It is a Mobile Elevating Work Platform !!! The MEWP is designed to provide a temporary working place in a

localized area. They are intended to lift men, their tools and equipment to a position where they can work safely, and to be moved easily from position

The machines are fitted with a self-leveling cage system to ensure that the cage remains in the level mode throughout the whole operating range available.

This is achieved by the use of hydraulic cylinders which transfer oil from one cylinder to the other dependent on the main boom angle.

Cage leveled is achieved by use of either mechanical systems, hydraulic systems or combination of both.

These machines have the ability to provi and ovef' solution to access problems which gives them some major advantages over the straight boom type of machine.
Cage rotation may be provided as an option. These machines can be powered by diesel, gas battery or combination of types.

Philippine Societv of Safetv Practitioners Middle East Reqion

These machines provide the user with [fFT ONLY e.g. up and down which means that they1p=ugJ be positioned directly under or.to, the si,..S working area. The safe working load is normally much than the straight or articulating/combination machines, however some scissor lift platforms have the capability of a ROLL OUT DECKwhich extends the working area. The safe working load will normally be reduced due to the extended positioning.

C
611212011

Philippine Societv of Safetv Practitioners Middle East Resion

The platforms are raised by use of either "X" or "2" Sigma types of arms powered by hydraulic These machines have the ability to be the elevated position but great care mu Some scissor lifts are classified as SLAB TYPES and NOT designed to be used outside of buildings where they will be exposed to the effects of wind or on uneven ground conditions. These machines should be marked "lnternal use only"

All types of Mobile Elevating Work Platforms have an OPERATING AREA or ENVELOPE.

SCISSOR LIFT MACHINES - generally this consist of "straight up" for the width of the platform. This may change to extend only if an extending deck is available.

Philippine Societv of Safetv Practitioners Middle East Reqion

ARTICULATING TELESCOPIC and TELESCOPIC BOOMS WITH FOLDING TIP SECTIONS have a much more complex working range.

TRUCK MOUNTED MACHINES - a the range diagram provided to ensure positioning. No part of the machine must approach closer than 15 meters to an overhead line on a steel tower (9 meters on a wooden pole), unless by prior arrangement with the electrical company.

Always use solid timber in good and sound condition close packed. Do not attempt to operate with insufficient packing materials or pad size. Steel plates may also be used together with track way for entry and exit from site. REMEMBER:- lf the base is bad the outlook is even worse.

Philippine Societv of Safetv Practitioners Middle East Reqion

With "A" frame outriggers it is not only the correct weight distribution which is important BUT it is MANDATORY that the MINIMUM OPERATING BASE OF THE OUTRIGGERS IS OBTAINED. Many MEWP's have markers on the outriggers legs to indicate when this is reached,

Working close to buildings/structures may put yourself at risk. It is quite possible that the area around new buildings and in the process of construction, will have backfill, loose ground and many unknown underground faults, eg. pipes cable ducts

On some telescopic boom machines the maximum reach that can be achieved may vary the actual load in the cage. This is achieved by the use of a LOAD MAMANGEMENT SYSTEM which will prohibit functions when rated SWL has been achieved given boom length/radius. The functions which are prohibited are BOOM DOWN & TELESCOPIC OUT: thus only safe movements are permitted eg: BOOM UP & TELESCOPIC lN. Swing is not restricted.

Philippine Societv of Safetv Practitioners Middle East Resion

CAUTION: - With these systems, it is possible if the task requires removal of goods from the structure into the cage that, if the position and weight in the cage is close to the maximum, an overload condition will occur without warning.
