graphic design and future gazing
What are you looking forward to about the future? I am a person who embraces change and looks forward to the future with excitement. Sometimes, however, it gets difficult to maintain that position, but generally I remain optimistic. I think we are about to enter a period of social change. We are seeing a huge reaction against the decades of greed and acquisition, It will be painful for us all, but out of it will come good. What do you fear about the future? I think the role of advanced technology will both be human kinds greatest asset and its greatest threat. We will soon reach a point where our dependency on technology is total - there are many good things about this, but there will also be a time, when machines become smarter than us and they take over. I dont think this is fantasy. I see it happening already. Think about the way people use smart phones. Could they go back to a time before? Dont think so. Where do you think youll be getting your news from in 50 years time? I usually think speculating about the future is a waste of time. The future is never what we think it will be. The only thing I know is that our news will come through the agency of advanced technology - but whether it will be a chip implanted in our brains, or a screen inside our glasses, or some other undreamt of method, who can say? Where do you see Graphic Design in 50 years time? I think we are already in the post graphic design era. Social networks, and template-ed websites, smart, easy-to-use software, etc., means that the role of the graphic designer is already changing. Over the next 10-years, graphic designers will have to reinvent themselves. I see graphic design becoming a tool or a skill that everyone possess - a bit like the ability to drive a car. What do you think is happening now that will affect the future? See all of the above.
What are you looking forward to about the future? Besides hoverboards, Im really looking forward to hydrogen fuel cell cars. I think it will be a massive step to relinquish ourselves with an over-dependancy on fossil fuels. TD (True definition) to replace HD. Smart houses. 4G (and probably 5, 6, 7, 8G). Looking forward to seeing how computer games will evolve over the next 50 years. The last 30 years has seen it evolve from Pong to Call of Duty. What do you fear about the future? A Terminator/Skynet-esque catastrophe. In the design world, the death of print. Although if print becomes limited to special occasions, then perhaps it will be more precious and cared-for, compared to the endless tripe you see in-between the Sunday papers. Where do you think youll be getting your news from in 50 years time? Everywhere. Where do you see Graphic Design in 50 years time? I think graphic design will be similar to how it is now in many ways. The ways of communicating will no doubt evolve and many people are predicting the death of print. Designers will have to become more ambidextrous with cross-media solutions. This will either mean learning new skills, or becoming stronger at collaborating and art-directing. Our role is communication, and with the ways of communicating growing daily, designers will play a huge part in the future. What do you think is happening now that will affect the future? Communication integration. We are all becoming synced up with our digital information. The advent of Cloud means youll be able to access all your data wherever you are in the world, from a device that can call, text, email, video chat, browse the web... etc.
Listening to our clients and understanding their needs is how we find ways to solve their problems.

What are you looking forward to about the future? The future of retailing is more and more challenging, and that makes it interesting and often opens up new and exciting business possibilities. Currently the global Economic outlook makes predicting the future difficult but the more certain challenges will certainly be the way people shop and when. Online retailing has grown significantly in the last few years and will continue to gain a larger customer share. Harvey Nichols is investing in online technology to enable us to compete in this market place alongside our traditional retail business. What do you fear about the future? Fear is a strong word and retail certainly means you have to develop and grow as a business, fear prevents this process and often leads to a lack of innovation or risk taking. Of course the economic outlook at present makes us more cautious however it can also create possibilities like better deals on property which can benefit us for future growth Where do you see your area of buisness in 50 years time? There will be big changes no doubt in the way our business runs in 50 years time however fundamentally customer service is at the heart of what we do and that I am certain will remain, humans function on social contact and that has endured in history and I am certain that is one thing that will not change, it may be that online shopping merges with the social networking element of the web or that we become very sophisticated at personalising services for each customer thanks to CRM but I am convinced that those retailers who retain excellent service levels will be the ones that survive long term. Harvey Nichols is 200 years old next year, heres to the next 50. What do you think is happening now that will affect the future? Of course the economic crisis and the explosion of new consumer markets like China, India and Brazil. This will mean most businesses will need to be global to survive long term and be able to be the best at what they do. With more competition competing on price will cease to be the only reason customers choose a retailer, for the long term companies must offer a significant USP to grow and maintain their sales.

2062 PRINT TECHNOLOGIES
2012
Newspapers, books, magazines, publications, posters still very popular and in high demand.
2022
Newspapers decline slightly and are more online/ tablet based. Other print media stays consistent.
All packagings become recyclable. Excess packagings are removed as the functionability becomes the centre of attention.
3D PRINTERS
These printers already exists, they create 3D scale models, which can include real mechanical parts. There are only a few available now and at a cost. Will the future mean everyone has one of these costly printers in their home?
2032
Less variety of newspapers, smaller local newspapers cut down and go digital. Larger national & international newspapers stay in business, although still increasing their online & digital presence to keep up with the times. Slight decline in poster design, advertising becomes increasingly digital.
I think the book design might not change that much, as people still using eBook. But they might have something to make it more comfortable. Also people will buy book from the internet and download them into their phone or ebook.
Brands become more simplistic, reducing design elements resulting in minimalist identities that use less printing ink and are more distinguished
INKLESS PRINTERS
Polaroid has already done this, but they are now creating printers that use Zink zero ink technology. Using special photo paper the heat from the printer activates the ink crystals embedded within the paper that create full colour prints in less than a minute does this.
2042
Publications decrease commercially, although kept on strong by the art & design community. Newspapers industry move towards the idea of a monopoly, with 3-5 large companies running the printed media worldwide. However, a large quantity of news exist in different digital forms. Printed publications are almost out of circulation. Printed books have shown slight decline, with some bookshops still in business.
Book design will adapt to digital media and become more powerful and dynamic
FOOD PRINTERS
A printer like this already exists, where it can print proteins, which are edible. Maybe on day they will be printing a threecourse meal.
2052
Printed books decline more, newspapers using the same monopoly system successfully. Publications and magazines have become incredibly rare to buy. They have become a niche and more expensive.
In 2052 I think most of book design would be more like digital which you can flick it to another pages by just using your finger and also it might have a moving images or 3D images in the book as well
Intelligent packaging communicates real time information between product, cosumer and provider via computer or smartphone using eCoupled technology
print design
PRINTERS ON THE GO
Small Portable Printers We have smart phones and tablets which enable us to socialize, browse the net, store all our books, voice commands, MP3 and face calling will there ever be a printing function added to our phones and tablets that enables us to print on the go.
2062
Printed newspaper ran collectively by 1 or 2 companies. Books are outnumbered by eBooks 3 to 1. All posters are digital, 3D printing has taken over. Online news is the leading source of news feeds to the world, through advanced technology and technologically tailored to every persons careers and interests. The magazine is in museums, books are priced at 5 times their amount in 2012, paper stock is unbelievably vast- trees need to be conserved for human survival.
I dont think from 2052 to 2062, the book design will change much. But surely it would looks better and trader.
Packaging surfaces become interactive and motion based, providing information whilst resposive to its surroundings

Exploration of expressive/postmodern typography. The new typography is still limited to only book typography, but it was a substantial step forward that could be satisfactory in practice as well as in theory.
Currently still using the same typefaces from 50 years ago, but, Georgia Pro and Verdana Pro are being developed two new versions of older typefaces suitable for new devices such as the iPad and Amazon Kindle. EXPERIENCE
2022
Social networking will become more pervasive as the digital and physical worlds become more connected than ever. We can already see mobile technology developing rapidly through tablets and smart phones which will begin to allow real time social networking to occur.
The internet as the main medium, using a variety of free applications such as icloud and Spotify, where the user can centralise information and data ranging from films, music, banking and personal information. Some applications holding information are accessed through logging onto your own personal account. Others can integrate applications so that the content is accessible on all devices.
As hard as it seems to believe now Facebook will gradually slip from the top spot as the industry leader in social media as we see more segmented niche networks and apps that allow individuals to share particular elements of their lives with specific others.
All social media and information will be only available digitally With news papers becoming obsolete. It will be very difficult to buy CDs and DVDs with almost all information being available online only through specific subscribed websites or by purchasing online from different online stores.
2032
The content that we are exposed to will become more customised and targeted to our personal wants and needs. Companies with large sums of money such as Facebook & Google have been collecting data for years and by now have found a way to integrate this fully into social media. All contents would be fully attainable through social networking, removing the hassle of searching for information on third party sites. Human / physical relationships will become less important as we begin to network with others around the world in a more engaging way. We are finally beginning to capitalise on the full potential of the internet in both a professional and personal manner.
Devices will become more advance at scanning barcodes in order to give us information on items. The idea of having a number of different websites and applications in order to hold our information such as banking, music and files will becoming less and less, with the notion of having all information easily accessible, in one place, taking over.
2042
All personal information will be able to be accessed digitally from one place., which is easily accessible where ever you are. Devices will be interactive with your surroundings, giving you real time information and content on things its scans for example food or a map. Content can be easily and quickly shared between people through effortless technology such as scanning over another device.
2052
user experience
We will no longer be passive media consumers but instead will interact with media in a much more dynamic way on all platforms and mediums. Just as many online games begin to achieve, we will become part of a virtual world unbeknown to us yet, where we will interact as avatars in the game of life.
The notion of the logging into an account or using a device will be lost and he idea of a seemless life will be in place - whereby you live inside the web and interact with it at all times, using a device to enable interaction with others and to scan items/object/people in order to give you all the information you could need on that item.
2062
Social networking will fully function along side reality. What we are doing, where we are going and who we are with will be updated and shared online in real time as it occurs in the physical world. There will be no need for log-ins removing the issue of privacy as social media will be personally & immediately available to you through multiple mediums at all times. All information will be accessed it being part of everyday life, through one central hub which you own, containing every single piece of information you could need. No devices will be used, information will be gathered through thought process and voice activation, projected directly onto the retina. Information can also be gathered by simply looking at a object/building/person. Interaction with others through projected touch screens and thought process.

The size and pricing of smart-phones will become rapidly reduced, and will become essential for everyone, continuing the increasing recent popularity and wide range of app devices. App prices and availability - not to mention competition between manufacturers, will result in the App becoming cheaper.
TECHNOLOGIES IN USE: 3D Films, Nintendo DS3, Xbox Kinect, Interactive Motion, 3D Projection Mapping, 3D without 3D glasses, Interactive Billboards, Interactive Posters, Interactive 3D projections
2022
Some manufacturers will leave the market meaning there are only the leading manufacturers such as Apple and microsoft.
Most window displays and walls inside shops will have interactive screens, and screens will dominate out cities. TECHNOLOGIES IN USE: 3D Projections / Holograms, 4D Movies will be the norm. (3D movies with extra experiences like smell and feel), All small posters, e.g, in tube trains, will be moving images.
2032
The app will be free more sophisticated, and available towhat ever portable device hardware that the user requires. Smaller pocket phone devices or more sophisticated for home use on computers.
Advertising will use 3D interactive projections / holograms outside shops. Images which were on vehicles i.e. Busses will now be moving images. Food packaging will have moving images.
2042
An app that is individually chosen will not exist on networks. In its place will be voice and the start of mood controlled devices where you get your headset or other hardware programmed to automatically be tailored to your makeup.
Films no longer will be on screens but will be projected into theatres where you will be able to walk around to experience at all angles. Because of E Ink, Newspapers and magazines will have moving images in them. You will only need one copy as it will wirelessly update itself when a new edition is out.

The personal computer will be tailored to each individuals mindset, it will still be a physical object, pocketsized or slightly larger for home, and will contain all of what each person needs in day to day life, details, work. Work will begin to become tailored to peoples lives and going to work will be done from home or anywhere so the idea of business will alter completely.
TV and Films will be able to be projected into the living room for the family to experience. Gaming we be experienced physically in the room instead of a screen.

By 2062 the average home computer will be able to out think the entire human race. Human augmentation will be common; increasing mental, perceptive, and physical aspects aswell as allowing us to access the net through our minds alone. As the essentials of living are increasingly automated people will be more involved with leisure, creativity, sports and sciences all of which require a more human touch. There will also be elements of humanity who will tend more to violence and self-gratification.
