About this catalogue

This catalogue provides information on standard
products. Alcan reserves the right to discontinue or
augment the offerings in this catalogue. Alcan
manufactures a wide range of additional products in
various sizes which can be supplied by special order
contact your local sales representative for details.
Wire and cable products supplied by Alcan comply with
the codes, standards and product specifications as
indicated in this catalogue.
Weights and measurements are subject to manufacturing
tolerances and product design changes. Consequently,
Alcan does not accept responsibility for costs incurred
by a purchaser as a result of weights and measurements
not conforming exactly to those indicated.

ABOUT ALCAN
or over a century, Alcan has been a name people have
known and trusted. Our products have helped supply
communities with power from coast to coast across the
continent. And in that time weve become synonymous not
only with aluminium, but with the latest technology and
highest standards of quality and service.

We offer a full range of bare and insulated wires to both the

utility and distribution markets, and support them with
technical experts specifically trained to help our customers
achieve their desired end results.
We believe our customers satisfaction relies entirely on the
quality of our products. Thats why weve worked hard to
ensure theyre consistently superior to anything else on the
market. Our distribution centre, technical centre and
manufacturing facilities have all attained ISO 9000
certification, and were proud to have the only North
American manufacturing plant with the triple accreditation
of ISO 9000, 14000 and 18000.
Were committed to the success of our products, and to the
satisfaction of our customers. Thats why Alcan will continue
to be a name people know and trust.

Characteristics of Alcan Conductors

These three standards cover all class AA conductors of

any construction. Although these specifications were
made for round wires, compact and self-damping
conductors can be designed in accordance with them, in
which case the equivalent wire diameter is used instead
of the round wire.

On the following pages some characteristics of standard

Canadian bare conductors manufactured by Alcan Cable
are arranged in table form. These include code word,
size, stranding, physical dimensions, rated strength, as
well as d-c resistance. These conductors meet the
requirement of the relevant CSA Standards.

Many enhancements have been made from the 1975

version, including metricising all dimensions. However,
there are two major changes that characterize this C49
series: The adoption of IEC designation and the
inclusion of aluminium Mg-Si alloy.

CSA Standards
In the mid 80s, the C49 series of specifications were
revised from the 1975 version to be closer to the IEC
format. This meant having a main specification ruling
the construction of the conductors, and two
specifications for material. This CSA series comprises
the following revised standards:

New CSA Designation System

In order to have a more descriptive designation, CSA
has adopted the IEC system. Using this system, the
conductor type and materials are fully described by a
simple descriptor. For example, an ACSR becomes an
A1/S1A. An ASC becomes A1, etc. The following table
lists the alloy designation. The conductor type is
complemented by the size and stranding. Here are some
examples:

CAN/CSA-C49.1-M87: Round Wire, Concentric Lay,

Overhead Electrical Conductors
CAN/CSA-C49.6-M85: Zinc-Coated Steel Wires for Use
in Overhead Electrical Conductors

A1-100: An aluminium stranded conductor with a

cross-section of 100 mm2.

CAN/CSA-C49.7-M85: Aluminium Round Wires for Use in

Overhead Electrical Conductors

A2-100: An aluminium alloy stranded conductor with

an equivalent area of 100 mm2.
A1/S1A-100 (6/1): An aluminium conductor, steel
reinforced. The outside consists of 6 wires of A1 with
an area of 100 mm2. The core consists of one wire of S1A.
Please consult CSAC49.1 clause 2 for more details.

Aluminium Mg-Si Alloy

As mentioned previously, there were no existing
Canadian standards to describe alloy AA5005 or
AA6101. Moreover, Alcan had been commercializing
AA6101-T81 and AA6101-T83 as Arvidal HS (High
Strength) and Arvidal HC (High Conductivity) for
many years. This void has been filled by C49.7. This

conductor alloy, and its tempers, is very popular as it

allowed the replacement of 6/1 ACSR stranding with a
7-wire construction that has no magnetic effects due to
the presence of a steel core, thus reducing the ACresistance. Today all types of alloy conductors are made
and used in applications from transmission to
distribution. The following table gives some of the
properties of the aluminium alloys and tempers.

A Word About Code Words

CSA has broken with tradition and listed hundreds of
conductors in metric sizes. This effort was necessary
since the specification was converted to metric only.
Alcan has supported their design and inclusion in the
specifications, and can make any of the sizes listed in the
specification. However traditions are hard to change.
Canadian designers use kcmil and code words, not mm2.
This is why Alcan Cables catalogue has listed the
traditional conductors used in Canada by code names
and kcmil.
Code words are a great way to characterize conductors.
In general, code words are unique and therefore remove
the uncertainty around the identification of a
conductor. They are used around the world. In North
America, code words are registered at, and administered
by, The Aluminium Association, Inc. (900 19th Street,
N.W., Washington D.C. 20006). This organization
publishes a booklet entitled Code words for overhead
aluminium electrical conductors where most code
words used in the world can be found.

It is important, however, to understand that a code word

is attached solely to a geometry, and not a specification.
The code word Drake for instance refers to a 795
kcmil 26/7 ACSR. This sets the conductors wire size and
numbers but not its properties. It is thus possible to find
Drake ACSR with properties calculated from ASTM as
well as CSA.
Finally, it is possible to find Canadian conductors with
the same code name as a foreign conductor but with a
different geometry. This is due to the fact that some
conductors were given a code word by users in a country
but without registration at The Aluminium Association.
The same conductor or code name was then used by
another user and registered, creating a conflict.
Although this is rare, it does exist in North America.
The Aluminium Association booklet, however, lists most
of those exceptions. Anyone involved in specifying
conductors should consult this booklet.
