A Classic of its Genre: Shes The Man

Going to the movies has been a classic thing to dopastime since the theatre came into existence. Whether its family movie night, date night, or a night out with the girls; movies are one of the number one ways we keep ourselves entertained. They come in all sorts of genres:; from horror to drama to musicals to romance. One of my personalA favorite movie genres is comedy. I enjoy because watching an entertaining movie and being able to laugh a little bit to eases the viewers my mind. Comedies typically createstimulate in an upbeat mood; making someone feel better coming out than they might have going in. A class of the genre is My all time favorite the comedy movie Sis Shes The Man; a romantic comedy about a girls determination to make the rivalry schools boys soccer team. The main character is a girl named Viola Hastings, played by Amanda Bynes, who pretends to be her twin brother so that she can make the boys soccer team and prove to her friends and opposing soccer coach that girls can be just as good as boys. Along the way, she falls madly in love with her roommate. The only problem is; he thinks shes a guy. This movie is full of drama, love, lust, and a little bit of action. Oechslin 2 The genre of this movie is comedy and for people that have seen it they know immediately why. It is incredibly funny and witty. The basic characteristics of A a comedy film should be funny, entertaining, happy, and upbeat. Shes The Man has all of these things. Part of the reason the movie follows the genre so well has to do with the main characters. Amanda Bynes is a phenomenal actress and comedian. Every show or movie she has been inI have ever seen her in, she always plays her roles very well. In this movie her skills in acting stand out more than ever through her smart comebacks and hilarious jokes. She makes you feel like you are laughing with her and you are actually there with her as well. The lead male role is named Duke Garcia, played by Channing Tatum, shows off hism comedican ability material prettyin a slightly different way well in this particular movie.. Its almost like hes funny, even though hes not trying to be. Immediately, this movie reminds one of the guy we all know with the of my brother because he always exemplifies dry humor who and never fails to make everyone laugh. And the best part of that guy is, he doesnt even realize how funny he really is.. Which are what comedies should do; they should make you smile One of the best things about this film is the fact that it appeals to all audiences. It isnt some chick flick that guys will yawn over if they are dragged to see it by their demanding girlfriends. It also isnt some action packed movie reeking of testosterone where guys go to get OUT of a night with their wife or girlfriend. Its family friendly and even will make adults laugh. It has so many different types of humor that it will leave everyone smiling and laughing. Movies like this are the best kind of movie by far because they share common ground with all types--. uUnless of course you are the one in a million person who you hates comedies and doesntnt enjoy being happy., well then you are one in a million.
Comment [BC8]: Rather than including empty sentences such as these, spend your time talking about the points you bring up in your paragraphs, such as proving how the humor translates to the audience, using concrete examples from the text. Oechslin 3 The overall purpose of most movies is to teach a lesson to the audience. Shes the Mans purpose is to show that we were all created equally. Regardless of whether you are a girl or a boy, if you are fat or skinny, tall or short, everyone can achieve whatever they want to achieve if they set their re mind to their goals. Shes the Man shows its purpose throughout its whole story plot. It starts out with Violas girls soccer team getting cut and her feeling like theres nothing she can do. She then gets this brilliant idea to imitate her twin brother to get the opportunity to play her favorite sport and to prove a powerful point. Thats when the purpose is really conveyed. In the end her secret is revealedlieved, and regardless of her gender, Violashe is accepted and placed on the soccer team. She broke the boundary created bmy gender segregation, and bound the sport to the idea ofwith equality forto both males and females. The movieIt emphasizesgoes to show that you can be anybody you want to be if you just believe. For example during the final soccer game, Duke is trying to pump up his team and is deciding if Viola can play the game or not. He says: Be not afraid of greatness, some are born great, some achieve greatness, and some have greatness thrust upon them. I think our best chance to be great here today, is to have you play. He decides to let her play and they end up winning the game with a girl playing on their team. This quote shows an example of how regardless of gender; they play as a team and end up winning. All it takes is dedication, and the ability to break away from the status quo to achieve a desirable outcome. With all of that being said, the movie makes use of incorporates the genre in order to serve its and purpose very well. Throughout the whole movie, you see different forms of gender discrimination and how girls are treated as thoughlike they cant do anything as well as the boys. The movie keeps the audience hooked; itthey starts out with an interesting

Oechslin 4 beginning where you assume that everything is going to go the way it is supposed to. Then things get go in an unexpected direction really weird when Viola decides she is going to be a boy. This change in expectations is what makes the movie so funny, though and is what makes the movie appeal to the audience. There arent a lot of movies that have women pretending to be the opposite sex; it is unique, which helps with the moviesits main purpose, which is to entertain the audience. Throughout the movie there are so many memorable quotes and things that make you laugh veryso hard you think you are going to pee your pants. These quirky jokes and comments help excite the audience and make them want to watch it again to get that same effect. One hilarious scene truly plays with some of the taboos between males and females. Viola has brought some tampons to soccer practice and her male teammates see them when they fall out of her boots. They are immediately suspicious and question her about this. She covers by pretending the tampons are excellent solutions for nosebleeds, and proceeds to stick a tampon up her nose. So shes playing a boy, who still is a girl, and who has to explain girl things to boys in a way that will be acceptable in the male world. This sort of turning around of expectations and breaking of rules and boundaries helps boost the genre of the film as well as its purpose. Another movie that could be related to this in the context of genre is White Chicks. The similarity is the fact that it is a comedy about two cops that are investigating a crime and to get close to the possible suspects, they have to dress up like women. Although these two movies have different purposes within the aspect of the lesson they try to convey, their overall appeal to the audience is exactly the same. Both of these movies entertain everyone. They make the people laugh.

Oechslin 5 A movie is supposed to entertain someone; grab their attention; give them something that they can take home with them. All movies try to achieve some goal whether it is teach a lesson, prove a point, defend a case, or just simply for pure fun. Shes The Man is such an interesting text because of the fact that it seems like its only there to entertain, but its underlying meaning is going so much deeper. It is trying to make a statement; it is trying to get something out there in a humorous way. This movie is truly a favorite and displays everything it is trying to have come across almost perfectly. There is nothing about this movie that needs to be changed, nor is there anything about this movie that isnt 100% funny. Yes, there are some parts that are particularly weird. Yes, not everything may be funny to every single person that goes and sees it. But movies these days arent going to please everyone. Theres always that one party pooper that doesnt end up liking something that everyone else in the group likes. Thats what is so great about this time period; everyone can voice his or her own opinion. Shes The Man was an amazing movie to watch and one of the funniest comedies ever written. With its overall charming and hilarious jokes, talented actors, and good story structure it fits the genre perfectly. The purpose is that everyone was created equal and it shows that through its devious plot, creative costumes and people, and its complex love triangle. There is no telling what this movie can or cannot do. After all, movies are here to tell a story and Shes The Man definitely reveals a story; a story that will forever stand out in its genre..
Comment [BC13]: Katie, You certainly cover the comedic aspect of the movie, but as you look to revise, work on including concrete details from the movie to help demonstrate your point. Once you do this, talk about these details in order to prove your point that this is a comedy. Also, be sure that you are conscious of the structure you use. Much of this paper is about the comedic aspect of the movie, so topic sentences at the beginnings of your paragraphs and a clear relation to the overall idea at the ends of your paragraphs can carry much more weight. As you mentioned in your memo, bb sure to work on your individual sentences as well. You have a great deal of informal language in your paper. Work on changing those words or phrases to stronger words and phrases that demonstrate exactly the ideas you want to convey. Let me know if you need any help. Im looking forward to seeing what youll change for your portfolio! -Ms. C Formatted: Font: Italic Formatted: Font: Italic, No underline
