ETHERNET NETWORKS
The Adapters Ethernet network adapters usually come in PCI ,USB, and PC Card (for laptops) versions dont bother with an ISA Ethernet card unless you have no more PCI slots. PCI adapters are VERY fast and inexpensive but require you to open your computer. USB to Ethernet adapters plug into an USB port on your computer so setup is a snap. USB to Ethernet adapters are limited by the speed of the USB port (12Mbps) so dont expect 100Mbps speeds! The Connections Connections between computers are made with Ethernet cables. These cables have ends on them called RJ-45 connectors. When selecting Ethernet cables, be sure to get good quality cable. The quality of the cable can be determined by the CAT rating. CAT5, CAT5e or CAT6 cable is good. The most common is CAT5. Make sure you do not purchase bulk Ethernet cable unless you have special tools to put the RJ45 ends on yourself. Star Topology When more than 2 computers need to be connected, an Ethernet HUB or Ethernet SWITCH is needed. Hubs and switches are special boxes where all your cables get connected.

Cross cable Topology If you only need 2 computers connected to each other, a hub is not necessary. Instead, a special Ethernet cable called a crossover cable is used.

Plug and Socket Wiring Details

Crossover Cable - For connecting TWO (and only two) computers together. If possible use a different
coloured cable, or mark it very clearly. If someone picks up your 'crossover' cable later and tries to use it as a conventional network cable, it won't work! Generally crossover cables are RED.

EXPERIMENT-1 NETWORKING TWO COMPUTERS USING STRAIGHT CABLE

Aim: To perform LAN using Star topology.

PROCEDURE:1. Insert networking cards in motherboards slots in two computer systems. 2. Connect one end of UTP cables to network card (NIC) of each computers. 3. Connect other ends of UTP cables to 8 ports HUB. 4. Connect DC power supply adapter to HUB. 5. Switch ON adapter to AC mains 230 V. 6. Share and map computers as per software installation .

EXPERIMENT-2 NETWORKING TWO COMPUTERS USING CROSS CABLE

AIM: To connect two computers (Zero Slot Networking) using cross over UTP CAT5 cable PROCEDURE: 1. Insert networking cards in motherboards slots in two computer systems. 2. Connect one end of UTP cross cable to network card (NIC) of each computers. 3. Share and map computers as per software installation

SOFTWARE INSTALLATION AND CONFIGURATION Configuring Windows 95, 98, 98SE, ME Everything we do on this page will take place in your network properties. This is where we will tell windows how to communicate with your new network. The easiest way to get to your network properties is to go to your desktop, right click on network neighborhood and click properties.

Windows 98 Users: A standard install of Windows 98 should be updated to service pack 1 to ensure proper networking operation. Go to THIS site and scroll down to the Recommended Updates area. Download the 'System Update' and install it on all your Windows 98 computers. The following four items should appear in your network properties. If you have a modem, you will see more. 1) Client for Microsoft Windows 2) Network Adapter Driver 3) NETBEUI 4) File and Printer sharing for Microsoft Windows

PROTOCOLS. A protocol is a standard set of rules, embodied in software and hardware, which determine how computers communicate with each other across networks. The protocols we will be concerned with are: TCP/IP or Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol are the protocols used on the Internet and may be used on a LAN to share an Internet connection and for other purposes, such as to communicate with LAN-based web server. IPX/SPX is the protocol used on Novell networks. You may need it for some programs, most notably, in the case of a 2-PC network, to run some multi-PC games. NetBEUI ("net buoy"), or NetBIOS Extended User Interface, is a fast, efficient protocol used primarily in smaller LANs. This is one of the easiest protocols to install and configure and the one we will use if the other two protocols are not required for the LAN. In a 2-PC network we would use TCP/IP for the dial-up adapter and the Internet and NetBEUI for the network adapter and the LAN. If we were to use TCP/IP for the LAN, it would not work as well and would require additional and more complex steps to configure.

If you do not have these components, use the add button to add them. NETBEUI is found in the PROTOCOL component type and the Client for Microsoft networks and file/print sharing are both found in the services area

Enable File and Printer Sharing Button From the configuration tab of your network properties, click the File and Print Sharing button under the "Primary Network Login Area. Make sure that both the files and printers checkboxes are both checked. If they are not checked, you will be unable to share files and printers. Identification Tab Give your computer a unique computer name and a workgroup name. Each computer on your network should have a unique computer name and the SAME workgroup name. Keep the workgroup name simple to avoid typos. Example: MYNETWORK. The network name is not case sensitive so MyNetwork is the same as mynetwork and the same as MYNETWORK

Access Control Tab Select Share level access control. User level control needs more administration. It can be enabled at a later time if you need to. For now, lets keep it simple. Now, back to the Configuration tab of the Network Properties dialog box Client for Microsoft networks Select Client for Microsoft networks from the configuration tab and then click properties. Make sure you are NOT logging into a windows NT domain and click OK (the check box should be unchecked). A windows domain requires of of your computers to be running a Windows SERVER to control all the login information on the network - That's not what we are looking for. Network Adapter Properties From the configuration tab of 'Network Properties' , select your network adapter driver, and click properties. Select the bindings tab and ensure that NetBEUI is checked.

NetBEUI Properties Bindings Tab : Ensure both Client for Microsoft Windows and File and printer sharing for Microsof Networks are checked.

Click OK to finish! (computer will reboot) Enabling shares on Windows 95/98/ME To get network neighborhood (network browser) working, you MUST enable at least one file or printer share on your computers. Create a new folder on your hard drive and call it shared. Right click on this folder and select Sharing from the menu that appears. Select Shared as and give the share a name or leave it as it is. Select Full as the access type. You can set a password for this share if you wish. Repeat this process for any folders or drives you wish to share. 8

Setting up a Win9x Peer to Peer Network

Hardware You Will Need

1. 2. At least two computers Network adapters for each computer. The cost should be approximately $20-$50. If you have a 10Base-T adapters, and only two computers, you can directly connect one computer to the other. You will need to modify the cable by connecting connect pins: 1--3, 2--6, 3-1, 6--2, pins 4,5,7 and 8 are unused, but are normally connected straight through. A good site with several diagrams of crossover cable can be found at http://www.johnscloset.net/wiring/crossover.html If you have more than two computers, you will need a 10BaseT hub or router to connect them. The cost will be approximately $50-$100.
