The Future Professional Me

Believe it or not most adults have two sides to their lives, two distinctly different aspects of life that dictate how one lives their life. The two aspects are the personal lifestyle, and the professional lifestyle. The later being the stricter in most cases. The description of a professional lifestyle of a person varies depending on the person and their current profession. For me it began when I was young, specifically when I started to think of what I wanted to do with my life. Currently I want to become a chief executive officer (CEO) of my own business, because I realized at a young age that I enjoy leading teams and having the last deciding decision on important matters. I also enjoy achieving tasks and accomplishing challenges; that sense of accomplishment allows me to continue to strive to be better at whatever it is that I do. I also want to be able to dictate what I do within the workplace, and not have a consistent, neutral and boring work routine. From the information that I had found on the industry that I plan to pursue, the culture of this industry is extremely professional. The CEO lifestyle and professional presence is one of strict ordinance, I had taken it upon myself to investigate numerous CEOs of businesses and each of the individuals that I had researched had very little if any information about their personal lives available. The information that was available was a public press released announcements or events, that showed the CEO in only a positive light. The professionalism in their public image is highly monitored, because they are the face behind major multi-million dollar businesses. A CEO cannot risk having their public image becoming tarnished, their image has a direct link to how well the company does with its customers which if it has a negative effect can lose the company a vast amount of money. Due to this amount of composure and private nature of the job, many employers in this profession are looking for people who honor the divide between that personal side of ones life and the professional side of ones life. Other valuable assets that someone should possess if wanting to pursue a career in this field are: confidence, leadership, problem-solving, management, organizational and team working skills. A combination of these factors will allow someone to be a valuable asset in the managerial aspect of any company. After roaming through LinkedIn and scrolling through about five or six CEO profiles, I realized that I have a lot of work in front of me. Most of the individuals I viewed had a lot of work experience and knowledge about managing both small businesses and large corporations. Many of them were founders as well, so they began their own business from the ground up which just speaks leagues about the type of person they are. The profiles in correspondence with the job descriptions made it clear that there is a certain mold of people that need to fit into this job industry. A common soft skill that I realized was leadership; this was obvious because in order to manage materials or people one needs to be able to lead the group around him to accomplish a task. A less common soft skill that sort of surprised me was that of being analytical, after further consideration it began to make sense but originally I couldnt make the

connection between a manger and analyzing. However, now it is clear that a manager needs to be able to analyze problems and create solutions. They must be able to analyze numbers in order to judge performance of both workers and production. So in actuality the two are more connected than originally foreseen. In order to determine if someone is qualified to enter into the ranks of a CEO position within a corporation, one should have to go through several levels of assessment and declaration of ability before they should be adorned with the opportunity to manage a company or lead a group of people. However, for the sake of brevity there are five criteria one should follow in order to show their qualifications. Someone that is currently performing the job should be able to demonstrate their knowledge of the position and what it entails, which is the first criteria; stating the job purpose and role within the company. If one is not able to give a general description about their contribution to the company then they really dont apply much to the job. The second criteria is what is their experience and knowledge of expertise, what type of work has the person done in the past and from the past experience how do they plan on using the knowledge they gained. The third criteria would be their ability to innovate and adapt to change, if the person can prove that they can still be innovative in an ever changing industry they would be able to prove that they can sustain their position in the industry and maybe even grow within the industry. The ability to adapt to challenges that may arise will be another valuable asset in allowing the company that the person works for will be more successful in the long run. The fourth criterion is interpersonal skills a manager must be able to communicate effectively with his workers, if there is no communication between the hierarchy the purpose and overall mission of the company gets lost which can only lead to bad events. Finally, the fifth criterion is never to become satisfied. After reading over the several profiles on LinkedIn, it was easy to realize that these people were addicted to success and never settled, they only continued to make strides in their industries and always wanted to be better and greater at what they did. That constant hunger for power and success is a crucial key to being successful within this field. However, the other four are just as important and a blend of the five is what is really needed in becoming successful within this industry.

Me Currently

The practice of reviewing older material on ones self has always been a strange experience for me. I begin to reminisce and think about how I got to the position I am in today. Currently the presence that I have on the web is much of what I have done in the past, which my sport history. The first being my LinkedIn account which is the most up to date and recent information that is available to the public eye on the internet. There is also my MySpace page as well, which I havent been on in so many years but cant seem to find a way to delete it. Finally there are numerous pages of my stats during my high school sport seasons. In terms of every criteria and how well I meet them, varies depending on the criterion. The first criteria of knowing what the job entails is all based on the research that I have done and the knowledge that I have gained from my classes. This is extremely different from what can be learned from handson experience that people have that are actually doing the job. Hands-on real experience will always outweigh theory any day. The second criteria is extremely hard for me because I dont have much real life experience, I have only had one internship so far and that is not enough information or experience to launch me into the position that I want to be in currently. The third criteria is the one that I have most experience in at the moment, being a part of Arizona state universitys Changmaker Central allows me to express both my innovative side and entrepreneurial side on a daily basis. This allows me to be both innovative and adaptable in both my professional and personal life. The fourth criteria asks for me to be an effective communicator which means being able to relate to many people in various situations, my job at the career preparation center on campus allows me to work on these skills. We get many students coming in everyday from all parts of the globe, where they be from across the nation or across the world I have to be able to communicate how our resources will benefit them in their professional careers. Finally the fifth criteria has to be next after being able to innovate and adapt, my drive to never be satisfied has allowed me to gain a position within the undergraduate student government. It has allowed me to get into college and has made me want to purpose a career that allows me to never stop accomplishing my goals and to always have new challenges to face and overcome.

Bridging the gap

The reason the human race has been able to survive for so long is because as a race they have been able to adapt and change to the various threats that oppose it. That strength of adapting to various situations is also my greatest strength; I have had several occurrences take place when the original plan had fallen through. If it had not been for my ability to think on my feet and come up with a new plan, the event may have fallen through, and had left many people unhappy. I plan on continuing to build on this strength by just keeping an open mind when planning events; I will expect the unexpected and always be willing for a plan b. I will also try to expand my thought process in order to prepare for challenges more thoroughly. Secondly, I am able to lead a group of individuals, currently I am on a committee within the undergraduate student government. Due to that position I am able to manage a group of senators in the promotion of the USG name and activities. The hands- on experience will allow me to continue to gain leadership skills as well as team working skills which is another highly sought after skill from employers. A weakness that I currently have is biting off more than I can chew. Currently I am involved in two organizations, in which I hold a leadership position in both, I work full time as well as taking full time credit hours as well as being a member of the ASU rugby team. Being this involved leaves me stretched out at times and causes me to lose sleep at times. I am working on this by realizing what is most important to me and prioritizing what I really want to be a part of, because of this process I have been able to take on less tasks and feel less stressed out. Another weakness that I possess at times is that I lack organizational skills. At times I allow things to get jumbled and mixed up due to me not keeping tabs on everything. Currently to avoid this I am writing down what I have to do and how long I have to complete it, prioritizing also comes into account here as well. By prioritizing what needs to be done first I dont mix things up and lose track of when they need to be completed. Working on changing my weaknesses and constantly improving my strengths will allow me to be in a better position to be a more qualified candidate for any CEO position. Now that I see how important a professional presence is and how it can alter the perception of you for a job , I will take into account much more heavily because I would not want my past to come back and haunt me by hindering my ability to obtain a job.
