As Scribner implies in her article, Literacy in Three Metaphors, literacy is used

by everyone, yet understood by no one. The present denitions, in her opinion, are either too general or too specic; this is because society as a whole is literate (even those societies which dont seem literate) and each individual has there own specic literacy. Where is the middle ground? Is there one? I believe we must dene the word literacy in separate terms and therefore allow it to have, at least, a double meaning as so many other words in our English language. The rst denition for literacy, societal literacy, is the ability to comprehend and utilize the acceptable method of communication in your own culture often achieved by experience. Narrowing it down,

individual literacy becomes an intellectual concept where a person may consider themselves literate in a certain aspect if they are capable of understanding how they are using it, be able to use it, and have such an understanding that they may be able to teach another person how to use it.

I would like to think that I have literacies (in the plural) by this age. Then again,

seeing as I doubt its ever possible to become fully literate, I must identify my partial literacies. Strangely enough, in high school I was President of the Media and Technology Club. I say this as strange because I was not considered literate in either of

the two major components when I began. I was elected to the position because I was literate in organization and communication skills, though as I went along I became literate in my responsibilities. To achieve this knowledge I had to spend a lot of time around people who knew what they were doing and talking about; just like going to China and experiencing their language and culture to even begin to understand them.

Subheading the M&T club were the Robotics, ACAD Update, Graphic Design, and Webcast - I had a lot to learn. Because Webcast was our major money maker I worked mostly with them. Our most important project was producing live webcasts of the footballs games including commercials, announcers, etc. To become even minutely literate in media, I sacriced every Friday night in order to lm the games. Personal example

with the help of my ingenious friend, I became better at understanding what shots looked good, what they were called, and how to use the camera. Afterwards I would have to upload the games in order for the football coaches to review them for their own benets. Expanding even more I learned to use video editing programs and make highlight videos. I became literate enough that a news channel had me lm our high school games for them.
