FAQ: Demonstration Schools
Using Depth & Complexity to Build the Dierentiated Classroom
Who attends the workshop?
Teachers from the host district and other teachers from neighboring districts. We also invite Administrators
and Board Members to attend at no cost. Host district may choose to keep the event in-house.
What is the cost and who pays for the registration fee?
The registration fee ranges from $360-$400 per teacher depending on number of teachers attending and
number of demonstration classrooms. Teachers who attend the workshop from outside the host district all pay
the registration fee to attend. That money usually comes from school site funds, and in some cases a district
oce budget pays for registrations. Teachers occasionally pay their own way to attend. Teachers from the host
district are invited to attend at a 20-25% discount. In addition, the host district will be invited to send a certain
number of teachers at no cost! Those numbers will be determined by the number of teachers outside the host
district that register.
How long does the demo school last?
The workshop is ve half-days for participating students, and three full days for attending teachers. Students are
in classrooms from 8-Noon, and teachers are on campus from 8-3 p.m.
Is it possible to run a shorter event that costs less?
Yes. We can oer a two-day demo school that includes two morning observation periods in the demonstration
classrooms. If this format is chosen, the students only attend for three days, not the normal ve. While this does
reduce registration cost somewhat, we have found that students who attend an entire week glean the most from
the enrichment week, and additionally create a better observation environment for participating teachers.
Can we run this even just in our own district?
Yes. In this case, the host district will be responsible for paying a at fee, and may send up to a certain number of
teachers. For example, if the host district pays $30,000, they may send up to 100 teachers to the event. However,
usually the Demonstration School includes participants from the host district and surrounding districts, and is
paid for by registration fees.
Who advertises and secures teachers to attend, and who collects the registration fees?
Teachers from its own district to attend, but J Taylor Education takes care of all participant paperwork,
including processing the registration fees. Registration fees can be paid by Purchase Order, personal check, or
credit card.
Who advertises and secures students to attend?
J Taylor Education advertises for attendees from outside the district, and takes care of all participant
paperwork. The host school district oversees student registration, but J Taylor Education will work with host
district to make this a smooth process.
How much does it cost for students to attend?
Nothing! This event is free for all students. There have been instances where the host district charges a small
fee ($25-$50 per student) which osets some of their costs, but J Taylor does not charge students to attend.
What other costs does the host district incur?
There are some minor costs. At least one contact person from the host district needs to be on campus during the
entire event. Often times, the contact person is an administrator from the host school site or an administrator
from the district oce. Host districts must also have at least one custodian on campus.
What does the format of the day look like?
Teachers visit demonstration classrooms in the morning and attend workshops in the afternoon. There are also
workshops oered in the morning when teachers are not in demonstration classrooms.
Can the workshop be held at a school site that also is hosting summer school?
Yes. However, it is preferable and easier to run the demo school if the workshops occur during a non-summer
school period or at a campus not hosting a summer school.
Are there any additional perks for the host district?
Yes! Any supplies purchased for the event by J Taylor Education will be gifted to the host school site or host
district following the workshop. In addition, the host district may earn credits with J Taylor Education, based
on number of teachers attending the Demo School. In the past, this amount has ended up between $500-$1,200.
The credit can be used for future purchases of PD from J Taylor Education.
