
plastic goes on the inside of win-
dows with the adhesive tape
thats supplied. Shrink the plas-
tic tight with a hair dryer and
trim off the excess. For a long-
term fix, consider replacement
windows.
4. While youre at the hard-
ware store, pick up two or three
furnace filters. Change them on
the first of every month during
the winter.
5. If you have ceiling fans,
run them in reverse to move the
warm ceiling air down into the
rooms.
6. Consider turning down the
temperature on your water
heater. Generally theyre set at
140 degrees F. You can still get a
hot shower, and it will save three
to five percent of your energy
bill, with the temperature set at
120 F.
7. If youre home during the
day, open the drapes on the
sunny side of the house, and
close them when the sun moves.
8. Turn down the temperature
on your thermostat one degree.
In a few days, turn it down
another degree. You likely wont
feel the difference, but youll
save two to five percent on your
heating costs. Invest in a pro-
grammable thermostat set to
lower the temperature when no
one is home.

around. It is my sales
motto, if you will, she
says. We go through
at least 700 items a
week. We are constant-
ly pricing new mer-
chandise. I have peo-
ple who shop here
every single day
because they know we
have new items and mark
downs revolving constantly.
In fact, Jasmine has so many
consignors she is booked out
until mid-January. At a standing
90-day consignment, the con-
signor receives 40 percent of the
selling price.
After 30 days, if anything is
still here, it gets marked down
25 percent. After 60 days, if
anything is still here, it gets
marked half off. It is an auto-
matic mark-down system, and
our customers love it, she says.
As the holidays are approach-
ing, Jasmine says people are
coming in looking for gifts, jew-
elry in particular. Some of the
items we get in are still brand
new, with the tags still
attached, Jasmine says.
Seven years strong, Jasmine
started the business due, in large
part, to her passion and love for

Albuquerque has a very strong
following for consignment, she
says, adding that she saw a real
need for an upscale consignment
shop in the Northeast Heights.

What Types of Hearing
Aids Are Available?
The type of hearing aid
you should consider
depends on your hearing
loss. There are large ones
that fill up your entire ear.
These are usually of an older
type, and are used for bigger
hearing losses. A person who
has such a severe loss that
they need this type of hear-
ing aid usually needs a lot of
power. These types dont
have the latest technology or
much of anything to help you
hear as clearly as possible.
This type of hearing aid usu-
ally costs less than any other
type because the demand for
them is less.
The hearing aids that fit in
your ear vary widely from
ones that fill the canal to
small ones that fit deep
down. Today, this type of
hearing aid can be made to
have a great deal of power.
They very often have com-
puter chips in them, and can
make voices sound clearer. A
telecoil can be added to
make phone use easier, and
cosmetically they are more
appealing. If they are fit prop-
erly, you should not be able
to feel them.
The large hearing aid your
grandfather wore is called a
BTE (behind the ear). They
are powerful, with large bat-
teries, and can be made to
have almost any feature you
want in them. They are very
dependable, but offer some
challenges for eyeglass
wearers. These are the work-
horses of hearing aids.
What About Open Fit
Hearing Aids?
These are all the rage. I
wear one, and I like it. The
first thing a traditional hear-
ing aid does is plug your ear.
An open fit hearing aid never
does that, so it doesnt sound
like your head is in a barrel.
These usually come with
algorithms in them that can
be accessed, depending on
your changing hearing
requirements. I go running
with mine. If theyre fit cor-
rectly, they dont fall out.
Open fit hearing aids are
state of the art.
Whats the Cost?
The cost of hearing aids
ranges from $16 to many
thousands of dollars. You
should get a hearing aid from
a major supplier one thats
sold everywhere and has a
good warranty and liberal
return policy. You can expect
to pay between $600 and
$1,400 for a good hearing
aid. The vendor should pro-
vide insurance for loss, dam-
age and repair for an extend-
ed time.
I cant find a lot of differ-
ence in the various brands.

Where Should I Start?
First, have your hearing
evaluated and get a copy of
the audiogram. It is your right

make calls and ask ques-

fortable working with. In my
opinion, the success of your
fitting has more to do with the

than it does with the actual

make sure our living environ-
ment is safe, especially with the

some steps you can take:
Reduce clutter. Magazines
and newspapers stacked by the
recliner are especially danger-
ous because of the slick pages.
Dont allow anything to remain
in walking paths through
rooms.
In the bathroom, have grab
bars installed next to the tub and
toilet.
Make sure the lamp next to
your bed is easy to reach. Keep
a flashlight there in case the
power goes out.
If you have stairs, make
sure the railings are secure.
Turn on more lights. If you
dont have an overhead light in
each room, plug in a lamp that
can be turned on as you enter a
room.
Never have an electrical
cord stretched across an area
where you walk.
Put a night-light in the bath-
room and at the top of stairs.
Make sure rugs have a non-
skid backing and arent placed
in traffic areas.
