TRAINING MATERIALS AND PUBLICATIONS

Shared Lives Plus has developed a range of training and learning materials and publications to help schemes and carers.

Learning the Ropes

Learning the Ropes (LTR) is a manual for Shared lives schemes. It defines the knowledge and skills that all Shared Lives carers need in order to do their job and provides documents for schemes to use to assess and approve Carers against those standards. It also provides documents that can be used to support and monitor the work of carers in a way that meets the needs of carers and of regulators and standard setters. In addition LTR provides learning material that schemes can use to offer training opportunities to carers before and after approval. Topics covered include: Pre approval / Induction training Risk Communication, choices and advocacy Challenging behaviour Looking after yourself, roles and responsibilities as a SL carer Challenging prejudice, discrimination and oppression Abuse and protection Introduction to learning disability Health and leading a healthy lifestyle Handling information, recording and reporting Person centred assessment and planning Citizenship and community living Relationships and friendships Each section includes information, guidance and a range of learning material, which will equip the trainer to deliver a workshop on the topic to a group of carers OR to an individual/couple in their own home. Section 5 of the LTR pack contains everything SL Schemes need in order to support SL carers to complete the Learning Disability Qualification Award Level 2 and the Shared Lives Accreditation Level 3 including; all learning materials, workbooks and assessment evidence logs. More information about these two awards can be found on the Shared Lives Plus website. Learning the Ropes is currently being reviewed and a new Shared Lives Plus Learning Pack will replace it and will contain up to date learning materials to help Shared Lives schemes meet any learning requirements for their Shared Lives carers.

Shared Lives Plus

Shared Lives Plus Guidance Pack

Shared Lives Plus

COMMISSIONED TRAINING
From May 2011 the way in which training is commissioned has been changed. Training should now be commissioned directly from Shared Lives Plus accredited trainers. This can be by individual schemes, groups of schemes or by a Shared Lives Plus branch or country committees. An information sheet on what each trainer has on offer, including any additional specialist training they can deliver, can be found at the end of this brochure. The terms under which our trainers operate are also attached together with the form which they will use to commission training with you. Shared Lives Plus staff are available for use as co-trainers and for some courses (where current contact with Shared Lives carers and/or workers across the UK is vital to the course being useful), it will be specified that a member of Shared Lives Plus staff should always be used as a co-trainer. In this instance, Shared Lives Plus will charge the trainer a fee of 400 per day per staff member, which will be charged by the trainer to the purchaser. Shared Lives Plus will continue to monitor the quality of the training and feedback forms will be provided to assist with this. We are keen to increase our pool of trainers and would be interested in hearing from anyone experienced trainers who would like to take on this role. We are particularly looking to improve the geographical spread of trainers across the UK. Anyone interested should contact john@sharedlivesplus.org.uk or by phone on 07739819825

I have 25 years of experience working in care, mainly with people with a learning difficulty and latterly with the elderly. I have an NVQ Level 4 in Care, a teaching qualification and a Diploma in Counselling Skills. I currently work as a Tutor/Assessor for Care qualifications and also provide support for people who are bereaved or suffering from difficulties in their everyday life. My specialism is supporting people with a learning difficulty through bereavement, having worked in this area since 2001. I have been running this Loss and Bereavement training programme for 10 years. It is aimed at workers from all disciplines. I adopt a very responsive approach, adapting my training to meet the needs and expectations of participants on the day. I work for Shared Lives Plus as their Awards Co-ordinator and come into contact with Shared Lives Carers on a regular basis, and as a result have a firm understanding of the support that they give and their commitment to the work they do. My training is based on recent experience gained in the capacity of Registered Manager for a local authority Shared Lives Lives Service for seven years. Like many LA services we had to put together a robust business case complimented by a bespoke Pricing Tool in order to secure our future, the success of which was reflected by approval for an increase in staffing, and ultimately recognition by commissioners and senior management regarding the value and importance of shared lives. I established a strong Independent Panel with experience in managing a variety of Carer related issues, facilitated training on CIS for the team in order to cascade this down to Carers, started to approve Carers able to offer a service in the individual's own home to include the Asian community, and received consistently excellent outcomes from CQC inspections. I have an NVQ level 4 in management and experience of supporting SW students as an accredited Practice Assessor. Prior to working with Shared Lives I was a manager in the Probation Service for several years and so have significant experience in working with vulnerable adults, and in partnership with other professionals. My style has been described as collaborative, conscientious, and committed, and I look forward to the opportunity of working with you.

I am able to deliver the following Shared Lives Plus training courses:

Developing a 'bespoke' Pricing Tool. CQC Essential Standards and evidencing compliance.

Common Induction Standards - implementation. Panel Processes Expanding your service e.g. Business Case, Licences, provision for Dementia, working with minority ethnic groups and Kinship.

I also deliver these training courses, which are not part of the Shared Lives Plus training programme:

These are also the standards which trainers should be able to expect from the Lives Plus team and its members and from other trainers. Shared Lives Plus values are that we believe people should be in control of their services and able to pursue ordinary, valued lives within their chosen families, relationships and communities. Shared Lives Plus values care and support which: is built around individuals: developing their strengths, gifts and potential; promotes equality and diversity; is safe but also enables people to take risks in pursuit of their goals; is cost-effective, with consistently better outcomes than alternatives. Shared Lives Plus aims to treat all colleagues with respect, fairness and in a positive manner. Trainers are expected always to work in a way that: values diversity and promotes equality of opportunity; represents Shared Lives Plus and Shared Lives in a professional way and reflects our values; respects the confidentiality of clients and those involved in Shared Lives. Trainers are approved for one or more named courses within the Shared Lives Plus training programme. Trainers are approved for courses on the basis that the trainer has a sufficient breadth and depth of up to date knowledge on the particular topic and the skills and experience to deliver effective training exercises. Trainers are responsible for keeping themselves up to date with relevant practice, policies, legislation, regulation and research, and for identifying gaps in their knowledge or skills and for discussing with Lives Plus staff how these gaps can be filled. Shared Lives Plus will send trainers our monthly ebulletins and other relevant information. Trainers will be able to access our current training and support information, including Learning the Ropes (this information is not for reproduction or further circulation outside our network of members).
