Explore and learn about thermometers and what they are used for!

What is a thermometer?

A thermometer measures temperature. Temperature is measured in Fahrenheit or Celsius. A thermometer contains mercury which is the red liquid in the thermometer. When the temperature rises so does the mercury, when the temperature falls so does the mercury.

Can you find 100 degrees Fahrenheit on the thermometer? Color the thermometer red all the way up to 100 degrees Fahrenheit. Practice reading different temperatures on the thermometer!

Make Your Own Thermometer!

Materials: clear, plastic bottle (11oz. water bottle works) water rubbing alcohol clear plastic drinking straw modeling clay food coloring

Procedure: Fill about 1/4 of the bottle full with equal parts of water and rubbing alcohol. Add a few drops of food coloring.( I like Red) Put the straw in the bottle, but don't let it touch the bottom. Use the modeling clay to seal the neck of the bottle, so the straw stays in place. Place your hands on the bottom and record what happens on log page. Explanation: What happened? Just like any thermometer, the mixture expands when it is warmed up. The heat made the mixture not fit into the bottle. As the alcohol expanded the colored mixture moves up through the straw. If the bottle were to get really hot the water would pour out of the straw.

Experiment: What is hot and What is Cold?

Hypothesis:

Observation:

Experiment: What is hot and What is Cold? Materials: Two bowls One with ice water One with hot water Thermometer Worksheet Timer; stopwatch
Ask students which bowl is hot and which is cold. Ask students if they think the temperatures of the two bowls will be the same. Have students make a hypothesis and write it on the worksheet.

Procedure: Put the two bowls side by side and have your thermometer ready. Place thermometer in hot bowl for 1 min. Let the thermometer rest and record temperature in degrees Fahrenheit. Place in cold bowl for 1 minuet. Record temperature. Discuss how the two temperatures are different. Tell them to look at their recorded temperatures. Notice how the red mercury lines in both thermometers are at different levels. This means they are at different temperatures. Ask the students which temperature is colder? Hotter? Explain the lower the temperature or mercury level the colder it is, and the hotter it is the higher the temperature or mercury level will be. Repeat this in multiple locations (ex outside & inside; in refrigerator & outside of refrigerator)
