2.B) |10 pts| Determine the linear momentum oI the ball just beIore it collides with the
rigid surIace.
2.C) |20pts| Draw the impulse and momentum diagram Ior the ball just beIore, during
and just aIter impact.
2.D) |30 pts| Determine the linear momentum oI the ball just aIter its impact with the
rigid surIace.
2.E) |20 pts| Determine the magnitude oI the impulse exerted on the ball during impact.
2.F) |10 pts| Determine the maximum height oI rebound h' reached by
the ball.

PROBLEM 3 (Crader: Ramos)

Objective 20 pts]: Modified True or False. For questions 3.A to 3.D, write 'TRUEiI the statement is true
and 'FALSEiI the statement is Ialse. II your answer is Ialse, modiIy the underlined words to make the
statement true.

3.A) |5 pts|The work done by the Iorce oI gravity on an object is positive when the object moves down.
Problem solving 80 pts]:A 5kg block B was placed on top oI a 10 kg
block A along a rough inclined surIace, as shown in the Iigure. The
system was then released Irom rest. It was observed that block A moved
relative to the inclined surIace.
ReIerring to the problem statement above, answer questions 1.A) to 1.C).
1.A) |30 pts| Show that block B slipped relative to block A.
1.B) |30 pts|Determine the absolute acceleration oI block A.
1.C)|25 pts|Determine the absolute acceleration oI block B.

The coeIIicients oI static and kinetic Iriction between block A and block
B are 3
s
0.12 and 3
k
0.10; respectively. The coeIIicient oI kinetic
Iriction between block A and the inclined plane is 3
k

3.B) |5 pts|The work done by a spring on an object attached to (or in contact with) the spring is positive
when the spring is returning to its undeIormed position.
3.C) |5 pts| The kinetic energy oI a moving object is always positive.
3.D) |5 pts| II the potential energy (associated with gravity) increases, the work done by the Iorce oI gravity
is positive.

Problem solving 80 pts]: A 5 kg block is released Irom rest at position 1 and is stopped by two springs A
and B at position 2, as shown in the Iigure below. Position 1 is at a height habove spring A while position 2 is
when springs A and B have achieved their maximum deIlections. The Iree lengths oI the outer spring A
(longer) and inner spring B (shorter) are 400 and 300 mm, respectively. The spring constant oIspring A is 2
kN/m, and spring B has a spring constant oI 10 kN/m. The height h is 500 mm and the maximum deIlectionx
oI spring A was observed to be greater than 100 mm (i.e., the block will establish contact with spring B).

ReIerring to the problem statement above, answer questions 3.E) to 3.K).
3.E) |10 pts|Determine the kinetic energy oI the block at position 1.
3.F) |10 pts| Determine the kinetic energy oI the block at position 2.
3.G)|10 pts| Express the work done by the longer spring A on the block, in terms oI x, Irom position 1 to
position 2.
3.H) |10 pts| Express the work done by the shorter spring B on the block, in terms oI xIrom position 1 to
position 2.
3.I) |10 pts| Express the work done by gravity on the block, in terms oI x, Irom position 1 to position 2.
3.J)|10 pts| Express the change in total potential energy oI the block, in terms oI x Irom position 1
to position 2.
3.K)|20 pts| Determine the maximum deIlection, x, oI the spring A.
