Tuesday, August 7, 2012 Jewish Warsaw Meet up at Warsaw airport. Proceed to the huge, fully intact Jewish cemetery at Gesia Street where many Jewish luminaries are buried. This will give us an insight into the rich Jewish life that existed in Warsaw before the War. Over lunch briefing from our scholar on Who are the Polish Jews? Stop at the Nozyk Synagogue for a quick look at the only surviving active synagogue in Warsaw. After lunch, proceed to the site of the Ghetto and see the Umschlagplatz, the point of departure for trains transporting Jews to Treblinka; Mila 18; and Rappaports Ghetto Uprising Memorial. Check into the hotel, unpack and refresh. Enjoy a kosher welcome dinner together with Rabbi Michael Shudrich (nc), the Chief Rabbi of Poland. An optional short walk in the Old City of Warsaw will be available after for those who wish. Overnight: Novotel Hotel, Warsaw Wednesday, August 8, 2012 Tykocin and Treblinka Breakfast, followed by scholars briefing. Depart hotel with lunchbox for the (3hr) drive to Tykocin, a onetime shtetl. Although no Jews remain here, we will see the surviving Baroque style synagogue in all its splendor, dominating the southern end of this small town. Head to Lupochowo Forest, site of mass murder of Tykocin Jews. From here, proceed to Treblinka extermination camp, totally destroyed during the war. Visit the haunting memorial erected in a pastoral setting. Return to Warsaw in early evening and enjoy dinner together. Overnight: Novotel Hotel, Warsaw Thursday August 9, 2012 Lublin Breakfast & briefing. Check out of hotel, with lunchbox, for the picturesque shtetl of Kazimierz Dolny which today is an artists colony. See the town square and wall of headstones. Continue to the notorious Majdanek Death Camp, overlooking the town of Lublin. After the visit, proceed to Lublin Old Town, much of which was Jewish before 1939. See the restored, former highly regarded Chachmei Lublin Yeshiva which has been returned to the Jewish Community. In the late afternoon, visit with Brama Grodska Theatre group, a foremost cultural institution that fosters awareness of Lublins rich multicultural history and promotes tolerance for other cultures through theatre and various other educational activi ties. Check into hotel, freshen up for dinner. After dinner, attend a short theatrical performance with Brama Grodska on Isaac Bashevis Singer, the prolific Polishborn Yiddish writer. Overnight: Europa Hotel, Lublin Friday August 10, 2012 Towns of Galicia After breakfast and briefing, proceed towards Krakow, travelling through the southern part of Poland that used to be called Galicia pass through towns that have a rich Jewish heritage. We will stop in Tarnow to see the old Jewish quarter and the Bimah, the only remnant left of the brick synagogue that was burned down by Nazis in 1939. Upon arrival in Krakow, check into the hotel. Relax and prepare for Shabbat. Attend Kabbalat Shabbat services in the 16th century Remuh synagogue (if possible.) Enjoy a festive Shabbat dinner with local community leaders. Overnight: Holiday Inn, Krakow Saturday, August 11, 2012 Shabbat in Krakow After breakfast, you are invited to attend Shabbat morning services. Shabbat lunch together, followed by a walking tour of the Old Town of Krakow, including Old Market Square with its Cloth Hall in the center of the Square. Participate in a Havdalah ceremony with members of the Jewish community. After dinner, enjoy the rest of the evening at leisure. Overnight: Holiday Inn, Krakow Sunday, August 12,2012 Jewish Krakow Breakfast & briefing on history of Krakow Jewry, one of the oldest Jewish communities in Poland. Depart the hotel for the Jewish Quarter, or Kazimierz. Visit two synagogues the Alte Schul which today is a museum, and the Remuh Schul with its adjoining Jewish cemetery. Cross the Vistula River to Podgorze, site of the Jewish ghetto. Visit the Pharmacy that was in the ghetto, and then walk to Schindler's factory. Visit the Plazow labor camp where Ghetto Jews worked. Lunch together in the Galicia Museum see the beautiful photographic exhibition documenting the rich Jewish life as it existed before the Holocaust. After lunch, step across the road to the new JCC where we will hear from a group of Jewish youngsters who will talk about Jewish identity and Jewish life in Poland today. Visit the Collegium Majus, the medieval campus of the Jagellonian University where Copernicus taught, followed by a panoramic drive around the Wawel Castle. Enjoy dinner together this evening with a Hidden Child or Righteous Gentile (invited). Overnight: Holiday Inn, Krakow Monday August 13, 2012 Auschwitz After breakfast, proceed to Auschwitz, the most notorious and largest of the camps, for an educational orientation of the Auschwitz camps with lunch box. Our scholar will brief the group on the bus en route to Auschwitz. Visit the concentration camp of Auschwitz, and then the death camp at Birkenau, followed by a Yizkor service at the Memorial. Visit the Auschwitz Jewish Center in Oswiecim to see the renovated synagogue and visit its education center housing a pictorial exhibit of the Jewish community before the Holocaust. Meet with the director and hear about the work of the center. Then, hear a panel of educators discuss Poland: AntiSemitism: Confronting the Past and Looking Ahead. Panelists will include educators who will address the role of education in promoting tolerance to students and discuss the state of AntiSemitism, and from the director of the Jewish Center we will hear what t it is like working and living in the shadow of Auschwitz. Return to Krakow for our farewell dinner with summation of trip. Overnight: Holiday Inn, Krakow Tuesday August 14, 2012 Departure Breakfast and check out of hotel. Depart for the airport for the flight back to the United States.
