Dr. Dilay Çelebi Receives 2008 Doctoral Dissertation Award from CSCMP

Lombard, Illinois USA (September 22, 2008)—The Council of Supply Chain Man-
agement Professionals announced the selection of Dr. Dilay Çelebi as the recipient of its
2008 Doctoral Dissertation Award.
Dr. Çelebi will be honored for her research entitled, Stochastic Lot Sizing in a Centralized
Distribution Network, at the opening session of the 2008 CSCMP Supply Chain Management
Educators’ Conference (SCMEC) on October 5 in Denver, Colorado.
In Dr. Çelebi’s research, a mathematical model is initially developed to represent the
stochastic cost structure of a two-level distribution network. The model is verified through experi-
mental study and a discrete simulation model. The assumptions of the mathematical formulations
are checked for validity, after which dynamic programming formulations are given to evaluate the
optimal lot sizes. This results in several different proposed solutions. A demonstration of the
model’s potential applicability to a one warehouse, multiple retailer problem follows, and a
real-life application of the model and solution algorithms complete the research.
“Dr. Çelebi’s research is timely and well-written,” said Dr. Linda Silver Coley, assistant
professor of marketing at Miami University in Ohio and CSCMP’s 2008 Doctoral Dissertation
Award Chair. “Most importantly, it is rigorous and utilizes a sequential process to answer the
research question. The work makes both theoretical and practical contributions to the supply
chain industry.”
Dr. Çelebi holds a BS in industrial engineering from the Middle East Technical University
and an MBA from Istanbul Bilgi University. She received her doctorate in 2008 from Istanbul
Technical University. During the summer of 2008, she was a visiting scholar at The State Uni-
versity of New York (SUNY).
A recipient of various research grants, her work has been published in numerous global
conference proceedings. She brings diverse industry experience to the classroom and to her
research, which includes software and systems analysts, marketing research, and operations
model development.
Founded in 1963, the Council of Supply Chain Management Professionals is the pre-
eminent association for individuals involved in supply chain management. CSCMP provides
global educational, career development, and networking opportunities to over 8,500 members.
