Course website: http://www.engr.siu.edu/~haibo/ece531 Course Description: This course covers fundamental circuit techniques and design issues for mixed-signal VLSI. The topics include the design of analog-to-digital (ADC) and digital-to-analog (DAC) converters, signal conditioning circuits used with data converters, signal integrity issues in modern VLSI circuits, and high-speed I/O circuits. Labs and class projects will be given and account for a significant portion of the final grade. Cadence and Matlab are the main CAD tools used in the class. Topics: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. 8. 9. Design issues for mixed-signal VLSI Noise analysis of basic amplifier circuits Comparator & switches Nyquist-Rate Digital-to-Analog Converters (current-mode, voltage-mode, and Charge-mode DACs) Nyquist-rate Analog-to-Digital Converters (Flash, Successive-approximation, Algorithmic ADC) Oversampling ADCs and DACs Design and analysis of signal acquisition path (signal conditioning, filter, and analog to digital conversion) Signal integrity issues in modern VLSI High-speed I/O circuit design

Fall 2011
Class Policy: 1. No late homework, lab & project reports will be accepted except rare cases. 2. No early or makeup exams will be given except rare cases. 3. Rare cases are medical conditions (with Doctors notes), family emergency, and religious observations. Note that leaving school early for winter break is not qualified as a rare case. Lab & Project 1. Six labs will be assigned. The objectives of the labs are listed below: o Lab 1: design of an opamp circuit model o Lab 2: design and performance analysis of an amplifier circuit o Lab 3: design of a current-mode scaling DAC o Lab 4: design of a sample and hold (S&H) circuit o Lab 5: design of a charge-scaling ADC o Lab 6: design of high-speed I/O circuits 2. Class project: design and characterization of an 8-bit SAR ADC circuit Groups need to be formed to carry out labs and the project. Each group can at most have two students.
