SEE 2113 4 (b) (c) Answer: Transform the block diagram in Figure 1 into its equivalent signal flow graph. (3 marks) Prove your answer in Q1(a) using Masons rule. (4 marks)

SEE 2113 5 QUESTION 2 (15 marks) (a) Consider the open loop systems shown in Figures 2(a) and 2(b).

Figure 2(b) (2 marks)

Calculate the time constant and settling time for both systems. Answer:

SEE 2113 6 (ii) Sketch the unit step response of the plants. (2 marks) Answer:

(iii)

Discuss and compare the performance both system in terms of the transient response and steady state value. (2 marks) Answer: In terms of transient response, system in Figure Q1b exhibits faster response than that of the system in Figure Q1a. In terms of steady state value, system in Figure Q1a provides the same output value as the input whereas for the system in Figure Q1b gives a reduced output value from an input.

SEE 2113 7 (iv) If both systems are put together in a cascade form, what will be the systems order now and name the output response of the new system. (1 mark) Answer:

(b)

Consider an electrical system which can be represented in a block diagram as shown in Figure 2(c).

SEE 2113 9 (ii) Calculate the values of undamped natural frequency (n), damping ratio () and gain K, of the closed-loop system. (1.5 marks) Answer: n2 = 66 n = 8.124 2 n = 7 = 0.431 Kn2 = 56 K = 0.848

(iii)

Predict the type of output response. Sketch the output response in time domain if the input R(s), is a unit step signal, u(t). (1 mark) Answer: Underdamped

SEE 2113 10 (iv) Calculate the settling time (Ts) and the peak time (Tp), of the system. (1 marks) Answer: Ts = 4/(n) = 1.143 s Tp = /[n(1-2)0.5] = 0.429 s 1 mark 1 mark

(v)

Based on a particular design requirement, the system has been further improved such that the new locations of the poles are at S1,2 = 5 j6 By comparing the original and new locations of the poles, what can we say about the new performance of the system in terms of Ts and Tp? (1.5 marks) Answer: Ts will be reduced Tp will be increased
