Our reach
Femina HIPs popular media products have gained groundbreaking reach unparalleled by any other media platform in Tanzania. Every year we reach an estimated 10 million people out of a total population of 42 million. While mainstream print media are circulated in limited numbers, our recurring magazines Fema and Si Mchezo! are printed in 170,000 and 175,000 copies respectively making them the most circulated magazines in Tanzania. According to TAMPS 2009, 42% of the adult population (9.8 million people) know Fema. Each week the magazine is read by 2.8 million people making it the most read in the country. Si Mchezo! is the second most read magazine with an estimated 2.6 million readers per issue. Almost 1 million Tanzanians are regular viewers of our weekly TV Talk Show and 3.4 million watch the show every now and then. The Pilika Pilika radio show is estimated to have more than 5.4 million listeners in mainland Tanzania and Chezasalama.com has more than 35,500 registered users. Together, this makes Femina HIP Tanzanias most recognised and effective media platform promoting healthy lifestyles and livelihoods.

What makes Femina HIP special?


Femina HIP is a multimedia, civil society initiative working with youth, communities and partners throughout Tanzania. We promote healthy lifestyles, gender equality, sexual health, HIV/AIDS prevention, environmentalism, entrepreneurship and civic education. Edutainment is our main approach. We entertain and educate audiences through real life stories, testimonials, role modelling and docudrama. Through our participatory, interactive production process we give VOICE to ordinary people across Tanzania.

Femina HIP has more than 900 partner organisations and more than 2,300 secondary schools across the country in our distribution database. More than 500 schools and partner organisations are on our waiting list. Femina HIP emphasises monitoring and evaluation and we continuously assess our reach and effect. Format: Fema is a quarterly, 64-page magazine using Swahili and English. Fema was launched in 1999 and is printed on high quality paper Print Run: 170,000 (Feb. 2010) Target: Fema has a strong secondary school profile and is endorsed by the Ministry of Education and Vocational Training. The magazine targets young women and men aged 15-25 in secondary schools, workplaces and organisational settings Content: Each issue has a specific theme and includes a cover story featuring a role model or a celebrity, club and advice pages, photo-novels, letters from readers and competitions. Our young journalists travel to different districts to collect real life stories and voices. Topics include sexuality, HIV/AIDS, life skills, civic education, entrepreneurship and youth lifestyles Availability & Reach: Distributed free of charge to more than 2,300 secondary schools in every district of Tanzania, as well as 337 partner organisations. A small percentage of copies are also sold commercially. According to TAMPS 2009, 9.8 million Tanzanians know Fema magazine and every week 2.8 million Tanzanians read it Related Projects: Femina HIP promotes a culture of reading and supports the formation of Fema Clubs. Currently we have 600 registered Fema Clubs across Tanzania.

Format: A 30-minute TV talk show in Swahili produced and aired since 2003 Frequency: Broadcast weekly on ITV and TBC1 with repeats Target: Rural and urban youth aged 15-25 Content: The shows dynamic young hosts invite youth, experts, celebrities and politicians to the studio to discuss critical - sometimes controversial issues relating to youth lifestyles. Segments also include testimonials as well as letters and text messages from viewers. Increasingly, the shows are shot on location in rural areas allowing a wider public to share their experience, giving voice to young people and their communities Availability & Reach: Copies of the TV shows are sent to Fema Clubs and partner organisations on request who use them in community outreach. According to TAMPS 2009, Fema TV Talk Show has 3.4 million viewers; out of these about 1 million watch the show regularly

Si Mchezo! magazine

Format: A bimonthly, 32-page full colour magazine launched in 2003. Si Mchezo! (meaning No Joke!) uses Swahili tailored for semi-literate youth Print Run: 175,000 (Feb. 2010) Target: Out of school youth, aged 1525, and their communities, particularly in rural areas Content: Topics include healthy lifestyles, sexuality, life skills, HIV/AIDS, entrepreneurship and livelihoods. Each issue includes a testimonial, photo-novels, cartoons and letters from readers. Editorial collection is conducted in the field providing exposure to regional variation and creating high ownership among readers Availability & Reach: Distributed free of charge or in a barter for transportation agreement to almost 600 partner organisations in every region of Tanzania including care and treatment clinics, large-scale work places, CBOs, CSOs and local government, particularly in the rural areas. Each issue of Si Mchezo! has a readership of 2.6 million and every week, 1.2 million Tanzanians read the bi-monthly magazine. Only 13% of the adult population has never read Si Mchezo!

Other media products


Femina HIP also works through radio and web and produces various one-off booklets. Since 2007, we have been a partner in the weekly radio show Pilika Pilika produced by Mediae. With its estimated 5.4 million listeners, the show is immensely popular. Our interactive website Chezasalama.com has since its launch in 2004 grown into one of the most visited Tanzanian websites. We also produce and distribute a range of one-off publications in collaboration with partners on various life skills issues.
