Statistics for Planning 2009
EDUCATION
Education plays very important and pivotal role in the overall development
of a country. It is the input in National and individual development, which
influences the efficiency of other, inputs also and has, in fact no substitute at all.
Education has a multiplier effect on other social sectors like health, employment,
labour force etc. Education is now regarded as a human right and it can help in
the poverty alleviation of the individual and the society.
The Kerala Education Act and Kerala Education Rules come in to force with
effect from I st June 1959. Kerala is the most literate State in India. As per 2001
census the effective literacy rate was 90.92% only 54% women are literate as
compared to 76% men. Female literacy is highest in Kerala (88%) and lowest in
Bihar (33%). The District Primary Educational Programme (DPEP) introduced in the
State during 1994-95 was discontinued and a new Scheme Sarva Siksha Abhiyan
(SSA) has now been started to Universalize elementary Education by community
ownership of the School system.
There are 12644 schools in Kerala. Among these 2790 are high schools,
3037 are UP schools and 6817 are LP schools. Out of this 35.57% schools are in
Government sector, 57.66% in Private Aided Sector and 6.77% in Private Unaided
sector. Besides this, 587 CBSE schools, 100 ICSE Schools, 26 Kendriya Vidyalaya
and 14 Jawahar Navodaya are functioning in the state. Over the years the
enrolment of students has been showing a slight decline. Enrolment of students in
Lower Primary, Upper Primary and High School sections are 37.14%, 31.76% and
31.10% respectively. The number of school Teachers during 2006-07 was 176126,
out of which 31.30% are in Government sector, 60.72% are in Private Aided sector
and 7.68 % are in Unaided sector.
There are at present 1697 Higher Secondary Schools in the state, out of
which 42.96% are in Government sector, 31.17% are in Private Aided sector and
25.87% are in unaided sector. Vocational Higher Secondary Education was
introduced in the state in 1983-84 in 19 Government High Schools. At present
there are 389 VHSS, of which 261 are in Government sector, 128 are in Private
Aided sector.
There are 7 Universities in Kerala out of which 4 Universities namely
Kerala, Mahatma Gandhi, Calicut and Kannur Universities are offering various
courses and are general in nature. Cochin University of Science and Technology,
Sree Sankaracharya University of Sanskrit (1993) and Kerala Agricultural
University (1995) are the other 3 Universities functioning in the state. Arts and
Science Colleges dominate the higher education sector in Kerala. 189 Arts and
Science Colleges are functioning in the state. Out of this, 39 are Government
Colleges and 150 are Aided Colleges.
