Penn State Child Sex Abuse Scandal Sandusky Charged in 2 New Cases of Alleged Child Sex Abuse

Victim 9 testified that during his second summer attending Second Mile camps, he met Sandusky while participating in a pool activity as part of the Second Mile camp. Sandusky approached him, asking him about his life and spoke with him about hobbies and activities that interested the child. After speaking for a while, Sandusky expressed an interest in spending time in the future with Victim 9. Sandusky asked for his phone number and eventually called Victim 9's mother and made arrangements to spend additional time with him. At the time of this initial contact, Victim 9 would have been 11 or 12 years old. Subsequently, Sandusky took Victim 9 to numerous Penn State University football games. Over time, he also gave Victim 9 a number of gifts and even provided him with money. Eventually, Sandusky would also go directly to Victim 9's school and pick him up on Friday afternoons. Victim 9 would often spend overnights with Sandusky and be returned to his home, following these visits, by Sandusky. Victim 9 testified that Sandusky was a very affectionate person. The victim testified "I took it at first he was just a nice guy, like he went to church every weekend, his kids would come over every once in a while an stuff. And after a while, like, he got used to me and stuff and started getting further and further, wanting -- to touchy feely." He further stated that, in the beginning, Sandusky started out with hugging, rubbing, cuddling and tickling. These contacts, initially

viewed by the victim as simple acts of affection, escalated into sexual assaults. Victim 9 testified that, during his overnight visits with Sandusky, he always stayed in a bedroom located in the basement of the Sandusky home. He stated that there were a number of bedrooms located elsewhere in the home and that at least two of these were not occupied. Victim 9 was always, without exception, told to sleep in the basement bedroom. Victim 9 testified that Sandusky specifically told him to stay in the basement unless otherwise directed by Sandusky. He ate meals in the basement and the food would be brought to him by Sandusky. Victim 9 testified that he spend overnights in the Sandusky home on numerous occasions between the ages of 12 and 15. He further testified that despite being in the Sandusky home on these numerous occasions, he had "barely any" contact with Sandusky's wife during his visits. He specifically testified that she "never" came into the basement when he was there. Victim 9 described a pattern of sexual assaults by Sandusky over a period of years. Many of these assaults occurred in the basement bedroom of Sandusky's residence. The victim testified that Sandusky forced him to perform oral sex on numerous occasions. Sandusky also attempted to engage in anal penetration of Victim 9 on at least sixteen occasions and at times did penetrate him. The victim testified that on at least one occasion he screamed for help, knowing that Sandusky's wife was upstairs, but no one ever came to help him. Victim 9 also testified that Sandusky would take him to a hotel in the State College area. At this hotel Sandusky would utilize the swimming pool, Jacuzzi and work out equipment. These visits often occurred at times when the pool was not occupied. Victim 9 testified that on one of these visits, when only he and Sandusky were in the pool, Sandusky exposed his erect penis to the victim. He stated that at other times Sandusky had him touch his erect penis and perform oral sex on him during some of these visits to the hotel.

Sandusky frequently told him that he loved and cared for him. He also told the victim to keep these things a secret. Victim 9 contacted the Pennsylvania State Police following the public disclosure of Sandusky's arrest pursuant to Presentment Number 12. Earlier today, 12 new counts of child sexual abuse were leveled against Jerry Sandusky from two new accusers, who are being referred to as Victims 9 and 10. With those new charges comes a new grand jury report, and like the first grand jury report on Jerry Sandusky, there are a ton of disturbing accusations found in it. One of those accusations: Victim 9 says that Jerry Sanduskys wife, Dorothy, either didnt hear or didnt respond to his screams for help from the basement of their State College home. From the new grand jury report: The victim testified that on at least one occasion he screamed for help, knowing that Sanduskys wife was upstairs, but no one ever came to help him, the presentment says. Victim 9 is now 18. According to the grand jury report, he met Sandusky through Second Mile from 2004-2008. The first time he met Sandusky was during a pool activity, when he was 11 or 12 years old. Sandusky approached him and asked him about his hobbies and interests, and expressed interest in spending more time with him in the future and asked for his phone number (ugh). Sandusky called Victim 9s mother, and made arrangements to spend more time with him. Victim 9 testifies that he began spending time at the Sandusky home.

Victim 9 was always told, without exception, to sleep in the basement bedroom. Victim 9 testified that Sandusky specifically told him to stay in the basement unless otherwise directed. It was in the basement, Victim 9 says, where he was brought all of his meals while staying with the Sanduskys. According to Victim 9, he had barely any contact with Sanduskys wife. She never came in the basement while he was there. It was also in the basement where many of the alleged sexual assaults took place. The victim testified that Sandusky performed oral sex on him. He testified Sandusky tried to rape him on at least 16 occasions and at times did penetrate him. [Grand Jury Presentment, The Patriot-News]

BY SARA GANIM AND JEFF FRANTZ, The Patriot-news Missed opportunities are a heartrending theme in the case against Jerry Sandusky. - An alleged victims cries for help from the Sandusky basement, according to grand jury testimony. - Another alleged victim telling his foster parent that he no longer wanted to spend time with Sandusky. - Reports of a groping in an outdoor pool on the Penn State campus. Prosecutors say that two more alleged victims have testified to the grand jury about those calls for help and how they were ignored. Their testimony has led to more child sex crimes charges against the 67year-old Centre County man.

Sandusky now faces more than 50 charges involving 10 alleged victims. All of the charges are expected to be fought at a preliminary hearing in Bellefonte on Tuesday. His attorney, Joe Amendola, said he will be prepared to fight and does not expect the new charges to lead to a continuance of the hearing. Clad in a Penn State wrestling track suit, sneakers and a sweatshirt, the former assistant football coach credited with turning Penn State into Linebacker U sat silently as a judge decided he would spend the night in jail. Sandusky was unable to post $250,000 cash bail fast enough to meet the end-of-the-day deadline. Amendola said Wednesday night he expected his client to be released today, and if he is, hell be confined to his home with an ankle monitor. Sandusky is still prohibited from having contact with children. Sandusky had nothing to say to reporters as he was led away from the courtroom by state troopers. Neighbors watched Wednesday afternoon as three unmarked cars pulled into the long driveway on Grandview Road and brought the former defensive coordinator out in handcuffs. Amendola chided the state attorney generals office for not giving him a heads-up. He said he heard about the arrest from the media. We always anticipated this, Amendola said. Its disappointing the attorney generals office chose to do it this way.

Special appointed prosecutor Joseph E. McGettigan in turn pointed out that Amendola was late for the hearing. Clearly, there will be no warm camaraderie in court. Amendola said he had warned Sandusky that more charges might come. Jerrys scratching his head, saying, Whats next? but I said, Dont ask that question. Dont ask could it get worse because it can and we just have to be prepared for whatever comes down the road, and we will be. Hinting toward his defense, Amendola noted that The Second Miles $9 million worth and how the potential for lawsuits against the charity, Sandusky and Penn State might attract false accusers. Sandusky founded the charity aimed at helping troubled or needy youths. I think its an invitation for more people to come forward who might not necessarily be forthright, he said. That wont happen at Sanduskys preliminary hearing Tuesday. In Pennsylvania, witness credibility is not an issue until trial, said Chris Mallios, a staff attorney at Aequitas, a prosecutors resource center for violence against women. Still, Mallios said, Amendola will want to get as much of the alleged victims testimony on the record as the judge will allow, in hopes of using it against the witnesses at trial. Thats where the harsh interrogation will come. Many of the alleged victims are expected to testify Tuesday. That type of attack on credibility is a no-brainer, Mallios said. When you have a defendant whos prestigious or wealthy, you always say [the victim] wants money.

The truth is the truth, and the truth will come out. When victims talk about their experiences, details that only they could have known ... the truth comes out at trial. The scandal has raised questions about whether Penn State officials did all they should have to stop the alleged activity and led to the ousting of head football coach Joe Paterno and President Graham Spanier. In the basement The basement of the Sandusky home has become as much of a focal point of the investigation as the Penn State football locker room showers. Several alleged victims have testified they were assaulted in the finished bedroom in Sanduskys basement. The man identified in court records as Victim 9 said he was told to stay down there, eating meals and having contact with Sandusky mostly in the basement during several visits. Even though she was home, the boy almost never saw Sanduskys wife, Dottie. The grand jury presentment stated that [Victim 9] testified that on at least one occasion he screamed for help, knowing that Sanduskys wife was upstairs, but no one ever came to help him. Victim 10 said he never stayed the night, but described spending almost all of his time in the basement when he visited the Sandusky home, too. There, Sandusky would wrestle with him, and wrestling led to cuddling and oral sex, Victim 10 testified. Dottie Sandusky couldnt be reached at her home Wednesday. That basement has been mentioned several times by victims who say they were assaulted while staying overnight.

Allegations of rape have been mentioned before by assistant coach Mike McQueary, who said he witnessed it in a locker room shower in 2002, and other victims who said Sandusky attempted penetration but Victim 9 is the first to describe a detailed account of repeated rape by Sandusky.

On more than 16 occasions, prosecutors say, Sandusky tried to, or did, rape him. There were other sex acts, too, prosecutors said. Sandusky frequently told him that he loved and cared for him, the presentment reads. He also told the victim to keep these things a secret. Prosecutor McGettigan said during the arraignment that Victim 9 is also the most recent alleged victim.

Now 18, Victim 9 has accused Sandusky of abusing him over four years, from 2004 to 2008 a similar time period to Victim One, the Clinton County boy who launched the grand jury investigation in late 2008 by coming forward. So far, all of the alleged victims have been Second Mile youths. Victims 9 and 10 came forward after Sanduskys arrest was made public, then testified before the grand jury, talking about a pattern of abuse. Compulsive sexual behavior The most recent alleged victims both told the grand jury that Sandusky molested them public places Victim 9 claims a hotel pool, Victim 10 a campus pool. In the previous presentment, Sandusky was accused of assaulting boys in another place: the Penn State football teams locker room. In their own minds, men who assault children can justify their behavior and often convince themselves they are not taking significant risks, according to experts. A lot of this is driven by compulsive sexual behavior, said Ken Lanning, a retired FBI agent who specialized in child sexual abuse cases. This type of offender needs to turn their sexual fantasies into a reality. Child sex offenders often fall into a distinct pattern of behavior, said Maia Christopher, the executive director of the Association for the Treatment of Sexual Offenders. Their actions are going to be shaped not just by their relationship to the victim, but by their own nature of offending, Christopher said. If from their perspective and experience, its a place of isolation and if they believe their behaviors can be explained in other ways, they may perceive a greater sense of safety.

NEW: Sandusky posts $250,000 bail Thursday, according to his attorney He faces a preliminary hearing next week He also faces one new count of indecent assault and two counts of endangering a child's welfare Sandusky has maintained his innocence

(CNN) -- Former Penn State assistant coach Jerry Sandusky posted $250,000 bail Thursday following his arrest a day earlier over child sex charges involving two new alleged victims, according to his attorney. Sandusky was arrested Wednesday on four new counts of involuntary deviate sexual intercourse and two counts of unlawful contact with a minor, bringing the total number of alleged victims to 10.

He will be placed under house arrest and will be required to wear an electronic monitoring device, court officials have said. He'll also be restricted from contacting the alleged victims, possible witnesses, and must be supervised during any interactions with minors. "Today's criminal charges were recommended by a statewide investigating grand jury, based on evidence and testimony that was received following the initial arrest of Sandusky on November 5th," Pennsylvania Attorney General Linda Kelly said in a statement. Each count is punishable by up to 20 years in prison and $25,000 in fines.

The former coach also faces one new count of indecent assault and two counts of endangering a child's welfare, each punishable by up to seven years behind bars and $15,000 in fines. "As in many of the other cases identified to date, the contact with Sandusky allegedly fit a pattern of 'grooming' victims," Kelly said. "Beginning with outings to football games and gifts; they later included physical contact that escalated to sexual assaults." Sandusky, who maintains his innocence, will face a preliminary hearing at 8:30 a.m. Tuesday, where his alleged victims are set to testify. It is expected to be the first time the former coach will face his accusers in a courtroom.

The alleged victims -- identified by authorities as Victim 9 and Victim 10 -are believed to have encountered Sandusky at The Second Mile charity, a nonprofit organization he founded for underprivileged children. Victim 9 was between 11 and 12 years old when he first met the former coach in 2004. Sandusky allegedly gave the boy gifts and money, and took him to university football games, according to the grand jury report. The alleged victim testified he would make overnight visits to Sandusky's home and stay in a basement bedroom. He described a pattern of sexual assaults over a period of years, the grand jury said. "The victim testified that on at least one occasion he screamed for help, knowing that Sandusky's wife was upstairs, but no one ever came to help him," the report states. Sandusky allegedly met Victim 10, then about age 10, in 1997 after a counselor recommended the boy attend the charity "because of difficulties in his home life." That witness said Sandusky performed oral sex on him and indecently touched him in an outdoor pool on campus, according to the grand jury.

A grand jury report made public last month detailed 40 charges of rape and molestation against the former coach in a child sex abuse scandal that, at the time, involved eight alleged victims. Wednesday's announcement came on the heels of an attorney's statement on behalf of a 19-year-old man who stepped forward with claims that Sandusky gave him whiskey and sexually abused him, also in 2004. The man pointed to a single incident at the university's football building, according to attorney Chuck Schmidt of Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. He was 12 at the time and it allegedly occurred while he was staying overnight during Second Mile activities, the attorney said. Schmidt says he plans to file a lawsuit against Penn State, the charity and Sandusky in coming weeks.

Former Penn State coach Jerry Sandusky's wife has denied allegations that her husband sexually abused boys in their home and that she ignored cries for help. Sandusky was arrested Wednesday on 10 new counts of child sex abuse charges based on the testimony of two new alleged victims. The new allegations bring to 10 the number of alleged sex abuse victims.

Dottie Sandusky, who delivered a $50,000 check today to help bail her husband out of jail, was named in the testimony of one of the new alleged victims. Mrs. Sandusky has been implicated in the alleged sex abuse crimes by three of the men who claim to have been assaulted by her husband. The Pennsylvania attorney general's office, which is leading the investigation, would not confirm whether Dottie Sandusky was a target of their investigation or could face charges based on the testimony now available. "I'll just say that it remains an ongoing investigation, driven by evidence and fact," said a spokesman for the department. Wife in Penn State Scandal Implicated By Accusers The accuser, known in the grand jury presentment as Victim 9, told a grand jury that while he was allegedly being raped in the basement of the couple's home once, he called out for her help, knowing Dottie Sandusky was upstairs. But she never came down to help him, he said.

"I have been shocked and dismayed by the allegations made against Jerry, particularly the most recent one that a now young man has said he was kept in our basement during visits and screamed for help as Jerry assaulted him while I was in our home and didn't respond to his cries for help," she said. Jerry Sandusky, 67, is now charged with 50 counts relating to child molestation, and will appear in court for the first time to face his accusers on Tuesday. The preliminary hearing is expected to last several days. "I continue to believe in Jerry's innocence and all the good things he has done," Mrs. Sandusky said today. "I am asking everyone to please be reasonable and open-minded until both sides of this case are heard, and Jerry has the opportunity to prove his innocence.

The new allegations match a pattern of behavior described by many of the first eight accusers who said that Sandusky sexually assaulted them in the basement of his home during sleepovers. Victim 1 told the grand jury that Sandusky would come down to tell the child it was time to go bed, and then crack his back, blow on his stomach, and eventually sexually assault him. Victim 9, in the testimony released Wednesday, said that he was told by Sandusky to stay in the basement, where his wife rarely went, and to never go upstairs unless specifically told to do so. He claimed Sandusky brought him all of his meals to eat in the basement. The new accuser noted that there were empty bedrooms on the second floor of the residence, but he was never allowed to stay in them. Dottie Sandusky flatly denied all of the accusations. "No child who ever visited our home was ever forced to stay in our basement and fed there," she said. "All the kids who visited us ate with us and our kids and other guests when they were at our home." Mrs. Sandusky said she is saddened at the accusations of abuse in her home. "We don't know why these young men have made these false accusations, but we want everyone to know they are untrue," she said. The attorney for Victim 4, Ben Andreozzi, said that his client would also have more specific information on Dottie Sandusky's alleged involvement in the sex abuse. Victim 4 is set to testify at the hearing beginning Tuesday. Victim 7 may also implicate Mrs. Sandusky in his testimony during the hearing. In the grand jury presentment, the man testified that Dottie Sandusky tried to contact him in the weeks leading up to her husband's arrest, leaving him a voicemail saying it was "very important" that he call her back. He did not return the call.

For Jerry Sandusky's State College neighbors, the case is 'hard to handle'

CHRIS KNIGHT, The Patriot-News Private property signs line the driveway at Jerry Sandusky's house in this neighborhood outside State College.

Victim One had to change schools. Joe Paterno was in hiding. Mike McQueary was getting death threats. And Jerry Sandusky appeared jolly, smiling and greeting people in Penn State clothing as he shopped at stores and worked out at the gym.

Neighbors are snapping at each other, said Susan Strauss, who lives next door to the Sanduskys house on Grandview Road. This is just really hard for them to handle. Its a kind of betrayal, even though they didnt betray us. Once a quiet street that even veteran pizza delivery drivers had trouble finding, Grandview has become crowded with unmarked news vehicles and rubber-neckers who just cant resist taking a peek at the football legends modest two-story brick home, where several children have alleged they were molested. An aerial map of the neighborhood went viral last week when people realized Sanduskys backyard was adjacent to a playground and within walking distance from an elementary school. Road-closure signs block the narrow roads. Trespassers are tearing up the grass. Photographers are circling, waiting for the right shot. After Saturdays football game against Nebraska and after Sanduskys television interview last week, police showed up for protection. Far be it from me to get into Jerry Sanduskys head, said Robert Thompson, professor of popular culture at Syracuse University. I listened to that Bob Costas interview, and I dont know whats going on with him. Many people, Thompson said, disappear when theyre part of a big story. Because theyre savvy to the idea that they dont want to encounter people asking questions, he said. And thats seemingly the course Paterno, McQueary and many others have taken. But in the Sandusky neighborhood, media have figured out that Sandusky is out and about, playing with his dog in his yard or driving to local stores.

Last week, gawkers who said they were with the media but couldnt show identification knocked on Strauss door and asked her if her young son was OK. Sandusky being free has caused his neighbors to feel like they are the ones locked up in a jail. You would think the chain of command of people going into hiding might be the reverse of what were seeing, Thompson said. The person whos been accused is Jerry Sandusky. The ground zero of this story is Jerry Sandusky, so that does seem very strange. And in a quiet neighborhood, where most of the residents are elderly and there are seldom antics, the last 16 days have been difficult. Hes been out and about, Strauss said. I cant get away from it. Thats the hardest part. We walk across that lawn to get to the [school] bus. Strauss thought she had a lot in common with her neighbors of 13 years. They had mostly kept to themselves over the years, but they had bonded a little when, two years ago, Strauss finalized an adoption for three children from Ethiopia. The Sanduskys adopted six children and fostered several more over the years. In March, when news of the investigation broke, Strauss was among those who didnt believe it. She wrote Sandusky a note of support and gave it to his wife. She was about to ask the couple to watch her three children, as a gesture of support, while she traveled to Ethiopia this winter to adopt three more. Just thinking about that now makes her shudder.

Then I read the presentment, and I cried, she said. I cant get the image out of my head. There were just too many, and the way they were described ... it was too much to take in. Strauss, as many parents are, is using the tragedy as a life lesson for her kids. It opened up more of a conversation about boundaries, bad touches and what to do if an adult makes them feel uncomfortable. I dont feel unsafe, she said. Im nervous about the fact that this could go undetected for so long with such extreme behaviors.
