Recently, I boarded a taxi at Taman Jaya 1,R.l' Station in Petaling .laya to get
home. It was a 10-minute ride. I am usually very courteous and friendl) with taxi
drivers, as I know they would have had a bad day fighting through trafiic. And 1
was my usual self with this driver.
I gavc him directions to my home but he was rather quiet and did not want to
speak. As we approached the road to my home I told him i t was another right turn
but he stopped suddenly and asked me to get o f f as he claimed i t was difficult to
rcverse which was not the case.

It is estimated that there are at least 250 rnillion child labourers worldwide.
Many o f 9 children have to work in harsh environments. Children who work
as domestic servants are subjected to physical or sexual abuse. They arc olien
deprived -10-social activity and schooling. Thcy arc poorly paid, or not paid at
all.
Children are also pledged by their parents to factory owners in _- l I- li)r
small loans or they are kidnapped to work in factories. Most are kept in - _ 12--,
tortured and made to work for twenty hours a day without a break. Some are cven
chained to their beds at night to - 1 3 t h e m from running away. 'There arc also
those who work for industries and plantations. 'They perform all kinds o f duties
throughout the day. Most o f them -14- in hazardous conditions, with no heallh
and safety regulations.
In the streets o f the developing world, children are -15p-polishing shoes,
hawking flowers and trinkets, or using other ingenious ways to makc money. For
some, it is the only way o f getting food; for others, it is just the beginning o f a
dreadful life.
