HFM Investment Advisors Inc.
will host its second-annual coat
drive on Dec. 17 from 1 to 3 p.m. It
is currently collecting coats, and,
this year, is working with Birches
Elementary School, Holy Family
Church, Margaret E. Heggan
Public Library, Healthtrax and
Kid Academy.
These are all locations that
have drop-off boxes for the coats.
There is a goal of 1,200 coats this
year, and, so far, 800 have been col-
lected.
We used to do different com-
munity activities, Michael Pal-
lozzi, owner of HFM said. They
were never as large-scale as the
coat drive though.
The company had to decide
where to donate the coats. It
began working with Angels of
God. Pallozzi was also friends
with the principal at Birches Ele-
mentary School, and his daughter
had to do a community service
project for her confirmation.
Everyone came together to sup-
port the coat drive.
Last year, HFM had a goal of
collecting 500 coats and ended up
with 1,000.
We started collecting in Sep-
tember, and we have 800 coats so
far, Pallozzi said.
Pallozzi thought the coat drive
would be a good idea because of
the weather and the economy.
In 2009, we had a very cold
winter and the economy was hor-
rible, Pallozzi said. We spoke
with Angels of God to see if it
was a good idea. They said that

Mayor Barbara Wallace held
her first Constituents Service
Day last week. The event was
something Wallace campaigned
on to help her connect with the
needs of the community and find
out what residents' concerns are.
It went pretty well. I had eight
people show up, Wallace said.
There were really no major com-
plaints. A lot of the issues were
about beautification and con-
cerns for roads. I got to listen to
their concerns and issues that
were on their minds.
Wallace said the event was a
way that residents could also get
to know their mayor.
They get to meet their new
mayor and see what Im about,
Wallace said.
Wallace said that she wants to
alternate the meetings times so
that everyone who wants to at-
tend has a chance to. The first
meeting was held in the after-
noon.
I want to assess and talk to my
team on how to plan these going
forward, Wallace said.
Wallace said that everyone in
the town expressed how much
they liked living in the township
and what good services it offers.
She also said that, when asked
about having the council join in
on meetings, she hadnt thought
about it, but that could be a possi-
bility.
I just want to be honest and
upfront with constituents, Wal-
lace said. We cant fix every-
thing, but, if there are other av-
enues to get solutions,
I want to help people with
that. I can direct them to other ve-
hicles in the state or county,
where they may not understand
where to go. I can say to them you
may want to look here or suggest
another avenue.
Wallace listens to community

parents who lost their jobs, who
normally wouldnt come there,
were coming in because they
couldnt afford to buy coats for
their kids.
Last year, all the coats that
were collected were displayed in
the conference room of HFM.
This year, it has been donating
the coats as it gets them.
Angels of God said they are
going out as fast as they are com-
ing in, Pallozzi said.
This year, on the last day of the
drive, Dec. 17, from 1 to 3 p.m.,
kids will be able to come to the
HFM office and enjoy cookies and
hot chocolate while meeting
Santa and Mrs. Claus.
Attendees can also bring coats
that day to be donated.

in our opinion
I
ts hard to believe, but the holiday
season is nearing an end. And that
means that a lot of holiday drives
are about to wrap up, too.
Over the past several weeks, weve
had the honor of listing a great num-
ber of your efforts to help those in
need this holiday season. In our 13
South and Central Jersey publica-
tions, weve published news about ef-
forts to collect food, clothes, blankets,
toys and items for animal shelters. We
hope that your drive, so far, has been
successful.
But now the season is coming to a
close.
If you have been able to help, we
thank you. A great number of non-
profit and charitable organizations de-
pend on the kindness of the general
public during the holiday season to
make ends meet throughout the year.
Thanks to your generosity, many peo-
ple will be helped.
If you havent helped, time is run-
ning short. Lets be honest, the holiday
season is the easiest time of the year
to lend a helping hand because there
are so many groups and organizations
collecting items and donations. You
have bell ringers at numerous stores.
As we mentioned, you read about
countless opportunities in our news-
paper. It seems that just about every-
where you go, theres a way to help
someone.
You dont have to give until it hurts.
Many small donations add up quickly.
Pocket change, a spare blanket, a shirt
that youve grown weary of wearing
these are things you wont miss, but
that can truly help someone else.
So lets end this holiday season with
a bang. If everyone who reads a Sun
newspaper well into six figures
makes one small donation this holiday
season, the impact will be simply over-
whelming.
Almost over
Holidays are almost behind us, but theres still time to make a difference
Time short to help others
If everyone who reads a Sun newspa-
per will make even a small donation
this year, it will make a huge differ-
ence in many lives.
Census, scandal, AC and World AIDS Day
People fleeing New Jersey
for Pa. for many reasons
People from New Jersey are moving to
Philadelphia in massive numbers, a trend
noted in recent Census figures and in a
highly detailed report in the Star-Ledger.
The 2010 census said former New Jer-
seyans account for 80 percent of Pennsyl-
vanias 25,770 gain in residents from other
states that year. Pennsylvania, overall, was
the biggest destination state in the North-
east last year.

Medford mayor
resigns amid scandal
Medford Mayor Chris Myers has re-
signed. According to Township Manager
Christopher Schultz, Myers resignation
letter was delivered to the township clerk
Dec. 5 and took effect immediately.
Sometime in October, a man claiming to
be an escort posted a photo of what ap-
pears to be Myers in his underwear and
also stated he has a photo of the mayors ID
card. The photos were posted anonymous-
ly on a website that is no longer available.

World AIDS Day: A
personal price
Ill never forget the last time I saw my
uncle Patrick Slane. I had just returned
from a visit to Scranton, Pa.
He was lying on the couch, and the
moans he was emitting were chilling he
could barely breathe. After years of suffer-
ing from HIV, it was finally catching up to
him, and from all indications, the end was
near.
Days earlier, I found him aimlessly walk-
ing around the house. He was completely
demented and had no idea who he was,
who I was or where he was. When I re-
turned from Pennsylvania, things ap-
peared even worse. The television was on
loudly.
He had his favorite drink, a chocolate
milkshake, sitting on the table. But he was
struggling to take in air.
He was going to die soon.

Inspired by reading the book
The Lady in the Box, fifth-grade
students at Hurffville Elementary
School are doing their own part
in giving back to the homeless.
The fifth-graders are taking part
in a Kindness in a Box project
that runs through Dec. 16.
During Thanksgiving week,
teachers shared The Lady in the
Box, by Ann McGovern, with the
students. The story is about a re-
lationship that is formed between
two children and a homeless
woman. After reading the book,
the teachers presented the stu-
dents with The Kindness in the
Box idea to encourage students
and families to get involved with
making life a little bit better for
people who are homeless.
Students and families who
were interested were asked to fill
shoeboxes with items that might
be appreciated by the homeless.
Suggested items included travel-
size toiletries, gloves, hats,
scarves, wipes, non-perishable
food items, hand/footwarmers
and more. Students were asked to
be creative. Many students chose
to decorate their shoeboxes, and
there was no limit on the number
of boxes a student or family could
contribute.
The school has displayed a
giving table in the fifth-grade
pod where they have stacked the
boxes for all of the students to
see. As of last week, 53 completed
boxes have been donated, with
many more expected. Last year,
the school did a similar drive that
yielded nearly 100 box donations.
As they did a year ago, the teach-
ers will take the boxes to a home-
less shelter in Camden.
It truly is a season of giving,
and a remarkable opportunity for
our kids to feel like they can
make an important difference,
Gail McGinty, a fifth-grader said.

What do Bengal tigers the state
of Oregon and Omaha Beach
have in common? Theyre among
the subjects Birches Elementary
School fifth-grade students have
chosen to write non-fiction books
about as part of a literacy project.
Assisted by their teacher, Bet-
tiann Young, the students are
doing everything from research
to writing to page design.
The project started with the
students selecting whatever sub-
ject they wanted. They then used
the schools Netbooks to do re-
search while also doing more
work on their home computers
before starting the books. They
created dummy books on note-
book paper before starting on the
full books. The books include a
color cover, a table of contents,
hand-drawn pictures, printed
photos, a glossary and an index.
Students were required to have
six terms in the glossary and 16
index items. The only other re-
quirement was six different text
features (i.e. captions, pull-quotes,
sidebars, graphs, maps).
The 28-page hardbound books
and their protective plastic covers
were provided thanks to a Wash-
ington Township Education
Foundation grant. Once com-
plete, the students will read their
books to an audience of fellow
students. The audience will be de-
termined by their subject matter.
