Order 2 Stage Name Pre-operational Age Range 2-7 Skills Learned The development of language and its use, also the child uses what is called egocentric thought which means the child see the world from their perspective and thinks everyone else also sees it from this perspective. They start to think logically and get outside of themselves, and move away from the egocentrism characteristic of the second stage. At this stage they only know the world through touching, shaking, sucking, and chewing very basic primal actions. Also they do not comprehend object permanence, they are not aware that objects out of sight still exist. Rational and abstract ways of thinking are expanded Skills Not Yet Learned A child does not have the ability to understand the principle of conservation which means they do not grasp that the amount, volume, or length does not change because the shape or configuration changes in size. The child cannot fully comprehend abstract or hypothetical thinking, also they will not understand for a number of years, such as volume and weight. Person has little ability to understand things in a symbolic way

If the person is allowed to explore his environment, then he will learn to be self-sufficient The child experiences increasing competency in social interactions, academic skills. This stage focuses on developing close relationships with the resolution of crisis. Person finds ways to start new actions confusion then the possibility of going down the wrong road and having difficulty in relationships will be established during the stage. Person feels disappointed and unhappy with decisions in life and opportunities missed If parents are to controlling the child cannot assert themselves, or it not enough parental control the child will be demanding and controlling. If the child does not progress then he or she will face difficulties that lead to feelings of failure and inadequacy. If unable to resolve crisis during this stage, this could result in the fear of relationships and feeling of loneliness. If not in good health mentally and physical, may not be able to learn new skills and hobbies.
