1. INTRODUCTION
The Williams WM 526 Electronic Accelerator Pedal converts downward pressure on the pedal roller assembly into an electronic signal that is outputted to the

ECU on the H Series Caterpillar drive engine to control throttle position. The sensor on the pedal provides a pulse width modulated (PWM) signal proportional to the pedal angular displacement

GROUP 700 2. REMOVAL

1. Disconnect the throttle pedal sensor connector (Fig. 1). 2. Remove the three capscrews holding the throttle pedal mounting plate to the floor of the truck (Fig. 1).

4. INSPECTION AND TESTING

4.1 Pedal Shaft. Check the pedal shaft for corrosion, pitting or signs of seizure. If the pedal does not pivot freely on the shaft, replace the shaft. If the pedal shaft is loose in the pedal and brackets or shows signs of wear, replace it. 4.2 Sensor Roller. Check the roller on the sensor module to make certain the roller is turning freely on its shaft. Check the face of the wheel for signs of wear and damage or debris embedded in the wheel that would prevent free movement. Check the spring loaded arm for full travel and spring resistance. If the sensor arm does not move freely due to wheel, arm or spring resistance problems, replace the sensor unit. If the arm moves too freely due to spring wear and offers little resistance, replace the sensor unit. 4.3 Sensor Testing. The throttle pedal can be tested for a correct PWM output signal using a test meter that has the ability to do PWM duty cycle measurements. A Fluke 87 Series V Digital Multimeter has these capabilities and is shown as the example in this sequence.

Figure 2. Connector

3. DISASSEMBLY
1. Remove the two convex hex head mounting screws holding the sensor assembly and sensor cable to the pedal assembly. 2. Remove the two retainer rings (one from each end) of the throttle pedal shaft at the hinge (Fig. 3). Drive the shaft out of pedal with a narrow drift and remove the pedal.

NOTE
If the throttle pedal shaft is removed a new Williams kit pn. 130553 must be used for installation, as the shaft retainer rings will be damaged during removal and cannot be reused.

NOTE
The throttle pedal must be installed in the truck and the drive engine must be running when performing the following tests.

1. Unplug the sensor connector (Figure 2) and test for 8.0 Volts (+/- 1V) input at engine side (male) portion of connector. With the Voltage meter set on DC volts, place the red test lead on Pin A (#1, Fig. 2) and the black lead on Pin 2 (#2, Fig. 2). 2. If no voltage is present at the connector, or the voltage is greater than 9V or less than 7V, a problem may be present in the wiring harness or the engine ECU. If correct voltage is present at the input side of the connector, plug the connector together and check for voltage at the output side of the connector using spoon type test leads. If voltage levels are correct at the output side of the connector, check the harness running to the sensor for signs of damage. 3. Check the sensor for continuity to ground at pin 2 (Black, Fig. 2) on the sensor connector. If no ground is present, check for problems in the sensor plug, the wiring and at the ECU unit. 4. Check for a correct PWM wave at pin 3 (White, Fig. 2) as follows: a. Install the red test lead with a spoon type probe in the V jack of the Fluke model 87V (Fig. 4). Install the black lead with a spoon type probe in the COM jack. b. Push the HZ % button two times until the % icon appears on the upper right corner of the display (Fig. 4). 5. Place the red meter lead spoon on the white pin (signal) of the connector. Place the black lead spoon on the black pin (ground) of the connector. 6. The meter should read between 10.0 - 22.0 with no pressure on the pedal (engine at idle). 7. Push down on the pedal gradually and the reading should rise to 75.0 - 90.0 at full throttle. 8. If the readings are not correct at no throttle or full throttle positions replace the sensor assembly or the complete pedal assembly.

GROUP 700 5. ASSEMBLY

1. Slide the throttle pedal shaft through the pedal hinge and the mounting brackets. Install a new retaining ring on both ends of the shaft, making certain each ring seats fully in the groove on the shaft. 2. Install the sensor assembly on the pedal using two convex hex head mounting screws. Torque the screws to 20 In. Lbs (2.3 Nm). 3. Install the pedal assembly to the floor of the truck with three capscrews. Torque the fasteners to 100 In. Lbs (11.3 Nm). 4. Check the roller assembly operation by depressing and releasing the pedal several times. 5. If the pedal is operating freely, connect the three pin connector to the wiring harness and test the accelerator operation with the drive engine running.
