Goodbye 2011
An entire year has flown past us even as we stand befuddled by the rapid flux of events that have dominated the entire country. 2011 has been a very eventful year, whipping up peoples sentiments and unifying them for a common cause. Awareness has dawned on every Indians mind that unless we do something about the all pervading corruption, each one of us is going to be affected by it sometime or the other in our lifetime. The awakening and the peoples uprising are occurrences that will go down in the annals of Indian history as events that triggered a massive attitudinal change across the length and breadth of the nation. While no concrete accomplishment can be said to have been made, the fact that the Lok Pal bill has been taken up for Parliamentary debate itself gives us some hope. The draft tabled in the parliament seems to belie the hopes of many Anna activists and the people of India. Yet it will serve as a precursor to impel a massive overhaul of a corrupt system which will indeed come about eventually, though right now the possibility seems bleak. It is a difficult combat zone and both parties need to be flexible to arrive at a satisfactory bill that will protect the freedom and safety of all Indians and help in bringing culprits to the book, to whichever category or group they belong. I dont think anyone should be exempt from any provision laid down in the bill. The comprehensive Lok Pal Bill has come about after consensus of people from different walks of life. The parliament should adopt it in its entirety. It seems to be an idealistic thought but miracles can happen! 2011 has been a year of scams when one scam after another erupted and shook the nation. It was also the year when peopled involved in the 2G scam, CWGs scam and other such corrupt deals were sent to Tihar jail. There have been elections in some states and formation of new governments which brought forth new hopes and expectations. The country, especially Tamilnadu was thrown into a quandary when Rajnikant took ill and had to be taken to Singapore for treatment. Sonia Gandhi is another high flier who had to be admitted to Sloan Kettering, New York, for an unknown ailment. Salman Khan came out of a debilitating condition after a surgery abroad. Dev Anand, who has been in the filmdom for over 65 years passed away in London as December unfolded. A few months ago, India lost a world renowned artist in M.F. Hussain. Is death raised a lot of inconvenient questions. The year also saw India winning the World Cup and being a venue for F1 Motor car race, putting India on the global platform as a country which can now host international events. A recent development that raises hope that people of India will now be watchful and also participate more in the affairs of the country, is the public debate that was held in the Calcutta Club recently. This gives hope to the people that all is not lost. There seems to be scope for emerging out of the political impasse which has currently assailed the country. Theres hope yet. 2012 is not going to be any less happening than 2011 has been. There have been accidents, bomb blasts, strife and riots that made news. Amidst these tumultuous swirling , a cute little bud made its way into the First Bollywood family, bringing forth smiles to people who set their eyes on the princess. A sign that we are moving toward better times. The path seems to be strewn with thorns. But we know how to remove the thorns and move ahead!

Ciao!

ndians eat, breathe and sleep cinema. Films are a part of the staple diet Indians grow on. Globalization has thrown the doors of the cinema wide open for a huge exchange of ideas, films, music, actors and audience across the

world. Much to the delight of Indians residing overseas, Indian films are being screened in theatres abroad to satiate their needs of belonging to their roots. Not only are global Indians welcoming Indian films, but many cross country themes form a part of the international cinema scenario today, which are shot both in an Indian language and in English. Indian stars have found opportunities abroad as much as foreign directors and actors have garnered their fair share of experiences in filmmaking in India. Amazing technological breakthroughs have happened in the world of films. Social media and hectic promotional campaigns have played a major role in promoting films. Yethas the Indian cinema really progressed in the quality of content, characterization, actors, music and everything else that goes into the making of films? Behind all the hype and high drama, have films lost their quality of keeping the audience engrossed, touching their hearts and leaving an indelible impression in their minds? What do Cinema Celebs have to say? Lizzy Priyadarshan Entrepreneur, Head, Four Frames Entertainment Studios, Owner, Kerala Strikers, Celebrity Cricket League I like to watch a film for the sake of entertainment. I dont like to watch a tragic film that makes you weepy eyed. Looking around us, today most people seem to have some problems in their lives. We go to a theatre expecting to sink our worries and tensions and refresh our minds. Cinema should

c| 8

December 2011
make you feel good. If there is an added social message or educational value, all the better. But it is the feel good factor after you emerge from the theatre that is most important. The film must be visually pleasing with excellent contributions from the cinematographer, art director, costume designer etc. The idea is to spend two hours happily watching something pleasing to our senses. Films like Thulabaram were great during their times. After watching it I cried for two days. But today the concept has changed. Even watching some of the films today brings tears to your eyes. But it doesnt have to be an out and out emotional drama. I enjoy both AR Rahman type of music as well as Ilayarajas compositions. I liked Kolaveri too. It is catchy. You cannot expect great lyrics from an ordinary man, as is picturised on Kolaveri. Music should have the quality that will make you listen to it again and again, without ennui setting in. Of course if you have both great lyrics and music like the songs from Jodha Akbar that is the best thing that can happen. Great music is timeless. The younger generation too enjoys music of yester years. Once created, music must have an everlasting quality. We can never forget songs like Chinna chinna aasai. These beautiful songs stay with you for ever. Karthika Nair, Actor The Indian audience has grown. People are more mature and they need content. You cannot take them for granted. Hence a movie cannot be a hit unless it has a strong storyline, screenplay, characters,

Eves Times

producer, director, actors and excellent technology. Given all these ingredients, even if the actors are new comers the movies do well. Another good thing that has happened is Indian cinema now is its international reach. Like Hollywood, Bollywood and even Kollywood is equally popular. Many movies from Kollywood are being adapted and remade in Bollywood. The directors rely on good stories

and not the stars to carry the movie on their shoulders. Also, today fewer movies are being made. My mom has acted in 150 films, which is remarkable. Today if you do ten movies, it will compare to having done 150 films! Theres a lot of box office hype about movies. Time was when actors used to act free if they got good banners or directors. Cinema was then a passion. Today

strong roles.

December 2011

Talking about Kolaveri Di, hailing from Mumbai, I am happy that a southern song has become nationally popular. Like A R Rahman, if our music directors like Harris Jeyraj and GV Prakash get international platforms, it will be great. Kolaveri became popular due to international exposure. Arun Vijay, Actor & Producer Indian cinema is witnessing a healthy trend with the explosion of multiplexes. Earlier movies had to have a long run of a hundred days or more for collections. Now collections are being made during the initial 2 -3 weeks. We need more multiplexes in the cities and semi urban areas. The initial audience, a majority of whom are youngsters, comes to the theatre primarily for entertainment. If the youngster who watches a movie says it is not good, the family audience backs away. The success of a film depends upon how the youngsters enjoy the movie. Hence , films are being made targeting the young audience. There are good films but sometimes they have not collected well. No one knows why. Films like Pasa Malar with a strong story do click sometimes. But the competition is fierce and eventually we have to make our moolah. There are several obstacles to making a film. Logistics is important. Even getting out the completed film, getting a theatre for screening, the time of release etc are huge constraints that need a lot of planning. Many films are in the labs without getting a theatre for release. The discrimination

it has become a profession. There has been a stupendous advancement of film technology that has improved the quality of films. As for women actors, there is a new support system in the industry that prevents them from being exploited. Films are still more hero oriented. But they want good women actors

to support whereas during my moms days the woman actor was just a glamour factor. Heroine oriented movies like Mudhal mariyadai were rare. Today heroines have a chance to play integral roles in movies. Also women actors do not sacrifice their standards just to wrangle roles. They look for

c| 10

December 2011
between big banner films and small budget films must be done away with. Producers forum must do something about this. For e.g., when movies of big stars are released during Pongal, other movies must get screens after at least 2 or 3 weeks. Many big producers are nowhere today. They should be given opportunities to come back. Today the young audience looks for fast movies with a lot of action, comedy and thrill. I believe that a film must have a good script in a commercial sort of way and not just be made for the sake of entertainment alone. I am producing my third film, Thadaiyara thaaka, which has been a great learning experience. As an actor I had a different view. After becoming a producer my perception has changed. Actors must understand the pains of producers. The music scenario has undergone a lot of remarkable changes. Youngsters now like peppy, foot-tapping numbers. Producers have to go with the trend. We have to satisfy the audience that comes to the theatre. This trend will eventually change as is bound to happen in the cycle of filmmaking and film music. I am glad that Tamil filmdom is producing huge films like Sivaji, Endiran etc. Other producers have to work hard to compete with big films. Cinema is a big industry. South Indian films are comparable to world standards in technology. However, in order to excel, Tamil Nadu needs a film city like the Ramoji Rao film city in Hyderabad. If I want to shoot in a railway station, I need to seek permission from the Railways. All this is time consuming and expensive. Lets hope that Tamil Nadu will soon have an amazing film city that can give great momentum to films being made in the south. Janani Iyer, Model & Actor Cinema today has become more commercial. If you look at movies back then, there was a connect to the audience. The audience took back the memory of the movie when they left the cinema hall. Today you just watch a movie which is entertaining at that moment

Eves Times
of time and when you walk out of the theatre, the movie is forgotten. I would like to do a period film. I would also like to do a role like that of Sridevis in Moondram Pirai. If you look at the western movies, which many feel influence Indian cinema, they are basically of two types. Some are just commercial but there are some movies based on a strong storyline and characters. As for lyrics, changes are bound to happen according to the trend, based on what the youth likes. I liked Kolaveri; it is a fun song.

there are two genre of film that sells Romance and action. The more subtle and sensitive the romance is, the better are the prospects of the movie being successful VTV, Mayakkam Enna, Paruthiveeran, etc. The movies revel in making the male character the protagonist. The movies are more often than not told from a males point of view. Hence, the male members are shown as victims of circumstances and of the fairer sex. Having said that, the depth of the emotions is not dealt with in detail like what was there in yesteryear films of a Balachander or a Bheem Singh. That is again probably a reflection of the mindset of people today. There are no longer the deeper emotions and everything is superficial and shallow. Where are the family drama which defined the 80s (Visu type of films)? Where are the films that had sibling relationships

Cinema As I see it
C
inema is a part and part of Indian culture. Indians grow on coffee (tea), food and cinema. Cinema being the most powerful medium that snares the attention of almost the entire country, it has a great influence on the lives and times of Indian citizens. Hence it is a huge responsibility for all cinema professionals to use this remarkably influential medium to convey the right attitude and values to the masses. Despite this, and the sporadic attempts by the censor board to intervene, there are no strong media rules and regulations to keep the visual media on the right track. Indian film world continue to churn out movies by the dozens, the total number of movies being produced in a year running to thousands across the country. Yet, Indian films end up leaving a huge void- in the culture, in the minds of the viewers and in their basic purpose of entertainment. Or do they? Here are a few citizens who express their views on the present trend in films and film music today. Vijay Gopalan, Chartered Accountant Cinema across ages has always reflected the mental and emotional state of the society at that point in time. In that context, todays cinema is very clearly targeted at the youth population. It is evident that

c| 12

December 2011
as the central theme (like Pasa Malar and a whole lot of other films)? Today, our perception of deep emotions would have been thrashed as shallow in the 60s and 70s. Romance hinges on fight between boy and girl and how they patch up rather than showing the myriad finer details of a relationship. Guess that is what evolution in any industry does. No point in blaming the film makers alone, for deep down, that may also reflect each of our mindset making it easier for ourselves to identify with such films. This just a by and large analysis and there are still those great films that break the trend and remind us of what we are capable of churning out. But these seem to the exception which only makes the rule stronger. The sense of music is more contemporary. Lyrics that is more colloquial rather than those that follow the poetic grammar. Tunes that are western than those that exemplify our rich Indian musical culture. But the sounding of all these tunes, make the songs of today more pleasurable to the ears than ever before. Nothing wrong in this changing trend. But we may soon reach a time where Indian music will be equal to western music and we may lose our individuality that great composers like MSV, Ilaiyaraja and Rahman have strived to show the world. J.Ramkumar, Project Head in a Private Company, Holland Listening to film music today one wonders whether our taste has degraded! Gone are the days when music was very pleasing to the ears. Today most film music

Eves Times
evolved a lot in the past few years, be it the storyline of the movie, dialogues or the special effects being used in the movies. The youngsters today prefer more of realistic cinema than the melodrama of old age movies. Also there is increased affinity for entertaining movies than movies with social message. I think the Indian cinema at present is trying its best to meet the Hollywood standards to please the youth, though copying the storyline of Hollywood movies is not something appreciable. However when it comes to use of technology Hollywood movies do set the benchmark. Indian cinema has to go a long way when it comes to matching with Hollywood standards. D.Premkumar, Software Engineer The storyline in most movies is based on a love story told in various ways; but they dont always give a positive message. Cinema has played a role in encouraging youngsters to enter into romantic relationships. Even school kids feel bad if they dont fall in love; which leads to a lot of emotional and physical impact on youngsters and sometimes even abuse. Most movies often depict unrealistic fight scenes which we dont encounter in our real lives. Another trend that has caught on is the remake from other language movies. I feel the storyline of a film should focus more on social issues, conveying positive messages to movie lovers and encourage youngsters to think on the lines of improving the society and the nation. Im not trying to criticize all the movies but my opinion is mass media can contribute to

has words or sentences that do not carry any meaning. Music can be composed with the most modern gadgets today. That seems to be the only positive aspect of cinema music. The lyrics in most film songs leave much to be desired. If people accuse me of belonging to the older generation, I am not one to agree. I am still young at heart and love to listen to fast music. I enjoy songs like Oh Podu which are different from traditional music. As for movies, I am not a film person. I love to watch comedy movies. Unfortunately the days of Nagesh and Cho m V K Ramaswamy are over. Today even comedy tracks are obscene with dialogues that have double meaning. Despite all this, there is still hope! Komal Gandhi, Student I think Indian cinema has

Eves Times

December 2011

meaningful content related to the development of nation. If at all films have to do a remake, they can follow the examples of Hollywood movies and improvise upon the storyline instead of plagiarizing completely and focusing only on the glamour element .Recently I saw Ra one which seems like a Hindi remake of Terminator and Enthiran. Also, I disliked the way they projected the Tamil language in the movie. Many movies today are based on city life and the modern youth whereas realistic movies dealing with the issues faced by the common man are rare. Quality wise, Indian movies have had a remarkable metamorphosis, especially in technology. Visual effects as well as sound engineering are of amazing quality. Cinematography is excellent. The way our movie technicians have expressed their talent and creativity is just awesome. Indian films have proved that they can match Hollywood movies in terms of technology, visual and audio effects. As far as treatment of women is concerned, I dont see any

issue here as there have been few movies that show women or the differently abled being exploited. In fact I appreciate the manner in which some filmmakers have depicted the differently abled, especially throwing light on their talent. I love the oonam oonam, song sung by Vadivelu which carried a good message. Women actors are used by movies to improve their box office collections. After all, cinema is a commercial medium and nobody wants to

take a risk that can lead to a loss. However, if they can avoid too much of skin show, movies can attract all age groups. I am not comfortable with the lyrics or the storyline of movies which revolve around the subject of love and romance. I feel like challenging the intellect of a director or a producer and ask them, Cant you make a hit movie without a song? Though we seem to follow the footsteps of the western cinema, we are still not able to make a remarkable movie like Babys Day Out or 007. We are not able to make a hit movie without songs, like a Hollywood movie. I like songs with lyrics that inspire such as the motivational songs in Rajnikants or Vijays movies. I love to listen to them on my way to office. They give me a lot of positive energy.

e live in the era of Kolaveri. Where technology is everything. You dont even need to be trained in music or even know how to sing. Today, lyrics dont mean anything. On the other hand lyrics explicitly use aggressive, sexist words, or impart discrimination, gender bias, racism and casteism,

almost challenging Human Rights. Your feet go ballistic as the music is plugged on and then you just walk out without a hint of lingering melody ringing in your ears. The foot tapping music was a transient distraction, nothing more! Time was when music was soul stirring and the lyrics found their way deep down into the

crevices of your mind such that during certain occurrences in your life, unknown to you they sprang up and played in your mind, a song appropriate to the situation you were in. When you were assailed by angst the words Enge Nimmadhi automatically sprung up and unleashed the cascade of tears that wet your cheeks. Or when

your eyes fell on a beautiful damsel who set your heart fluttering, songs like Chaudvin ka chaand, or Teri pyari pyari soorat ko.., Kaun hai jo sapnon me aaya,, mere sapnon ki raani kab, Aayiram ninaivu aayiram kanavu, Pournami nilavil pani vizhzhum.. would just eject from the tape of your memory kit and linger in your lips. We carry memories of the everlasting melodies of yester years when we go to exotic locales and forget ourselves as we become one with the landscape and savour the natures bounty around us. At such moments it is not surprising when our mind sings, Yeh shaam mastani, or Odum megangale or Chittukuruvi mutham koduthu. If you have fallen in love your voice automatically whispers , Love birds love birds.. thaka dimi tha or Bhanwara bada naadan hai, Enna enna vaarthaigalo, and unfortunately if you have lost in love your cries reverberate through the lyrics, Mera sundar sapna beet gaya Ajeeb daastan hai yeh, Kadalil tholvi petra kanni oruthi. Songs like Pyar kiya to darna kya and Khullam khulla pyar karenge hum dono gave young lovers the courage to confront their parents admitting their love. Of course we also danced to songs like Mera naam chin chin too, Aaja aaja mein hoon pyar tera, Shola jo bhadke, Aaj kal tere mere, Lekar hum deewaana dil, Jaane jaa dhoondtha phir raha, Jab andhera hota hai, Om shanti om, in Hindi or Aada varalam, Avanukku enna, in Tamil. The golden era of Indian film music has given us some of the best songs of love that reflect the pure joy of unflinching , deep love. Songs such as Teri ankhon ke siva duniya mein kya rakha hai, Mere mehboob tujhe mere muhabbat ki kasam, Yaad kiya dil ne kaha, Naalam Naalam thirunalam, Naan pesa nenaippadellam nee pesa vendum, and innumerable other songs that united two minds in eternal love. Cinema has given everlasting lullabies that continue to caress many infants to sleep. Songs such as Mein gaaun tum so jaao, Gudiya hamse root rahogi , or in Tamil , Muthana muthallavo, Athaimadi methaiyadi or even Kanne kalai maane, gave new mothers a repertoire from which they could draw out a song to soothe their babies to sleep. Songs like Wakt ne kiya kya haseen sitam, Yeh kya hua, Zindagi kaisi hai paheli haari, Yeh shaam kuch ajeeb hai in Hindi and Manidhan maari vittan, Nilave ennidam mayagade were our companions during somber moments of our life. Filmdom has produced some of the greatest singers of our time. Even today Vande maataram, from Anand Math sung by Lata Mangeshkar brings out goose pimples and whips up the dormant patriotism reposing in our bosoms. The priceless wealth of music bequeathed to us by Lata Mangeshkar, Mohammad Rafi, Kishore Kumar, Manna Dey, Asha Bhonsle in Hindi and T M Soundararajan, A.M. Raja, P.Susheela have enriched our lives, gave us solace during our saddest moments, gave us the strength to vanquish

December 2011
constraining circumstances, gave meaning to our friendships and strengthened bonds of love with our near and dear. These singers crept into our lives stealthily like a wisp of fragrance and remain in our memories as mellifluous melodies that add a dash of inner happiness to our souls. Music directors like Lakshmikanth Pyarelal, S.D.Burman, O P Nayyar, Shankar Jaikishan, Ramachandra, R.D.Burman, Hemant Kumar, Salil Choudhury, M.S. Viswanathan & Ramamoorthy, K.V. Mahadevan, G.Ramanathan and many others have created master pieces which are heard even today. Some of the lyrics written by Kannadasan can never be matched. Vaali is yet another lyricist who has penned remarkable songs for the filmdom. Songs such as Adho anda paravai pola vaazha vendum, Enge nimmadhi, Naan Aanai ittal, Thamizhukku amudhenru peyar are endowed with such intrinsic depth and meaning that comparable songs such as these can never be created again by anyone else. Bollywood had stalwarts like Majrooh Sultanpuri and now Javed Khan . Like the atom, these musical creations can never be destroyed from the face of the earth. If at all, they will continue to add beauty, melody, a touch of sobriety and humility in the lives of music lovers . These timeless melodies have made our lives meaningful and added a touch of romance, happiness , love and patriotism in every one of us. Such eternal creations will continue to exist as long as the earth itself.

inema is considered a reflection of the society. But quite often, reality takes inspiration from celluloid. For example, many college students who joined engineering courses discontinued because their college lives were not as exciting as they had watched in the Telugu movie Happy Days. In this article, we spoke to different people and found out what they thought about the various aspects of cinemas influence on the society.

C.D. Mukesh, 59, Businessman: In the movies they try to support culture. The parents are shown trying to teach good things to their kids. However the children do just the opposite. Looking at this behavior in the movies, youngsters imitate this attitude and behavior. In any case, no one cares about culture these days. One good thing about cinema is that they do not show colour discrimination. But in Telugu cinema, the hero is mostly portrayed like a rowdy.

He does not look groomed and spends his time chasing girls. The heroine falls for such boys. Also, hanging out with the wrong crowd is glorified. That is why teenagers and college kids resort to rowdtism, foul language and bad habits because this type of behavior is considered cool. This is because movies these days have no message. Any movie which has a meaning is a flop. Similarly songs have no meaning too. For a while it is fun, but after sometime it gets

generation. The movies are so much influenced by western culture. I accept that westernization has brought modernization and helped us remove several social evils. But today we are forgetting our own culture, our very own identity. Music is getting increasingly violent and sexually explicit. Now a days, every movie is a MASALA movie. It appears that the prime aim of Television and film industry is to pocket huge amounts of money irrespective of the damage caused by their theme, which includes music and dance. Rohith Singh, 17, Mass Communication student: I agree that cinema is leading to cultural degradation. Songs are just for the sake of entertainment. Not every student is a fool to listen to each and every song and do the things which are not meant to be done. They do promote aggression among women as we can see that most of the young women especially in friends circle tend to fight with one another for superficial reasons. The audience wants more entertainment than anything else in their life because they are happy and least bothered about the whole world. So filmas they dont have a mind of their own and try to copy others. Also, things like drinking, smoking, artificially enhancing appearance, meaningless talks etc., are distracting Indians from reaching the Indian Dream. Films or rather the media have a very significant role in moulding the younger

irritating. They are just to fill up the gaps. The music is loud and noisy. Where have the melodious songs gone? There is no originality. Same goes for dance. Apart from Hrithik Roshan, there is no other competent dancer in Indian cinema. Harrison Samson, 21, Bass Guitarist of a gospel rock band: I firmly believe that movies are corrupting Indian youth. There is hardly any educational or informative content. Movies are a powerful medium to propagate ideas and it should be used with responsibility. The themes and story lines are copied from and western lifestyle is showcased as fun. It encourages middle class and poor people to spend out of their means to match the rich. Half the Indian educated youth is actually not educated

behind cultural degradation, but it is a reflection of the deeper problems in our society. Definitely it promotes aggression and violence. Violence against women, gender discrimination, caste discrimination, religious biases, most cinemas reiterate all of these. Sometimes, there comes along a new-age film that tries to show these issues in a different light, but this is more an exception. Cinema portrays entertainment in very objectionable ways. The item song is one such method used to titillate audiences without there being any reason for it to be in the film. What is objectionable is not only the way womens bodies are shown, but probably more important, the way their minds are shown. When it comes to lyrics, there are still songs being made today with a semblance of lyrics, some of them very beautiful. But mostly, the lyrics are run-of-the-mill or downright vulgar (the examples are too numerous to quote here). Music reflects our lives today -- instant, fast and racy. We want something to dance to, rather than something to listen to, in our quieter moments. But then again, there is some (new) music that still holds on the notion of harmony and melody, rather than noise and cacophony. So we may get one gem of a song, in the middle of the garbage heap of noise (as opposed to earlier, when lyricists and music composers would vie with each other to produce good music). But music lovers wait for that one sparkle. Priyanka Sakhamuru

makers have started making movies just for entertainments sake and not to portray social themes. People now use vulgar language in normal conversations because of the lyrics. They are also moving on to music which has no rhythm or which does not create a spark in our lives. The dance sequences are aesthetic in many movies, but it is obvious that the songs are made for the sake of filling up the movie for 2 1/2 hours. P. Sai Anvita, 19, Under Graduate student: I dont think cinema is leading to cultural degradation because they just make a movie for the

sake of entertaining people. It mainly depends on the people, what they think about the movie and how they take it. In some cases cinema/media promotes aggression and violence among women. If they show something bad about a woman in a movie, then there is nothing wrong the women of India should get aggressive. When it comes to the lyrics , by using filthy words in the songs they are misusing the language. This triggers senseless thinking among people. According to me, music is great now because many famous singers are making it great. But the reality is that the audience gives more importance to the music and only then the lyrics. During the early days of cinema, dance choreography was very primitive. Today, it has improved by leaps and bounds. Many types of dance forms are showcased in our cinema. Nandini Rao, 44, social activist: I am not sure that cinema is the real reason

inema over the years has undergone rapid changes. Be it the story line, music, lyrics or the dance. Whatever be the case it continues to enthrall the audience and it is the greatest crowd puller in India. With so many onuses on the cinema, should not cinema be more conscious of what it is doling out to the people? Of late, in the garb of creativity, movies reflect a pathetic sense of taste. Depicting an overdose of violence in every conceivable form, nothing surprises the audience anymore as every form of aggression and violence is shown explicitly. .

Take the case of the proverbial villain in the cinema. Sholays Amjad Khan, Aasai and Gillis Prakash Raj and in recent times Udaans Ronit Roy (the father) were chillingly bad and their cruelty had many layers as opposed to the villains of recent movies whose cruelty is one dimensional and involves cruelty for the sake of it and nothing else. Character skew is glamorized, inciting the yearning for violence among impressionable young minds watching the movies in the theatre or in the idiot box. While villains like Pran and Prem Chopra or even Asokan and Nambiar down south remain in our memories as villains one ought not to follow, todays runof-the-mill aggressor in the movies is forgotten the minute we leave the movie hall. Dev Anand, the evergreen hero who passed away recently has

captured a special place in many a heart, more so for the memorable songs in his picture, which have an everlasting quality. Songs back then were endowed with the richness of meaningful lyrics and melody that touched the hearts. Todays music is transient. Songs like Kolaveri Di will be forgotten the moment the next hit song is released. Uma Subramanian a 50 year old homemaker in Bangalore feels that todays movies are like eating French Fries. Enjoy the moment but it does not have a long lasting effect. Music today lifts your mood and has a foot-tapping quality but the lyrical quality is lacking and is shallow. Negativity is glorified and while good triumphs, it is only after a struggle and the youngsters are given an impression that it is okay to be bad; because they get the moolah. Divya Sriram a young mother from Bangalore feels that movies today keep up to the trend. According to her, music in general is good but it does not have the lasting power of the yesteryears. She also feels that movies that are being churned out are entertaining but do not have social content, barring a few good movies. With particular reference to Why this Kolaveri Di she says she is one of the few who has not listened to the song and hence cannot comment on the same! Arthi Sadanand a mother who is in the thirties feels that movies today are Bold and they have the ability to create revolution or can be taken in a negative manner. She feels the dance and music suit the generation of today, but also feels that they have an expiry date. Though she has listened to the todays rage Why this Kolaveri Di she says that you can listen to it 4-5 times but it lacks the ability to give the goose bumps that the old songs are able to evoke. Krithikha R, a 22 year old young advertising professional feels that the song has a good

beat and will last long enough to serve its purpose. It does not try to be serious and hence allows itself to be seen as a spoof that keeps it interesting. She feels that barring a few movies like Dirty Picture and Paa, most movies do not want to go against the social norms and the role of women is still shown in a derogatory light with item numbers and skin show. In an age where women are aspiring to be treated as equals and with respect, few movies attribute intelligence and success to women on the professional and personal level. While more and more movies will be churned out, what we need is a team of capable directors, original story writers, good lyricists, singers, music directors and intelligent actors who can make a winning combination, like yester year golden era of movies. They should desist from plagiarism and break the quagmire they seem to be in. Chandrika Radhakrishnan from Bangalore

compromising herself to bring up her sons in Mother India. She did not hesitate to gun down her rebel son when he proved to be a menace to society. Then we had the mother who gave away her child due to need, family pressures or circumstances. Annai with Bhanumathi and Sowcar Janaki played the theme like a true soap opera. The meeting of mother and child after many years has been treated with such melodrama in Indian movies that it has become a clich. The Main Tulsi Tere Aangan Ki kind of pictures enshrined the other woman and her offsprings legal rights. Kabhi Kabhi took the story further and presented the viewpoint of the given away child and her mothers new family. In Mani Ratnams, Kannathil Mutham Ittal, or Amuda as it has been dubbed in other languages is centered around the topic of adoption. The child and her emotions are definitely the focus of the theme. The other aspect of the film is the contrast of three mothers: Simran as Indra the adoptive mother, Nandita Das as Shyama the mother who deserts her child for a cause and Kamala as the older sister, the typical mother. All three react to situations in different ways and the film throws up the premise that the modern woman has moved away from the traditional Indian archetype. The treatment by Mani Ratnam of this theme is realistic, barring the perfunctory weepy scene. Nandita leaving the child with the exit line that Madhavan and

he traditional mother in literature and early movies was a stereotype typecast of a woman confined to the four walls of a home, and totally focused on her family. Her world did not extend beyond the village. The minute her role changed to a mother-inlaw, her attitudes and handling of intimate relations changes. However, first daughter-inlaw was trained and prepared to automatically take on the mantle of the matriarch of the family after the older woman passed away. The stepmother was usually a harridan who was out to do in her step children. The image was further painted in bold strokes of women who worked hard, who maintained the traditions and unfailingly performed the rituals and religious festivals of the family to preserve and pass on the cultural heritage.

With urban migration, the roles took on different hues. The archetypal mother was depicted as slaving away at the sewing machine, or cleaning vessels and houses for the rich. A few teachers, typists, clerks or receptionists in an office made their debut, but the flower seller, vegetable vendor etc who worked hard to feed and educate children were more sympathetically accepted. Many of them were single mothers or married to abusive men desperately seeking to protect their children. The automatic choice of actresses like Nirupa Roy, Sulochana, Durga Khote and the next generation of heroines like Waheeda Rehman, Rakhee, Srividya, K.R.Vijaya, Sowcar Janaki, Pandaribai and others established a stereotype MAA. Of course, Nargis became the icon of a mother who goes through hell without

c| 22

December 2011
Simran are now Amudas real parents is the best ending and closure for the childs quest. K3G also deals with the contrast in parental emotions between an adoptive child and a natural child. The theme has been dealt in many other movies too. To mention some memorable films, Masoom talked about acceptance of the husbands child in modern terms. The acceptance comes first from the stepsisters and then Shabana accepts with the box office formula of runaway child, fathers sacrifice etc. AB, Rajnikant, Kamal Haasan and the whole gamut of heroes have enacted the role of the lost child, illegitimate son etc. Films today are showcasing the modern mother as not only a homemaker but also as a wage earner as it is in many homes today. She manages to blend the old and the new, the outside world and the traditional family environment and maintain multiple roles in both her and her husbands family structure. The modern mothers are getting to be glamorous with svelte Moms appearing like Uma Padmanabhan, Radhika, Suhasini. In fact Saranya Ponvannan, with the rural, middle class look and realistic characterization has become the most-sought after mother in Kollywood after winning the national award for the best actress in Tenmerku Paruvakaatru. Women are learning to be different from their mothers. The influences of society have made them change their role from an initial nurturer, to a teacher, a role model and then as a friend to her child. She has learnt to accept and understand the changing standards and life styles of the modern world.

In Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jaayenge, Farida Jalal takes a different route as she does not want the restrictive male dominated decision making to control her daughters life. She goes to the extent of encouraging the lovers to run away with the jewels to support them. This is a major change in the movie script scenario. Hema Malini still manages to bring glamour to the screen while Kajol is being offered author backed roles as a modern mum who knows that she is dying in We are family. Today in India, just as in real life, many screen mothers accept without misgivings inter-caste marriages, live-in relationships, gay relationships, divorce and remarriage. They are also wholeheartedly supportive of adoption, opting to be childless and other personal decisions of their children. Yes, this may be more an urban phenomenon or the viewpoint of an educated middle-class society. The regressive roles of women as harridans, schemers and revenge-driven MILs, SILs and other characters continue to revolve around Tu Tu Main Main sagas on TV. Sickening

episodes of intra social relationships that are totally negative keep audience glued to the TV. The degenerative tales of torture, suffering and ill treatment, murder and mayhem, cheating and destroying relationships haunt the idiot box making you wonder what education has done to Indian women. We have been saying that this is a passing fame for the past twenty years. Women who break glass ceilings are not heroic models for stories. Entrepreneurs shown in TV are dumb women who are easily bamboozled. How they get finances, run organizations, handle workers is shown as a throwback to Mother India days. Women in the performing arts, stories of bureaucrats, professionals like doctors and Principals, professors are all stereotyped and predictable. Even women Directors seem to prefer noire stories. It is more than time to rethink women and their depiction as Mother in cinema and serial. Maybe, down the years, a new generation will bring in this breath of fresh air into Indian lore.

he song Kolaveri Di uploaded on You Tube scored a record 10 million hits and is still going strong. It became a rage, an instant hit. Is there any time tested formula or proven device for instant hits? Rigid marketing planning or rampant promotions? Well, Kolaveri proves otherwise. There is something special about the song, that X factor as extra ordinary things are now referred to; that has appealed to the listeners. Or could it be that peoples interest and curiosity was piqued as this is a song created by a team of debutants. A debutant lyricist, debutant composer, debutant director as well as debutant singer! Is that it? Or could it be a simple it-just-caught-my-fancy kind of thing? This is the debate that is doing the circles in all news channels. That the music channels have been repeatedly playing the song as a chart buster has added fat to the fire. to its credit. But a few seconds into the song, I was ambivalent about continuing- I wondered what so many people found interesting in the song. And finally, as the song drew to its close, I was completely flummoxed at the propensity of the songs likelihood of ripping all the charts to bits with sky-high ratings. In the hope of not coming across as besmirching the talents of the team behind the song, Id like to assert that I have nothing but the deepest respect for the musical styling of the artiste behind the composition and for the artiste rendering the vocals. But the lyrics- the sheer callousness of the biased verbosity professed through music really lost me- with lines that speak of a proclivity for racist bias, substance abuse and a state of general languor- lines that the artiste who wrote the lyrics himself termed as rubbish. It shocked me doubly that the masses lapped up the entire shebang, churned out spoofs and versions overnight. It shocked me even more to find that news channels beamed the song, its making, tte-tte sessions with the artistes, all for a song that doesnt quite seem to send a proper message. NDTV even went to the extent of labeling the song a youth anthem- which is terribly incongruous. Right from setting a bad example to youngsters to virtually distorting linguistic authenticity with the suffusion of random jargon, there is so much to the song that is going unnoticed. The rendition has been placed on the plinth of the sublime, but no one cares enough to see that the soup song sung by an estranged lover is full of racist conflagration. From

f amous actor croons to the beats that are quintessential to Tamil Music, asking a girl why she wields bloodlust. And the whole nation goes ballistic. Not me. I was sure a great bunch of people were like me, until I tuned into News Channels and skimmed through different Print Media. This Kolaveri was viral, splattered everywhere. It relegated the Doon Tragedy to a footnote in a moving news ticker. It jostled for space in print media and threw what would otherwise be a front page news item into the inner vestibules of leading dailies. It blared from speakers in otherwise tranquil environments. It was splashed across social networking sites, became status messages and tweets and re-tweets. It was bloodlust, really. Left to me, I wouldnt have ventured to listen to the song, but when so much is said, written and spoken about anything, it tickles your curiosity. A quick search on You Tube (god bless the website) threw up a tremendous number of search results, sitting atop which was the original video, with an astounding 10,000,000 views and counting,

Romeo-Juliet genre of romance, where the dignity of the relationship was preserved in every nuance of the tale? Entertainment is losing its intellectual acumen. As if it is not disturbing enough that cinema these days endorses the fact men may take to prostitution to tide over a financial crunch, or that a Tamil scientist abroad will eat noodles with curd, or that there is no solution for a paraplegic but Euthanasia, the burgeoning trend of packaging rubbish in the form of entertainment that is very disparaging to the intellect of the audiences. But for its part, the audience is partly to blame- weve suggested a penchant for acceptance of anything- appreciating it and offering the most exalted position for it in our lives. Give us a Sheila ki Jawaani, give us a Munni Badnaam hui or give us a Why this Kolaveri Di, and well revolutionize it with our fan following for eons to come. Why, though? Why is it so easy for us to go nuts with songs that sing paeans of praise for moral depravity or songs that actually make no sense at all? Whatever happened to meaningful mellifluous music? Why are crass movies preferred to quality literature? Why is a blatant display of undignified sexuality through a song-and-dance routine a necessity for any film? Why must every form of expression be stultified by things that assault the sensibilities of the audience? Why are we encouraging our children to follow suit, to take to the remote instead of the inspiring leaves of a well written book? Im sure I do not want to be a part of the greater mass that enjoys every attempt of Cinema to pander to the gallery. If thinking this way makes me an iconoclast, so be it.

he song that is taking the world by storm, Why this kolaveri di? from the Tamil movie 3 has caused quite a frenzy. Roughly translated to mean, Why this rage towards me, girl?, the song was an attempt at a different heartbreak song, says director Aishwarya Dhanush. Apparently, the actor and singer of the song, Dhanush wrote the lyrics in less than

20 minutes. The widespread success of the song has led to much speculation. There are two sides to the Kolaveri argument, as I would like to call it one about the hype that was created, which was not deserving or worthy, and the other about the success of viral marketing, which totally justifies the acclaim the song has received.

The prosecution dismisses Kolaveri as nothing more than a catchy song, which does not deserve all the attention that it has been getting. Says Anusha, a college student, The song is catchy, but there is nothing more to it. The lyrics are ridiculous and it is definitely not worth appearing on the headlines. The success of this song also

draws some attention to what the entertainment industry has become, some worry. From creating motion pictures which imparted social messages, or at the very least, which provided clean forms of entertainment, the Indian cinema industry has evolved to something crude and irreverent as an art form. Granted, cinema is a form of entertainment, but there is no necessity to stoop down to such levels. Entertainment can be provided in other clever and decent ways, with an interesting and a captivating storyline to attract the audience. Usage of Tanglish lyrics subverts the sanctity of the songs, which are meant to be poetic and acoustically satisfying. The naming of Kolaveri as the youth anthem is certainly unacceptable- it neither conveys a message, nor does it portray the youth for what they are, at least most of them, says Rajaraman, 40, a strong-willed member of the prosecution. On the whole, the prosecution doesnt condemn Kolaveri, but just feels that the hype about the song is gratuitous . The defence, an enthusiastic bunch, says that Kolaveri is an awesome song whose widespread success is totally justified. The song is catchy, and its stark nature appeals to audiences worldwide. The song has the whole recipe to

popularity a catchy tune, simple, funny lyrics, an amazing viral marketing technique everything needed to propagate it throughout the world in a matter of days, says Roshan, an employee in an IT company. There is a reason Kolaveri has become so popular. It appeals to audiences of all types because its lyrics are simple and easy to remember, the beats are catchy and makes you feel energetic and alive, say the

defence. Instead of pondering over the cause and effects of the song, people must learn to enjoy it for what it really is- just an enjoyable, mindless song, says Rekha, a tranquil member of the defence. Both the defence and the prosecution seem to have their valid share of points, and hopefully, this endless debate will not make us go, Why this kolaveri di?!, someday. Cheers!

While working at her office, disturbed by the clarion call of a crow perched on the dustcaked window sill, tearing out flesh from a dead garden lizard, Pooja grabbed a paper ball and hurled it at the bird. On her way back home, Pooja walked past a dog drinking water out of a pot-hole on the road, right in front of her apartment. The dog wagged his tail. Instinctively, she scared it away. By and by, as Pooja followed a

similar routine of shooing the creatures around her, when she walked down the alley one day, she noticed that the garbage disposal was overflowing. It smelled foul. The dead lizard adorned her window sill, looking dirty- a carcass tightly bound to concrete. On the way back home, Pooja saw the pothole swarming with mosquitoes and over-flowing with murky water. Imagine dystopia. Even the simplest of creatures acts as a buffer, making a comfortable life possible for us. Recently in a prominent residential township in a metro in India, over twenty dogs were slaughtered. The incident was not only heart-breaking, but far

from defensible. The harsh truth is that we take these creatures for granted to such an extent that we fail to realize how our lives are intricately interwoven with theirs. We are all a part of the same ecosystem. Killing animals or destroying their habitat would mean bringing on destruction to our own kind. Whatever are our motives, the principle remains the same- if we slaughter birds and animals, we obliterate the human race. As most people would see it, humans are superior to animals. Humans are more intelligent and as some would argue, they are more accomplished. If humans are so intelligent, why dont they

leather bags maybe a trend that embodies aristocracy. But for once has it ever crossed their mind that, hypothetically, if it was the other way around, if animals could control us, they could be carrying bags made out of our skin? As Alice Walker once said, Animals can communicate quite well. And they do. And generally speaking, they are ignored. I find explicit truth in the statement. We are oblivious to their pain, to their cries. We dont listen to them. By virtue of being the superior, shouldnt it thus be that it is their right to be protected by us? Isnt it then contradictory that we neither listen to them nor do we perform our duty to preserve them? When we perceive animals as daft, how many times have we stopped to think that though animals are consumers, they are producers as well? Man cannot lay eggs or produce milk for commercial use. Man does not have the strength to pull carts for hours in the scorching heat. But animals can, and they do it without protest. We, on the other hand, can neither do any of what these lovely beings do, nor ever stop complaining. Ingrid Newkirk once said, When it comes to having a central nervous system, and the ability to feel pain, hunger, and thirst, a rat is a pig is a dog is a boy. When a man-animal conflict

December 2011

come up with alternative methods for animal testing in laboratories? If man can invest a colossal amount of his energy in modernizing iPods and television why cant he exercise his brain to replace guinea pigs and rabbits with another alternative for his experiments? Why is it that animals need to fall prey to our quest of probing deeper into the realms of life and death and suffer for our constant greed? Why is it that we are so caught up with technological advancements only for our kind, how about sparing some thought to those furry friends? We can certainly live without an Android, but can we live without birds, trees and animals? The thought seems rather ludicrous doesnt it? Well, perhaps thats what we should think of, at least once, before destroying their race, savagely. We set out to satiate ourselves with whatever ruthless doings we desire only because we can and have the ability to. Polar bears and deer are butchered for their lustrous fur to be made to coats. Saying yes to such products would signify passive support of animal killing. Wearing mink coats and showing off fancy

arises, the priority is mostly given to the man. What follows such logic? When they say that euthanasia is illegal because it is inhumane to take life, on basis is it okay to put dogs to sleep only because they are seriously ill and it is pointless to keep spending bundles of notes on a creature that will, but eventually die? If rats are responsible for life-threatening rodent-borne diseases that cause death to hundreds, political conflicts and wars kill many more. On what basis should rats be eliminated from the society alone? As C.S. Lewis said, If it is logical that we kill animals because they cannot prevent us and because we are backing our own side in the struggle for existence, it is only logical to cut up imbeciles, criminals, enemies, or capitalists for the same reasons. Man must not ostentatiously claim to be humane when he lacks the basic sense of humanity. Animals have roamed the earth for a much longer time than we have, they have equal rights, if not more to live. Destroying their habitat or toying with their existence for our selfindulgence is neither ethical nor justified. They have life as much as we do and one must not forget, we owe our lives to them, the animals. Rittika Chunder Year IV, SRM University (Microbiology)

Play by the Rule!

Want to make a film? You have to necessarily follow a few of these rules or else your movie will be a box office bomber!

Whats the Hurry?

We went to the movie the other night. I sat in an aisle seat as I usually do because it feels a little roomier. Just as the feature was about to start a baby boomer from the center of the row got up and started working her way out. Excuse me, sorry, oops, excuse me, pardon me, gotta hurry, oops, excuse me. By the time she got to me I was trying to look around her and I was a little impatient so I said, Couldnt you have done this a little earlier? No!! she said in a loud whisper, The TURN OFF YOUR CELL PHONE 1. Two brothers separated in childhood will always grow up on different sides of the law. The law-breaker, however, will suddenly turn over a new leaf before the end, bash up the villain (who is the *real* bad guy), and be pardoned for all his sins before the last-scene family reunion. (This is possible only if he has a heroine - see rule 2 below). 2. If the number of heroes is not equal to the number of heroines, the excess heroes/heroines will a) die b) join the Red Cross and

4. Any court scene will have the dialogue Objection milord. If it is said by the hero, or his lawyer, it will be overruled. Else, it will be sustained. 5. The heros sister will usually marry the heros best friend (i.e. the second hero). Else, she will be raped by the villain within the first thirty minutes, and commit suicide. 6. In a chase, the hero will always overtake the villain, even on a bullock-cart, or on foot. 7. When the hero fires at the

villain(s), he will never a) miss b) run out of bullets. When the villain fires at the hero, he will always miss (unless the hero is required to die, as in rule 2).

Twins separated in a crowded mela grow up in separate towns, doing different jobs, marrying and having children, without ever meeting again! Two very close friends fall in love with the same girl and in the touching climax both offer to sacrifice their love for the other and the girl finally declares that shes a lesbian and decides to live-in with a girl shes been seeing secretly! Two young students in the same class in college manage to fall in love with each other without singing any songs in locations in Europe and without any attempt being made to rape the heroine by the local bully. They get married, have nine kids and live happily ever after! The angry young man, whos mother, sister, brother and kids are killed by the big-time goon, decides to take revenge and reports this to the police who nab and punish the criminal!

8. Any fight sequence shall take place in the vicinity of a stack of a) pots b) barrels c) glass bottles, which will be smashed to pieces. 9. Any movie involving lost and found brothers will have a song sung by a) the brothers b) their blind mother (but of course, she has to be blind in order to regain her sight in the climax) c) the family dog/cat. 10. Police inspectors (when not played by the hero) come in two categories: a) Scrupulously honest, probably the heros father killed by the villain before the titles. b) Honest, but always chasing the anti-hero (as in Rule 1), saying, Tum kanoon se bach c) The corrupt inspector, (usually the real villains sidekick) is unceremoniously knocked about by the hero(s) in the climax

Movie Plots with a Difference!

Two friends play cops and robbers as kids, and while one grows up to be a honest and upright cop, the other also grows up to be a honest upright cop! A poor young man falls in love with a beautiful and very rich girl and when they approach the wealthy, arrogant and powerful father he happily gets them married!

Mindset

One fine day, a bus driver went to the bus garage, started his bus, and drove off along the route. No problems for the first few stops - a few people got on, a few got off, and things went generally well. At the next stop, however, a big hulk of a guy got in. Six feet eight, built like a wrestler, arms hanging down to the ground. He glared at the driver and said, Big John doesnt pay! and sat down at the back. Did I mention that the driver was five feet three, thin, and basically meek? Well, he was. Naturally, he didnt argue with Big John, but he wasnt happy about it. The next day the same

By the end of the summer, he had become quite strong; whats more, he felt really good about himself. So on the next Monday, when Big John once again got on the bus and said, Big John doesnt pay! the driver stood up, glared back at the passenger, and screamed, And why not? With a surprised look on his face, Big John replied, Big John has a bus pass. Management Lesson: Be sure there is a problem in the first place before working hard to solve one. As my friend was passing the elephants, he suddenly stopped, confused by the fact that these huge creatures were being held by only a small rope tied to their front leg. No chains, no cages. It was obvious that the elephants could, at anytime, break away from the ropes they were tied to but for some reason, they did not. My friend saw a trainer nearby and asked why these beautiful, magnificent animals just stood there and made no attempt to get away. Well, he said, when they are very young and much smaller we used the same size rope to tie them and, at that age, its enough to hold them. As they grow up, they are conditioned to believe they cannot break away. They believe the rope can still hold them, so they never try to break free. My friend was amazed. These animals could at any time break free from their bonds but because they believed they couldnt, they were stuck right where they were. Like the elephants, how many of us go through life hanging onto a belief that we cannot do something, simply because we failed at it once before? So make an attempt to grow further. Why shouldnt we try it again? Your attempt may fail, but never fail to make an attempt & CHOOSE not to accept the false boundaries and limitations created by the past

Hazards of Judging!

JEST 4 LAUGHS
My husband does. He says he cant communicate with me !

Please. . . he tried again, Is there any infidelity in your marriage? Yes, both my son and daughter have stereo sets. We dont necessarily like the music, but the answer to your question is yes. Maam, does your husband ever beat you up? Yes, she responded, about twice a week he gets up earlier than I do.

Whew!
Kids can sometimes ask the toughest questions. Son: Father, Can I ask you a question? Father: Ok , ask.

A judge was interviewing a woman regarding her pending divorce, and asked, What are the grounds for your divorce? She replied, About four acres and a nice little home in the middle of the property with a stream running by. No, he said, I mean what is the foundation of this case? It is made of concrete, brick and mortar, she responded. I mean, he continued, What are your relations like? I have an aunt and uncle living here in town, and so do my husbands parents. He said, Do you have a real grudge? No, she replied, We have a two-car carport and have never really needed one.

Finally, in frustration, the judge asked, Lady, why do you want a divorce? Oh, I dont want a divorce, she replied. Ive never wanted a divorce.

Son: When a doctor doctors a doctor, does the doctor doing the doctoring doctor as the doctor being doctored wants to be doctored or does the doctor doing the doctoring doctor as he wants to doctor? Father : !!!!!???????

The Pig and the Horse...

Come on! Get up! Get up! Thats it, slowly! Great! Come on, one, two, three... Good, good. Now faster, come on.... Fantastic! Run, run more! Yes! Yay! Yes! You did it, youre a champion!!! All of a sudden, the owner came back, saw the horse running in the field and began shouting: Its a miracle! My horse is cured. This deserves a party. Lets kill the pig! Points for reflection: this often happens in the workplace. Nobody truly knows which employee actually deserves the merit of success, or whos actually contributing the necessary support to make things happen. Learning to Live without Recognition is a Skill! here was a farmer who collected horses; he only needed one more breed to complete his collection. One day, he found out that his neighbor had the particular horse breed he needed. So, he constantly bothered his neighbor until he sold it to him. A month later, the horse became ill and he called the veterinarian, who said: Well, your horse has a virus. He must take this medicine for three days. Ill come back on the 3rd day and if hes not better, were going to have to put him down. Nearby, the pig listened closely to their conversation. The next day, they gave him the medicine and left. The pig approached the horse and said:

Be strong, my friend. Get up or else theyre going to put you to sleep! On the second day, they gave him the medicine and left. The pig came back and said: Come on buddy, get up or else youre going to die! Come on, Ill help you get up. Lets go! One, two, three... On the third day, they came to give him the medicine and the vet said: Unfortunately, were going to have to put him down tomorrow. Otherwise, the virus might spread and infect the other horses. After they left, the pig approached the horse and said: Listen pal, its now or never! Get up, come on! Have courage!

Once I used spoilt milk to make paneer and made koftas with it. While the dish tasted fine, I developed severe stomach upset and infection after eating the dish. Is it harmful to use spoilt milk? Can we convert it to curd and make buttermilk from spoilt milk?
Milk when spoiled should be tasted immediately and better not to try it if it is sour or bitter. Otherwise using spoilt milk is fine when treated with vinegar or citric acid.

Instant noodles are fried and are not often made from whole wheat; hence they do not contain the essential fiber necessary for health to make it an everyday food. Also instant noodles accumulate fat which aids to put on a lot of weight. They can be taken occasionally with a lot of vegetables in the ratio of 1:3. Pasta on the other hand seems a good option.

Looks like you had earlier made a lot of efforts to throw him out of your system; now it seems difficult to reverse it. Did I get you? You did not choose anyone else after he quit the scene. All these days, before you met him recently, what was your attitude towards him?-Negative, neutral or positive? If you say negative, what pushed you to meet him again? I believe that you would have come to a neutral stand over a period of time. As long as you do not hate him, I think it is possible to revive the relationship. He is a known devil(in the proverbial sense, of course!) who is longing for a soothing relationship after a bitter taste. May be you can ask for some time to make your decision. You will be able to find out whether you can revive your feelings for him or not. Relationships are like Bonds. They take time to mature. Unless you are convinced positively, I think you should not go ahead.

Q: I am a 26-year old woman. Five years back, I was in love with a man, who was my neighbour. However, though my parents agreed to our marriage, the boys parents refused and he got married to another woman. I had then decided not to get married at all, because I had already lived with him as his wife in my dreams. After five years, I chanced to meet that man, who wanted to talk to me. I refused initially, but later on met him. He told me that his marriage did not work out and that his wife had left him. According to him, she was

a spendthrift and she used to talk to many men. She felt his quite-ways stifling and left for her parents home. He asked me to marry him. I refused and returned home. My mother felt that if he were serious, his parents should approach us. Now both parties have agreed, but I am not sure that I should marry him. Though I know him quite well and may be what his neighbours told us (about his wife) confirmed his views about his wife, I feel hesitant. I am confused. What decision should I take? Paradise Found in

his is not a regular travel story. The experience was out of the ordinary, so this write-up will be in a manner befitting it. The destination was Sri Lanka and it was a five night trip. When my hubby and I announced our plans to celebrate our first wedding anniversary on this neighbouring island, people scoffed. True it did not sound glamorous enough as Thailand, Singapore or Malaysia do, but we prefer the road less travelled. So we pack our bags and set off from Chennai by air. The journey was short and sweet. Forty five minutes from our take-off we landed at the very lush port of Colombo.

The package:
Since it was a package tour, we were met by our tour guide and driver for the next few days at the airport. From Colombo we headed to the Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage, about 30 km before Kandy. The orphanage was set up to take care of elephants orphaned due to various reasons as well as their offspring. The tuskers and the calves are fed, bathed and taken care off every day. It was an absolute delight to watch them frolicking about in the lake at their bath time. From there we headed to Kandy, a beautiful town surrounded by hills. Here, we were put up at

a hotel located on top of a hill. The view from the windows overlooked the valley below. The next morning we woke up to the clouds caressing the peaks. The dull gray hues were a stark contrast to the lush green surroundings. After a darshan at the Buddhist Tooth Relic Temple, we drove up to Nuwara Eliya. The summer capital of Ceylon during the British rule, it is a 90 minute drive and is located south of Kandy. As our guide negotiated the ghat roads, I observed the terrain. Quaint houses with pretty gardens decorated the hillsides. The days agenda included visiting tea gardens

and a strawberry farm. The air was filled with the scent of raw tea and of the pine woods. After a quick tour of the tea factory, we were taken to a British-style parlour and served hot Ceylon tea in true English splendor. We returned to Kandy in the evening just in time for the cultural program which included the traditional dances of Ceylon, men walking on fire as well as playing of traditional musical instruments. Day three involved a long drive to Beruwala-Bentota. A seaside town located on the south west coast of Ceylon, we checked into a resort situated in a private island. The Indian Ocean was just a few feet away and the shore beckoned me. It is a leisure resort where the guests can enjoy swimming, playing pool or table tennis, laze on the deck chairs by the ocean, get a spa treatment or simply do nothing at all. Cut off from the rest of world with the sound of the waves crashing and miles of nothingness, you feel a sense of peace. And so passed day four in idle lounging and relaxation. On the last day, we drove north to Colombo. We spent our time shopping to our hearts content. I promised myself another visit to the beach, so that evening I kept my tryst and drank in the beauty of the sunset. The sojourn back to India the next day was subdued.

surroundings clean. The roads are spotless and neat. In other words, this land is unspoiled and untouched.

Practical details:
Sri Lanka is for budget tourists. The best way would be to book through reputed travel agencies. November to March is the ideal time to visit the country. Make sure you carry US dollars; it is easier to convert them to Sri Lankan rupees. Zest for Life

I
Who can forget the diehard romantic with a zest for life that was contagious? Dev Anand loved life and savoured every moment of his sojourn in the world. Mein Zindagi ka Saath Nibhata chala gaya... seems to reflect his attitude toward life. Devs long journey of 65 years and his track record of playing the hero in 110 of 114 films he has acted are unbeatable. Dev was the third son of a well-

t is rare and a great honour indeed for Indian tinsel town to have been home to a man with a fierce passion for his profession, who held millions of fans across the world under his charm and charisma. The world may have lost Dev Anand but he lives on for ever, etched in the memories of many film lovers and fans in whose mind he has snared a special place.

to-do advocate. He as born as Dharam Dev Pishorimal Anand on 26 September 1923 in Shakargarh tehsil of Gurdaspur district in Punjab. Schooling at Sacred Heart, Dalhousie followed by graduation in English Literature from Government College, Lahore Dev Anand bloomed into a suave, anglicised young man. He got a break in 1946 in the movie Hum Ek Hain. Since

then he never looked back. Dev Anand gave several sterling performances pairing up with the best heroines in Bollywood. The trio Raj Kapoor, Dilip Kumar and Dev Anand redefined Hindi cinema. It would not be an exaggeration to say that the seeds of global filmdom were sown by Dev Anand who tapped his friends in Hollywood to launch an Indo-US co-production, Guide, that was shot in Hindi and English simultaneously and was released in 1965. Written by R.K.Narayan, who needed a lot of convincing from Dev Anand, his story The Guide was adapted to a movie by the same name and catapulted Dev Anand to global recognition and fame. Who can forget Raju, the guide who encourages Rosy to seek freedom from the confines of a stifling marriage and take up her passion, dancing. Combining style with perfection Dev Anands magnificent performance as an unscrupulous , exploitative man who traverses through the gamut of emotions ranging from love, shame to salvation is one-of-a-kind performance that has gone down in the history of Indian cinema as an unforgettable act. In a career spanning 65 years, he has acted in 110 movies in the lead role, many of which were hits. In the late 1940s, Anand acted in a few lead roles opposite singer-actress Suraiya with whom he later became romantically involved. Both of them gave several hit movies together. Their marriage did not come through because of the religious difference. His film Ziddi with Kamini Kaushal became a run away hit, launching in firmly in Bollywood. Devs Association with Kishore Kumar began with Ziddi and then on, he sang in Kishore Kumars voice. He was also close to Guru Dutt and they did a few films together. When the songs in Ziddi became a hit, Dev started focusing on music, the reason why all his films had music that moved million hearts. Songs like Pukarta chala hoon mein, khoya khoya chaand, tere mere sapne ek rang hai , hai apna dil awara are all songs that evoke youthful memories of another time and era when the audience involvement with the movies and the actors was complete. Dev Anand did a variety of role, infusing his characters with modernity, intelligence and a certain light-hearted playfulness that was exclusive to him. Whether it was a young mans crusade to get his father justice in Kala Pani, or a man who sells movie ticket in the black market in Kala Bazar, or an orphan adopted by a family in Bombai Ka Baboo, Dev never let down his fans. In Asli Naqli he played a homeless man who brings joy to his beloveds tragic life. He chose characters that were well ahead of his times including the one as Raju who is a guide who falls in love with a married woman. His movies like Teen Devian, Tere Ghar Ke Saamne, Jewel Thief, Johnny Mera Naam were all super hits.

Dev Anand turned producer with the launch of Navketan in 1949. Till 2011 35 films were made under its banner. He directed films like Prem Pujari and Hare Rama Hare Krishna; the latter had a bold theme and was a great hit. He introduced heroines like Zeenat Aman and Tina Munim to the film industry. The Government of India honoured him with the Padma Bhushan and Dadasaheb Phalke award for his contribution to Indian cinema. On 3rd December 2011 he breathed his last in a hotel in London at the age of 88. His death came nine months after the release of his last film Charge Sheet. He is survived by his wife Kalpana Kartik, son Suneil Anand and daughter Devina. Dev Anand was an incorrigible romantic at heart who believed in reveling in every facet of life and chasing his dreams till the last. There is no death for such remarkable actors. They continue to live through their movies and the path they have set out for others to follow.

he fading away of older stars in the firmament of the silver screen gives rise to newer ones who shine for their tenure and then in turn fade away. When Madhubala, Meena Kumari, Nutan and others left the limelight, actors like Waheeda Rehman, Sharmila Tagore, Rakhi and Hemamalini took centre screen. Waheeda made a tremendous impact with her soft beauty and infinite grace. Born in Hyderabad, Waheeda entered the movie world with a Telugu film and then moved to Bombay, later she settled down in the garden city and has now relocated to Mumbai.

A trained Bharathanatyam dancer, she has acted with all the top heroes in Hindi films. Her name gives the instant recall of the black and white beauty in Kaagaz Ke Phool and the evergreen song, Waqt ne kiya. The scene shifts to the garden with her singing Bhanwara bada naadaan hai in Sahib Bibi Aur Gulaam. The innocent girl is superimposed by the girl on the hayrick in Guide breaking free with Kaanton se keench ke ye aanchal, thod ke bandhan baje payal. One of the most beautiful romantic songs, Chaudvin ka Chand ho seemed to have been written by the poet with

her picture in front of him. She danced and emoted her way into so many hearts with innumerable pictures. Satyajit Ray cast her in Abhijaan (1962) and then she established her box office success with commercial successes like Bees Saal Baad (1962) and Kohra (1964). Her role as a nurse who falls in love with two of her psychologically unstable patients, one after another and finally losing her own equilibrium in the film Khamoshi was a role of a lifetime. She acted as Amitabhs wife in Kabhi Kabhi who had a secret from the past come to upset her comfortable, placid

and close knit family life. She then essayed many roles as his mother in Mahaan, Trishul in the 70s when she graduated to character roles. She got married in 1974 to her co-star, Kamaljit Singh of Shagun, and settled down in Bangalore. She was away from films but used her talents to create a unique enterprise as an entrepreneur making breakfast cereals, a pioneering effort in Health Food supplements in India at that time. She herself modeled for the carton ad and her figure and beauty sold many packets. She relocated to Mumbai because of her husbands illness; he died in 2000. She came back to films and acted in Om Jai Jagdish and Rang de Basanthi. Apart from National Awards and Filmfare awards, she was honoured by The Bimal Roy Memorial Committee for her outstanding contribution to Indian cinema. Waheeda is bitten by the travel bug and has developed a passion for photography. Her house in Bandra now reflects her serenity that she has acquired with age, experience, loss and reflection. Her daughter Kashvi has trained as a jewellery designer abroad and

son Sohail is now working in a company after his MBA. She regularly visits her farmhouse near Bangalore to get in touch with nature and tranquility. Her favourite films are Guide, Mujhe Jeene Do, Khamoshi, and Teesri Kasam. Her best friend is actress Nanda with whom she enjoys Mumbais street food. Waheeda, at 70+ has lived up to the meaning of her name as the one and only actress who has always been the epitome of grace, charm and charisma.

point in time, it makes sense to strive to emerge from the shackles that hinder us from advancing to this vantage position. We bring to you excerpt from an earlier issue of Eves Times. Jayam Ravi is the suave young man in the southern tinsel town whose name spells success. Despite achieving a lot at a young age, he has a very balanced head on his shoulders. A very diplomatic person, Ravi is a proud follower of our culture and values and makes no bones about letting anybody know of his cultural leanings. He believes that this will keep

very mans life is a fairytale written by Gods fingers, Hans Christian Andersen rightly said. Given the present ambience of global exposure and a plethora of opportunities for advancement in myriad fields, young India is poised for a momentous takeoff at the world level. At this

youngsters in good stead. That, combined with amicable and meaningful interactions, he believes, are the best for anybody to lead a righteous way of life. Interacting with the opposite gender is a taboo only in our country. But I think it is alright to interact with the opposite sex as long as the interactions are friendly and dont extend beyond that. I would ask the youth to keep an open mind. Interactions should be similar to your interactive pattern with your family members, in which case there are no hassles. We are distinct from other countries due to our exclusive values about life. Being free with the opposite gender will not degrade our values. It is good to have exemplary moral, cultural and spiritual values. There is nothing wrong in following our values. If you ask me, I have been brought up by my parents with these values inculcated in me. I cannot change my mind set; Ill go with those values. If people are different, let them be- yet let them ensure that they are happy and healthy; whatever their values. My personal opinion is that if we follow our values, then ailments such as AIDS can be controlled to a large extent. The rampant incidence of AIDS is because of lack of knowledge. Knowledge about AIDS is not happening here as it should. I feel that one way to handle this is to introduce the knowledge at the school level, which is a time and age when you learn a lot. There should be a light subject about all aspects of relationshipsnot just the physical aspect. Illiteracy is another reason for the spread of HIV/AIDS and various other health disorders. We should look at various other means of spreading massive education to different age groups and gender with flexible timings so that everyone may benefit from education. We can look at starting night schools, schools for promoting adult literacy in a big way, schools for women and school drop outs, which are mostly girls because of social constraints. The youth can play a major role in creating massive awareness on HIV/AIDS. The media is very powerful today. The youth can organize programmes in FM channels, which are very

Eves Times
popular and also in TV and print media apart from special programmes in schools and colleges to reach message about HIV/AIDS to the people. Finally, my message to my young friends is, Take life seriously Then life will be easy If you take your life easy Life may become serious I also want to say thisWork while you have to work Your time to party is not far off; Dont look for the easy path But pave your way with care Coz a life well lived will give you Lasting peace, health and happiness. Remember, we are actors and our motive is to entertain you and also give a message. My request is, try to pick out the message appropriate to your age and strive to adopt it in your life. On the occasion of the New Year, let us all take a pledge that we will do everything within our means to fight HIV/AIDS so that we can eliminate it from the face of the earth.

for the development of states of individual excellence and establishes a system of empowering beliefs and presuppositions about what human beings are, what communication is and what the process of change is all about. At another level, NLP is about self-discovery, exploring identity and mission. It also provides a framework for understanding and relating to the spiritual part of human experience that reaches beyond us as individuals to our family, community and global systems. It is not only about competence and excellence alone, it is about wisdom and vision. It is useful in practically every sphere of a persons life as it works on increasing efficiency and encouraging change through conscious awareness. The first Basic skills NLP workshop in Chennai by expert NLP Practitioner, Ms. Aarti C. Rajaratnam was very well received and because of the overwhelming response, she has decided to open registrations for the second batch earlier than planned originally. The next batch is on the 16th, 17th and 18th of December in Chennai. This workshop will cover basics of NLP focusing on skills that heighten our own awareness of our maps of the world while consciously acquiring skills that empower personal change. Since NLP is a constantly evolving process, experiential learning will be used throughout the sessions to internalise, generalize and apply the skills and techniques. For details feel free to call Ms Saashwathi Prabhu at 99406 14700 for more details or you can email her at saaswathi@ gmail.com.

Ne u r o - L i n g u i s t i c Programming (NLP) encompasses the three most influential components involved in producing human experience: neurology, language and programming. The neurological system regulates how our bodies function, language determines how we interface and communicate with other people and our programming determines the kinds of models of the world we create. Neuro-Linguistic Programming describes the fundamental dynamics between mind (neuro) and language (linguistic) and how their interplay affects our body and behaviour (programming). NLP is a simple, skilful,

method for studying what goes on inside a person (subjective experience) the process that people use to build their own unique, distinctive maps or models of the world. It is a practical and dependable method for developing and expanding those maps so that effective communication can become a matter of conscious choice. NLPs objective is to increase the behavioural choices available to us. NLP is a multi-dimensional process that involves the development of behavioural competence and flexibility. It also involves strategic thinking and an understanding of the mental and cognitive processes behind behaviour. It provides tools and skills
