Sublinhe as Palavras Cognatas no texto abaixo: Modem A modem is a device that converts one form of communication signal into another. It is used as a link between devices that use different forms of signals, such as a computer or a telephone. The word modem derives from this use. That is, conversion from the digital signals of computers to the analog signals of telephones is called modulation, while the reverse process is called demodulation. Modems can also carry out various control functions for coordinating the transmitted data. Digital data from a computer, in the form of a sequence of bits, is fed to a modem. The modem converts the bits into an analog signal that preserves the distinction between the low and high bits. For example, the bits may be converted into two frequencies. At the receiving end, another modem detects the two frequencies and produces a digital signal that is identical to the original digital signal. In this way, data can be transmitted at the rate of several thousand bits per second over ordinary telephone lines and at even higher rates over shielded lines. If the terminal and the computer can send data to each other, the modems are operating in what is referred to as full duplex mode. If only one of them can send data at any given time, the mode is then called half duplex.

A DAY AT WORK
In the morning I attended a meeting between the management and union representatives. The discussion was very comprehensive, covering topics like working hours, days off, retirement age and so on. Both sides were interested in an agreement and ready to compromise. The secretary recorded everything in the notes. Eventually, they decided to set a new meeting to sign the final draft of the agreement. Back at the office, a colleague of mine asked me if I had realized that the proposed agreement would be partially against the company policy not to accept workers that have already retired. I pretended to be really busy and late for an appointment and left for the cafeteria. Actually, I didnt want to discuss the matter at the particular moment because there were some strangers in the office. After lunch I attended a lecture given by the mayor, who is an expert tax legislation and has a graduate degree in political science. He said his government intends to assist welfare programs and senior citizens, raise funds to improve college education and build a public library because this is what the people expect from the government.
