So, if you need a particular good or service for yourself, mom or dad, the kids, a niece or nephew or a good friend, it pays to find out if the good or service is available from a local merchant before driving down the hill or ordering online from a corporation thousands of miles away. Who wants to stand in line and throw elbows? Not me. Why Think Auburn First? First and foremost, Auburn merchants offer low prices and customized personal services. The small-town experience includes the ability to talk direct-

ly to business owners about the goods and services they offer. Secondly, when we purchase a good or service from an Auburn merchant, a portion of our dollars goes to support a wide array of public and community services. A percentage of the sales tax dollars allows our city to hire
professional police officers and firefighters. The money also flows to help fix potholes, pave our roads and keep the streetlights bright. And since Auburn merchants are major contributors to community activities, another portion of our dollars supports worthwhile activities such as the Festival of Lights Parade, the State Theatre, the Auburn Symphony, Little League teams, Seniors First and helping the poor with food and shelter. Check out the various websites that support our Auburn merchants at www.oldtownauburnca.com, www.downtownauburnca.com, www.auburnchamber.net and www.thinkauburnfirst.com. Auburns elves have been hard at work all year long, crafting high-quality items that are sure to please. Artists, welders, hairstylists and more offer an array of gift ideas that truly put an emphasis on shopping local. Here are just a few of the many items made and sold here.
Custom metalwork
Dan Tenold, owner of Wizards of Metal in Old Town Auburn, creates custom metal art using a plasma cutting system right in his studio. Throughout the year he does a lot of residential signs and commercial products, but as he shifts into his busy season he does more special orders for wall and yard art pieces. Its personalized, custom, Tenold said. They can get something that they cant buy anywhere else that is made especially for them. Tenold said popular gift items are welcome signs, animals and scenery. In addition to custom work, his walls are full of handcrafted items available for immediate purchase.

which is a deal considering the work that goes into them. It takes him several days, she said. The silk is dyed, then the pattern is applied to the silk using Indonesian tools made out of copper, and then the scarf is painted and dyed again. Some have only two layers, while more intricate scarves can have six or seven. The Nicholsons have been in Auburn for 30 years and hold holiday open houses each year. Their ornaments were part of the White House collection when Bill Clinton was in office, and one year they could be seen at the governors mansion in Sacramento. Theres a lot of people locally wholl just come out and get one every year, either for themselves or for their family, Janet Nicholson said. A popular selection features wine accessories, like glassblown wine-stoppers and metal wine holders. Fawnridge Winery displays Nicholson Blown Glass on its label, and Janet Nicholson said shes seen many people give a bottle of Fawnridge wine with a holder and stopper as gifts. We also do a whole range of vases and bowls, Janet Nicholson said. Those sell for $75 and up, and a selection of smaller items is made just for the holidays.
Batik accessories
Artists Meriddee and Keith Smith create textile works of art, and Meriddee Smith said a popular Christmas gift item is a batik scarf. Batik is an ancient art form that uses a manual wax-resist dyeing technique. Wax is applied to fabric, followed by dye, in many successive layers to create colorful, intricate designs. Meriddee Smith works in silk painting, felting and many other textiles, and her husband does batik work. Scarves generally sell for less than $100, she said,

Looking to give or receive something shiny and sparkly in a small box? Auburns jewelry stores have plenty of options. At Sierra Moon Goldsmiths, designers create one-of-a-kind pieces. We do a lot of custom jewelry, coowner John Lynch said. We have certain customers who like that aspect and theyll want something specially made. Theyll have a gemstone and well make the mounting or they will start from scratch with a stone in the store or well bring in something special-order. One of the trends in rings this year is a
combination of sterling silver and gold. Were also seeing a lot of small diamonds set into sterling silver and were seeing colored diamonds black or bronze green and blue, he said. These are irradiated. It is a neutral radiation they use. Basically it just copies what nature does. There are naturally colored diamonds and we do carry those as well. The irradiated ones are a little less expensive. Palladium pieces are also popular. It is a cousin of platinum, Lynch said. Its found along with platinum. Palladium is almost a pure metal so it wont present any allergy problems. It is a lot less expensive than platinum and has a lot of the same properties, so it is a nice alternative. For special order pieces, it takes two to four weeks for completion, depending

It may be cold and rainy now, but after winter comes spring, so nows a good time to think about that green-thumbed guy or gal on your gift list. For the gardener, we carry a good-quality two-piece pruning kit, or clippers that are perfect for deadheading, said Kim Wright, owner of Avant Garden in Downtown Auburn. Along with tools, gloves and small plants, her store offers a wide variety of decorative items, like solar mobiles and wind
chimes, birdhouses built by local artists, topiaries and ornamental gardens either premade or pick out the parts and build your own. The lavender-scented heat wraps are nice. You get the moist warmth as well as the soothing lavender smell. They come in booties too, which are popular for elderly people with poor circulation, Wright said. At Eisley Nursery on Nevada Street, you can choose from the traditional poinsettia plant to something a little more contemporary. Bean Pod soy candles dont give off the black smoke that other candles do, said sales associate Phoebe Freeman.

Our one-of-a-kind businesses give our town its distinctive character. Uniqueness promotes tourism, and a sense of community.
Re-Circulate More Money in the Local Community. A dollar spent in a locally-owned store is usually spent 6 to 15 times before it leaves the community. These dollars are used to make purchases from other local businesses, service providers, and farms. This continues to strengthen the economic base of the community. Help Fund Public Safety and Services Your sales tax dollars are used to retain
Save Money. A marketplace of hundreds of small businesses is the best way to ensure innovation and low prices. Shopping local also saves consumers money on fuel costs.
Groups. Non-profit organizations receive an average of three times more support from smaller locally-owned businesses than from large corporate enterprises.
Give Businesses Reasons to Locate in the Auburn Area. Research shows that entrepreneurs and skilled workers are more likely to settle in communities that preserve their one-of-akind businesses and distinctive character.
New Jobs. Small local businesses are the largest employer nationally and provide the most new jobs in the Sierra. Local businesses also create stable employment.
Locally-owned businesses make local purchases, requiring less transportation. Reusing and recycling items locally generate less waste and save money.
Encourage Local Investment. Local businesses are owned by community members who succeed through continued investment in their communitys future. More Choices. A multitude of small businesses, each selecting products based on the needs of local customers, guarantee a broader range of product choices.
Reduce Environmental Impact. Shopping in town centers reduces sprawl, congestion, habitat loss, and pollution.
Throughout Auburn, there are shops that can help one with the perfect selection of elegant or whimsical decorations, whatever you desire. According to design coordinator Gail Wangler from Hints of the Past, it is important to pick your color scheme maybe a red and white, or black and white or gold and silver to start with. Then you can add a theme to it like a snowman, or candy canes, deer and even Santa. After that, build your vignette or scene around it. Wangler sells her holiday decorations at M & Company in Old Town Auburn. There you can get ideas from various themes already set up throughout out the store while purchasing coordinating decorations and ribbons at the same time. When creating your kitchen, pick colors that you love and are attracted to, make it your passion, because its a room for creating great meals in, and those colors will inspire you in your cooking too, Wangler said. When transitioning into the living room, Wangler suggests putting more emphasis on that room by going bigger but staying traditional too. Usually its dressier than a kitchen, she said. Again, start with your theme colors and build on it, but you want it to be a bit more elegant and classy than the kitchen. Also, if you add strands of white lights to decorations or garland, it really brings them to life and they are inexpensive too. Using a ribbon with the same color schemes ties it all together. According to Wangler, a great

way to cut back on holiday decorating expenses is to cut and make your own fresh holiday tree garland for the fireplace and add ribbons and lights while keeping with your theme colors. When space is an issue, there are lots of options. M & Company offers pre-decorated slim trees that are great for breezeways. Across town at Dawns Company, they suggest using an artificial tree without attaching the limbs on the back of the tree, as displayed in their shop. We dont have a whole lot of room in our store, and so by not attaching the branches at the back of our faux tree, it creates more room because you can back it to a wall, and people dont really notice right away, said owner Susan Urban. An inexpensive alternative to a tree would be decorating manzanita branch and using ornaments and lights to add that holiday flair. Store employee Andie Simmons also suggests changing out the fruit bowl on your kitchen table with some blown-glass bulbs and garland for an affordable change. You can make simple changes to a home while keeping in a budget, Simon said. Dawns Company will host its annual Open House Dec. 3, with 25 percent off all Jim Shore figurines and Yankee Candles. Dawns Company offers printable coupons on its website too.
Whimsical knickknacks sold at M & Company in Old Town Auburn create the perfect theme for any holiday decorating.
Just when you think youre all done with your shopping for this holiday season, dont forget that one last family member on your list. You know who: that one member whos completely loyal to you, is always there and on occasion likes to have their belly rubbed. You might think were talking about the significant other in your life, but no, its your dog, or whatever other animal you have that resides in your home. According to a Bloomberg/Businessweek report, Americans spend nearly $41 billion annually on their pets, and the holiday season is a

already have, she said. If they want to, we can give them tradein value on old gold or platinum and that helps us with the cost. This years requests are ranging from traditional diamond earrings to really different oneof-a-kind pieces in colored stones, she said. Were also seeing a lot of sterling silver requests. season, much like last year, the point is to be able to give a gift you believe in and one that will be special and enduring. When people spend money, they want to spend it on something they know will be received well, if thats a sterling silver charm or the most elaborate diamond ring we have, or something in between, she said.

TICKETS: The gift of entertainment PETS: Outfit your pup with sports-themed accessories
continued from 18 family and business acquaintances, Wikoff said. Admission to the monthly showings is $8. The State Theatre is able to provide a gift-giver with a gift certificate that the recipient can redeem for Cinema at the State tickets, Wikoff said. The State Theatre also welcomes theater troupes to its 120-seat performance space, including the nonprofit Placer Community Theater. The group is set to launch an eight-show run of Neil Simons Rumors between Jan. 19 and Feb. 4. Philip Jacques, vice president of Placer Community Theater, said he likes the concept of locking in tickets early and giving a gift of a live performance. Take Note Troupe, another local outfit, will be at the State in February for a two-night run of an original production called Poetic License.
With both those productions, tickets are available through the troupe websites placercommunitytheater.org and takenotetroupe.org. The wonders of nature and science are stage center at the State Theatre most months at the Placer Nature Centers highly popular 1st Friday Lecture Series. Upcoming lectures include talks titled Addicted to Energy, Exploring Electricity and Magnetism and A Crowded Planet. Megan Krekorian, the Placer Nature Centers new executive director, said single tickets, four packs and season passes are available. Theyre available at placernaturecenter.org/lectures. Giving a packet of tickets is offering someone what we call brain food, Krekorian said. Instead of a gift basket of food, they will be giving a gift pack of knowledge on hot topics both globally and locally.
