EVENTS

The holiday season is well underway, and several exciting events in the Camp Lejeune area are scheduled throughout the month. In addition to the CLR-27 Family Holiday Party on Dec. 1, and John / Jane Wayne Day on Dec. 9, there are several other events, such as the tree lighting at Tarawa Terrace, ornament painting at the YMCA, holiday concert at the base theater, personal finance and Marine Corps Family Team Building classes, and Return and Reunion workshops, so mark your calendars. Our 11.2 deployment is well underway, and all are doing a superb job accomplishing the mission. We enjoyed a Thanksgiving meal and were thankful for modern-day technology and the ability to keep in touch with our families by phone and the internet. This December marks the 70th anniversary of the attack on Pearl Harbor. We will observe this on Dec. 7, as National Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day, proclaimed by the President last year so that we will never forget the 3,500 U.S. service members and civilians who were killed in action or injured on that fateful Sunday in 1941. Due to the fact that many families will be driving long distances during the holiday breaks and due to the inclement weather conditions for travelers, we added a page in this newsletter full of safe-driving tips. Visit the Marine Corps Community Services Lejeune website to learn of the many free resources available and 2d MLG Facebook for the latest and greatest news and photos of your Marines and Sailors. It is believed wild turkey (the bird, not the Kentucky bourbon) was probably served at this Thanksgiving ceremony, originating this tradition. The first Thanksgiving in a British or English speaking colony was 1607 in Virginia, or 14 years before the Pilgrims got lost and settled in New England. Take your pick for the First Thanksgiving, but it wasnt the Pilgrims in Massachusetts. Actually, there have been many Thanksgiving days in American history. Our current celebration on the last Thursday of November was established by Congress in 1941. Some believe Franklin Roosevelt cynically set the date for late November, hoping to encourage better Christmas sales despite the Great Depression. Whatever the reason, the tradition of Thanksgiving on the last Thursday of November is now part of the American fabric. But do we really need a congressionally mandated day to give thanks? No! If youre healthy, have a loving family, plenty of food to eat, a roof over your head and a job, then youve got things to be thankful for. If you are a person of faith, you know every day is a day to give thanks, because God is in your life. Being thankful is more than words; it is a mindset or a way of living call it a thankful lifestyle Buddha illustrated it this way: Let us rise up and be thankful, for if we didn't learn a lot today, at least we learned a little, and if we didn't learn a little, at least we didn't get sick, and if we got sick, at least we didn't die; so, let us all be thankful. Now thats a thankful mindset. ~ Chaps

Being Thankful
Chaplain Michael Tomlinson

As many of us indulged in a large dinner last month, we were celebrating the first of a series of occasions of reflection during Americas holiday season. There is an old saying, the victors write history. In the wake of the War Between the States (1861-1865), history took a decidedly northeastern flavor. This is best illustrated by Americas First Thanksgiving. Do you really know when and where the first Thanksgiving was held in what was to become the United States of America? (Hint: the Pilgrims werent there.) Many believe the first Thanksgiving in America was held by the Spanish in Texas thats right, Texas! The year was 1541, which was 79 years before the seasick Pilgrims left the Mayflower and set foot in the New World. Florida also lays claim to an early or the first Thanksgiving in Spanish Saint Augustine in 1565, which was 56 years before the one held in Plymouth.

November was busy for us, with many celebrations and various events that helped boost our Warriors morale. We celebrated the 236th Marine Corps Birthday with a traditional cake-cutting ceremony, Veterans Day, and a Thanksgiving with great food. In addition to accomplishing our mission, some Marines also participated in a Danish Contingent (Dancon) March. Participants marched 16.6 miles carrying a weighted pack. Everyone received a complimentary medal and a certificate of completion. Our Marines and Sailors have been keeping their holiday spirits up with Thanksgiving decorations. With the changing of the season, Christmas decorations are going up in all of our workspaces. Please visit our Facebook page (2nd Marine Logistics Group) to view the pictures of your Marines and Sailors during these festive events. I hope you had a great Thanksgiving and enjoyed your time in the company of family and friends. In December, there are many activities for the families back home to enjoy starting with the CLR- 27 Holiday party on Dec. 1. There is also a John/Jane Wayne Day, Backdoor Boutique, and an Armed Services YMCA Paint Day for the children, so please take advantage of these functions and contact the Family Readiness Officer (Mr. Padilla) for more information. Christmas is around the corner, so whether you are staying home or traveling, please remember to stay safe. The deadline for mailing packages that have a Christmas Day arrival time is Dec. 3. Remember that transit time for packages throughout the holiday season will be longer than usual. During November, several competitive boards were held, and our Sailors represented the company in outstanding fashion, as always. HM1 Barry Goode won the Senior Sailor of the Quarter (G-3), HM2 John Lowe won the Junior Sailor of

the Quarter (Embedded Partnering Team), and Hospitalman Vincent Bruno won Blue Jacket of the Quarter (CAS). All three of these Warriors won at both the Company and the Group Level. We also have new additions to the 2nd MLG family during November: Allison A. Farrand; daughter of LCpl Brian Farrand and Elisabeth Farrand (LS Det), born Nov. 5; Kevin A. Butler Jr., son of Sgt Kevin Butler and Renee R. Butler (Postal Det), born Nov. 18. Congratulations to these families, and we welcome our new baby devil pups to the family. Last but not least, thank you to our family and friends for their constant support and dedication to help ensure that our Marines and Sailors keep a high state of morale. Have a safe and Merry Christmas! Semper Fi! Jerry E. Lopez 1stSgt, USMC
