PREREQUISITES Completion of ESLL 30 with a C or better, or placement through assessment process. You must show proof of placement during the first week of class or be dropped from the course. COURSE DESCRIPTION This is a course to develop the listening and speaking skills needed to succeed in college courses. You will also practice stress, rhythm, and intonation of American English. TEXTBOOKS AND SUPPLIES Now Hear This!, second edition, by Barbara H. Foley. Pronunciation Plus: Practice Through Interaction, by Martin Hewings & Sharon Goldstein. A 60-minute audio cassette tape (new and good quality) with your name on it. Access to a good quality tape recorder. Optional: You can have copies made of the tapes for Now Hear This! and Pronunciation Plus in the Learning Resource Center (LRC). If you want copies, take eight 90-minute cassette tapes to the LRC (four tapes for each textbook). Ask them to make copies of tape #7.01, 7.02, 7.03, 7.04 (for Now Hear This) and tape #30.01, 30.02, 30.03, 30.04 (for Pronunciation Plus). Note: To get a ZipMail account, go to http://zip.arc.losrios.edu/ and click on Request a Zip account. COURSE ASSIGNMENTS AND LATE WORK You will have dictation/spelling and pronunciation tests, tape assignments, and homework. College students should expect up to 2 hours of homework for each hour of class (or 8 hours each week). Assignments must be turned in at the beginning of the class on the due date. I will only listen to tape assignments which are rewound to the beginning of the current assignment and begin with your name, date, and assignment number. If you are absent, you should have someone else bring me your assignment on time. I will not accept late work. No make-up quizzes or tests will be given unless I have given you permission before or on the day of the test or assignment. No make-ups for the midterm or final except in cases of extreme emergency. ATTENDANCE College students are expected to attend all sessions of their courses, arrive on time, and stay for the whole class. If you have more than three absences, you may be dropped from the class. If you are absent, call another student to find out what you missed. If

you are absent for more than one class, call me so that I know you havent dropped the class. If you arrive late, see me after class to have your absence changed to a tardy. If you stop attending the class, you are responsible for officially dropping the class. COURSE OBJECTIVES Upon completion of this course, students will be able to: Differentiate between sounds of American English. Identify stress, rhythm, and intonation patterns. Recognize the difference in mood and meaning created by applying stress, rhythm, and intonation correctly. Communicate through conversations and role-playing scenarios on a variety of topics. ACADEMIC HONESTY Cheating in any form is not acceptable. Any student caught cheating or helping another to cheat may receive a zero on that test or assignment. Cheating on the final exam may result in the student failing the course. How NOT to cheat: Do not use any notes on a test.
