Note: Each question carries 10 Marks. Answer all the questions. Q.1 Explain the functions of recruiting and staffing in retail management. [10 marks] Recruitment and Staffing Recruitment and staffing are crucial factors which define success of any organization. For details you should go through the sections below: 1.4.1 Recruitment The term recruitment comprises of process of attracting, screening, and selecting qualified people for a job at an organization or firm. Look at Figure 1.2 for understanding the recruitment process in general adopted by organizations.

Figure 1.2: Recruitment Process Read below for the details of various steps: The first step in the recruitment process is Job Analysis. It focuses on the requirement of the job to be performed. It also consists of job description which is collection of tasks to be performed for a particular job. It consist of process for getting applications by the eligible candidates by different medias such as the Internet, general newspapers, job ad newspapers, professional publications, window advertisements, job centers and campus graduate recruitment programs. Employee selection is the process comprised of collecting and evaluating information about an individual in order to extend an offer of employment. It is part of the overall staffing process of the organization, which also includes Human Resource (HR) planning, recruitment and retention activities.

On boarding is the process of helping new employees to get to know the working culture of the organization and also the requirements of the job so as to become productive members of an organization. The concept behind employee On boarding is best defined as a systematic and comprehensive approach to orienting a new employee to help them get "on board." There are two high-level goals of the On boarding process: 1. To make new employees feel welcome and comfortable in their new surroundings. 2. To minimize the time before new employees are productive members of their new workgroup. 1.4.2 Staffing Staffing is the process of acquiring, deploying, and retaining a workforce of sufficient quantity and quality to create positive impacts on the organizations effectiveness. Figure 1.3 will help you to understand the staffing process.

Figure 1.3: Staffing Process Now study the various steps in the staffing process which are explained below: 1. Planning work force requirements is the first step in staffing process which involves forecasting and determining the future manpower needs of the organization and thus planning about the number of employees required in any organization. 2. In recruitment organizations invites and solicits applications made to the desirable candidates. 3. In selection, screening of applications is done and suitable candidates are appointed as per the requirements. 4. Orientation and Placement: Orientation involves induction of employees so that they come to know the working culture of the organization.

5. Training and Development: Employees recruited may have many skills but which is required out of them in the concerned organization is important. 6. Remuneration: It is a kind of compensation provided monetarily to the employees for the job they performed. This is given according to the nature of job-skilled or unskilled, physical or mental, etc. Remuneration forms an important monetary incentive for the employees. 7. Performance Evaluation: In this expected results are compared with actual results 8. Promotion and Transfer: Based on the previous step, the decision of promotion and evaluation of the employee is taken up.
